I am going to mentally prepare for the Virginia game in expectation of the team backing off a bit. Playing to Virginias level. The first half or so will be frustrating.

That wouldn’t surprise me but it also wouldn’t surprise me if we take them to the woodshed.

It would be very convincing if we destroyed them

I mean they were literally down 17-0 at home against old dominion yesterday. If we don’t bring it to them then I’m loss for words

ND's ranked #10
UVA's ranked #18

UVA beat PITT by 14. PITT just upset UCF and lost the week before to #12 PSU by only 7. Yes, ODU scored the first 17 points before UVA scored the last 28.

ND is ripe for an adrenalin letdown after the battle with Georgia. UVA is obviously not Georgia but they are ranked only 8 slots lower than ND.

I'm curious just how far down does ND have to back off to play to "Virginia's level"?

UVA is a very good team and stylistically they have the kind of QB to give ND fits. I think this is the hardest game left on the schedule. The main reason that UVA stunk it up to start against ODU is because 1) it's ODU's super bowl 2) they were playing intentionally vanilla and unintentionally without energy ahead of the game at Notre Dame.

UVA is coming to win this game, and I hope ND plays with a purpose like how they did against Georgia. The offense needs to produce, the ND defense will inevitably give up some points to UVA.

Bingo! This game will tell us a ton about what the ND team’s outlook is.

Need to make a statement with this game. Show that you're on a different level from the merely "good" teams like in 2017 vs NC State. Beat down UVA

After we put the beat down on Virginia the narrative will change and it will be because they actually weren't any good. OD almost beat them too.

I could see this game going like Syracuse or Fla St. last year. They are comparable ACC teams and both times last year we stepped up left no doubt as to who was the better team.

Did I hear correctly in BK's presser that Lenzy got banged up during practice and didn't make the trip? Hopefully he's ready to roll this week.

Heard he stayed back bc of concussion protocols

Yeah Lenzy went into concussion protocol at the end of last week. Kelly said with his speed he was going to be a big part of the game plan on running plays and deep routes. Just another weapon the offense lost to injury....welp

I'll be there, tons of family coming into town. It will be nice to be back on campus, great medicine following the let down Saturday.

In an odd way, I'd be more worried about this game if we won Saturday night. But, with the tough loss I think the boys will be ready and motivated to right this ship with a quality W and get the season back on track.

Having Young and Smith back is huge. But I still want to see more Kyren. RB by committee Saturday with Young back on the outside with a platoon of Finke/Keys in the slot gives us enough weapons to be lethal, especially considering the attention Kmet will garner after he turned some heads and a lock down CB on Claypool.

Still think Claypool makes plays regardless. He's too good to not make some noise over 60 minutes.

He was suspended due to toes injury

From the Georgia game day thread:

From Greg Flammang at UHND
The trajectory of the Smith injury as I recall is he was day to day, then held out as a precaution, to being doubtful Thursday of game week. I may be missing context, but I think there is reason to think Smith is out next week too and maybe more.

To me that reads as tho Flammang believes it's not injury related but I could be wrong.

The Irish are much better than Virginia. The rallying cry for the Irish is to not let Ga beat you twice. Put the Cav's away early and eliminate all doubt.

Better buckle up for another super bowl game for the opponent-I'm a little scared of this one is any one injured from the Ga game

Others could answer the injury updates better than me. I do think Virginia is better than they have played and expect them to come out fired up. But I just don't think they have enough to hang with ND... especially if the Irish stay focused this week. Kelly and his staff need to work hard this week to ensure that happens. This has the makings of a tough game after a loss so the Irish need to come out firing on all cylinders and take no prisoners. I expect they will do just that.

Tommy, how has your perception of both ND's team and Georgia's team this year changed after watching the game?

Interested to hear an SEC'ers thoughts.

I think both will continue to get better as the season progresses. So long as the injury bug doesn't hit either one even more. I don't think Ga is quite there yet as an "elite" team and Kirby still isn't a great in-game coach IMO. I was more impressed with what the Irish did in the game... given the supposed talent gap and the fact that the game was away. I did think Ga would pull away midway through the third, but the Irish resiliency was way more impressive than anything Ga did.

BK said multiple times that this was the most physical game that he’s been a part of in his career. That leads me to believe that this will be a tough recovery week for all involved. ND is the better team but Mendenhall always has a stout defense & he’s going dare ND to run so they better be able to. We’ve seen it read many times that Perkins is the type of QB that drives ND & their fans crazy.

Rewatching the game, I think fans will realize that Long’s play calling wasn’t as bad as the execution by the players w/ missed blocks & false starts at key moments.

Hopefully, you’re right & these kids are pissed and take it out on UVA. To your point, they cannot afford to let UGA beat them twice.

Virginia hasn't looked very good in the two games I watched of theirs. I think and hope ND crushes them

ND played with heart against Georgia but played far from a great and in some areas good game. Book should play better, the OL should run block better, TJJr shouldn't fall from a one handed ankle grab 2 yards for the first down line and our D while looking very fast was still allowing Swift to break too many tackles. Claypool, Young and Keys need to start and definitely try out some other RBs......any one of them!

Book needs to run more often.

For once in my life, I believe that there won't be any hangover at all. Virginia is good enough to make some plays, but I believe that Georgia proved to OUR OWN guys how good they can be. We gonna be beast. They will Release The Kraken.

I don't think you want to be next playing the loser in a game like that. Rather play the winner.

Kelly said the captains called a meeting today. They have this under control.
