So Witcher is amazing... I like it better than Elder Scrolls... question, I'm not big into potions and such... whenever I've delved into them I always feel like it was needless... what am I missing.

You have to put 8 points into the first tier of the Alchemy tree (3 points into Acquired Tolerance 5 points into and Heightened Tolerance) to raise your max toxicity high enough to run multiple decoctions at once. Then you keep Ekimmara, Ekhidna, and Water Hag up at all times. Huge boost to damage and survivability. Add on the Euphoria mutation from Blood and Wine and enemies simply explode upon first contact.

After that, Tawny Owl is the most useful combat potion. Thunderbolt and Maribor Forest are good for topping off damage if you've got the spare toxicity (but I usually don't). Use utility potions like Cat or Killer Whale as needed.

side- I play on various difficulties but usually roll on Story and Swords... I've kicked it up and down at various times.

The proper difficulty really depends on how much you've optimized your build and gear. I did Blood and Broken Bones on my first playthrough, and am currently on Death March for New Game +.

The Show is still super beastly too...

I'm sitting here, career, wife, kids, household, friends and I'm like... there are just simply too many great games to play for all this other shit to be going on....

In love with The Show, really glad I decided to grab it this year.

Somebody messed up and put Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens Deluxe Edition on Amazon for $2.99 instead of $29.99.

Sure do. The Nintendo is as finicky as we all remember but it works.

Get a Q-Tip and rubbing alcohol. Clean both sides of each cart's connector, it will do wonders. Just make sure not to turn the game upside down so the liquid gets inside. Dry the connector when you're done.

You also need to clean your 72 pin connector, and if that doesn't help then I'd suggest ordering a new, high quality gold connector...not that cheap crap out of China. Those come with defective/bent pins that don't make contact.

Blowing the dust out of a NES system and games is a true art form.

Blowing dust out of the carts does next to nothing honestly. Removing them and reinserting the game actually does more to clean the surface than blowing. You don't want to get moisture from your breath inside the cart.

We used to put them in the freezer during our sessions. We'd pop one in, and if it worked, the others would go in the freezer until we were ready to switch games.

We thought it was the miracle worker, but as it turns out, it was probably just preventing additional dust from collecting in the cartridge.

Idk if anybody around here is big on Madden anymore, but it appears that they're revamping the individual career mode to be more like "Road to the Show" or NBA2K's "MyCareer." It looks like it's going to be more of a narrative, rather than just controlling an individual player and grinding attributes and whatnot.

I made the decision last year that I wouldn't buy Madden anymore since it is literally just a roster update at this point with graphics where they are, but a radical change in a story-like mode that holds value for a while might change my mind. Depends on the reviews and the depth of the new game mode, I guess.

The Show is a great example of how something like a career mode can go right, while NBA 2k is a great example of how to screw it up.

2k's narratives are so cringe and so uninteresting, and they've essentially just made the entire thing a huge grind. Not to mention the hard skill caps make it so that I literally cannot, not even if I put 100 hours into the game, make my player as good as Harden, Curry, Durant, James, etc.

So far The Show is not cringe, but has a narrative and makes you feel your career accomplishments. It also streamlines the game and allows you to upgrade whatever you want.

NBA 2k is a real shame because career mode was my favorite game mode in all of sports games and they just ruined it.

I picked up Crusader Kings 2. I'm not good at it

That game is brutal until you figure out what you're doing. If you're a fan, get the ASoIaF mod. I'm much more familiar with the houses of Westeros than I am with an incredibly small and obscure medieval family in Italy. It made the game much more digestible until I got good enough to play with the original game.

Oh I'm definitely gonna try that mod and a few others, but right now I'm just trying to get a feel for the game. I started in Ireland as a count and acquired 3 more counties pretty quickly, but then I stalled. I thought I was doing alright until I realized that I hadn't actually consolidated my counties the right way. Stupid gavelkind then split them up to a bunch of low energy losers in my bloodline. I thought I had more time as my starting character was just in his upper 50s, but he died and the next guy in line was a complete waste of air, which is why his son killed him. The skills went from about 5 across the board to 9, though I have a 23 year old with teens all the way across the board and like 17 for steward level. Basically at this point I'm just trying to fix my mistakes and murdering family members to cull the factions that are rising.

Are you sure? I know in the 2016 game they give you a fixed number of points you can work with to start, but you can earn additional points after you hit the cap by doing practice sessions. It's long and tedious (I never ended up maxing my guy out completely, just got through the original cap and earned a few extra), but you can get to 99 overall. You can't max every attribute, but in reality that would be rather unrealistic anyway.

The hard part for me is unlocking the other stuff, like the badges. Some of those can be rough. In that respect it may be pretty damn difficult to get better than a LeBron because he has most of the badges.

As far as the narratives and storylines, I have to agree. The one last year with Spike Lee was frickin' awful. I haven't played this year's yet and I probably won't.

Not really. They're pretty much the same price, but the gray is far more common since it came with the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt Action Set.
Only the early ones. My dad's came in the same bundle. They changed from gray to orange because they decided the gray one looked too much like a real gun.

Maybe that's what he's saying...poors couldn't have the NES when it was first released with the gray gun. They had to wait to save

It's long and tedious (I never ended up maxing my guy out completely, just got through the original cap and earned a few extra), but you can get to 99 overall.

This year on top of the fixed number of points they also put a hard cap on skills which are dependent on what type of "specialty" you decided to have at the beginning. You can still earn more points through practice but you cannot adjust the cap.

So for example, if you're a three point specialist, you can have a maximum of (I think) 95 on 3 point shooting. You have to pick that "specialty" in order to reach that number, none of the other choices allow you to get that high. Unfortunately, that specialty also has a skill cap on layups/dunks that is in the high 70s and a defensive skill cap that is in the low 80s. So it's absolutely impossible to create a Steph Curry who is both a terrifying 3 point shooter AND an excellent driver. It's also impossible to be a world class rebounder and a top tier offensive player. It's an incredibly restrictive system.

You can't max every attribute, but in reality that would be rather unrealistic anyway.

I don't personally play this way, because I agree it would be broken, but this attitude is a pet peeve of mine. If I'm playing an offline mycareer then I should be allowed to build him however I want. 2k is essentially setting up restrictive rules and is telling its players how to not engage in what is (lets be honest) a fantasy.
