Hard to judge Louisville as it appears Miami is pretty bad. The Cane O Line was horrible.

The new QB for the Cards looks like he can turn in to a pretty good one but it's gonna take him a little time. Hurts not having his top receiver, but he still made a few impressive throws. He will be better by the time ND comes calling. The Card defense? Hard to say right now. Miami, with a true freshman QB, and no O line didn't give us much to look at. In the end, I expect Petrino will have his offense working well and have an average defense at best. The Irish game is a long ways off and a lot of football till then. Guess we gonna have to see how each team improves week to week before any predictions on the game can be objectively made.

I agree with this. Miami didn't look good and I'm sure ND and Louisville will both be improved by the time they meet. Hopefully our D will have all the kinks worked out. I just don't expect much of a drop off (if any) with Loiusville losing Strong and Bridgewater.

So I was reading Bill Connolly's CFB Study Hall breakdown of UL v. Syracuse, and following surprised me:

Strange game. Well, I guess any game with two safeties is weird. Still. If Louisville could have actually taken advantage of scoring opportunities, they wouldn't have had to wait until the fourth quarter to pull away. But if Syracuse had been just a little bit better through the air (particularly on passing downs) -- "below average" instead of "train wreck" -- the Orange could have stuck around even longer.

In the end, Louisville proved one specific thing: it's a lot easier to start a freshman quarterback and get away with it when your defense is really good.

So I dug a little deeper, and it looks like UL has a defense this year. S&P+ ranks them 5th nationally (ND's 16th), and FEI currently ranks them 1st (to ND's 7th, though FEI's figures aren't adjusted for SoS until after Week 7.)

Of our remaining opponents, FSU is the only one that F/+ ranks as a more difficult opponent:
ND - 11th
FSU - 12th
UL - 17th
USC - 22nd
ASU - 34th
NW - 45th
Navy - 52nd
UNC - 79th

Guess I need to scout UL a little more seriously. Hadn't considered them a major threat; at least not relative to our other opponents.

I think this weekend will tell you everything you need to know about them. Clemson's offense is taking off now with Watson at QB and their DL is sick and should be able to control the LOS and run game. If this game is close, Lville is for real.

I watched their game against Miami and was impressed with their running back. The defense looked good but I assumed it was b/c Miami's offense was absolutely pathetic. Petrino would love to steal this game, especially if we come in undefeated. He'll have those boys amped up for this game.

They're about to get a rockstar of a WR back too. Can't remember his name, but his 2013 production is off of the charts.

I think they will experience the same thing that TCU, WVU and Utah has. Which is, playing tougher teams week in and week out will prove much more difficult than planned. While I know the ACC is not the Big 12 and Pac 12, it still is a HUGE leap from the old Big East / AAC.

I think they will struggle to win 8 the next few years.
Dude the ( now defunct ) Big East wasn't a run of the mill conference. They had some pretty damn good teams and it was a conference the was eligible for a major Bowl

This is one to watch out for. Louisville is going to be a different team with Parker back.

Dude has been all over the place.. Came to Louisville via Auburn, Arkansas St, Arkansas baptist college and has 2 years of eligibility left.

There is no way in Hell that he still has 2 years of eligibility. He played both '10 and '11, sat out '12 and '13 and played this year. This should be his last year, since injury didn't factor into his lost 2 seasons, he doesn't get a 6th year, especially since his dismissal from Auburn was all on him.

Only watched the second half but wasn't super impressed with Louisville. They gave FSU a game, but if Winston doesn't spot them three picks...
Right now they're in that "dangerous but we certainly should win" category for us, I think.

My only concern with Louisville is that they'll be coming off of a bye for our game. I hate the idea of Petrino having 2 weeks to prepare for us.

Petrino isn't Saban.

Let's not mix apples and oranges.

His two weeks will be spent with some 20-year-old coed from campus motor biking, I'm certain.

Louisville impressed in the half you didn't watch. A lot of us seemed to be pulling for Louisville. Then you started watching the game and it all when to shit. We won't make the playoffs because Louisville won't be highly ranked when we play them because they lost to FSU because you watched the second half. Thanks for screwing the team bro

HAHA. UL absolutely crushed FSU in the first half of that game and because of some dumb luck to end the half (and begin the second), FSU got back in it. UL was up 21-0 before a fumble was recovered by FSU in their endzone for a TD to end the half 21-7. The first play of the second half, Winston threw yet another pick only to have the safety fumble it back to FSU on the same play. It was pretty much all FSU from there. Gotta give them credit. But yea, Louisville straight "Winston'ed (allegedly)" those fools for the half you didn't watch.

So what do you all think happens with Louisville's spot in the rankings?

Out of the top 25 where they will probably be when we play them. They have 3 losses and their defense has been exposed.

Yet they hung with the #2 team in the country. I guarantee you that there aren't 23 other teams that can do that.

If only Louisville had a completely healthy Devante Parker all year.... they'd be a top 10 team when we play them.

A more interesting question, to me at least, would have been if FSU lost. Would they have dropped way down? Or would they have stayed in the top 4 like Ole Miss did?

The excuse was that Ole Miss had beat Bama and their loss was by three on the road to a top 25 team. Situation would have been the same for FSU had they lost, but I'm willing to bet that they wouldn't have been as fortunate as Ole Miss.

Too bad it wasn't an SEC team.

It is interesting though. Shouldn't the number 25 team lose to the number 2 team? Why should they drop out for that? But I am certain they will fall out of the top twenty five.
