After reading various comments sections involving tOSU fans, I can say I wish the worst on the whole program. I'd like to believe that if ND won the national championship we'd be very excited but also adamant that it's tough every year to win. You'd think they hadn't lost in a game in a decade.

As to Cardale Jones' comment:

Any one of our QBs has to play more school than their 3 combined so....yeah. I hope Urban gets caught in the dirty.

I was actually surprised with the comments. Those were pretty civil for an OSU board.

Thing is, he was a four star by everyone right? I understand they aren't always correct but if a high four star can blow their minds to the degree it sounds Jerry has this spring, what could be if ND would just give a few waivers a year like they did with Holtz and bring in some high fives here and there on the D Line....

Yes I understand JT may just be a huge gem even for a four, but that doesn't help my AL Davis agenda.... Just Win Baby.

My understanding is that Kelly is getting a few academic exceptions a year. He is getting more than any coach since Holtz. Thus the reason Daniels was admitted, which turned out to be a problem. I believe Weis had a total of zero exceptions a year.

We do that now. Daniels and Neal were both exception players just off of the top of my head.

You're right, I just didn't think of anyone that notable, since I havent been following recruiting as closely in the past.

And Tee, until he couldn't even clear NCAA and had to leave.

Notice a trend though? all of those guys didnt make it to graduation day... not going to help bk try to bring more of those types in

I do think its funny how everyone is saying they wish we had more of these guys, and then we list off all the kids that have been headaches for the team/staff/fans.

These are great points. Give me more Tillery's and Jaylon Smith's. This roster we have now is the closest thing we have had to a Holtz type roster, since well, Holtz. It's gonna be better when we finally take the ship because it will have been done right by kids that truly get it.

I agree with what you guys are saying but you have to take a couple knuckleheads and loose screws once in a while. It's not like all 85 of our players are angels and staff doesn't sit up wondering what they are doing. Every program in the country has them, I think BK is learning how to deal with them even though they haven't made it at ND. it's not like BK or the players didn't try too make it work.

That's been my impression as well.

I'm sure there are success stories that we don't hear about (because, really, unless he loses eligibility over it, what business is it of ours how a kid does in school?). And some of the headaches haven't been academic problems (here's looking at you, Gunner).

But I also think the staff has learned that - between academics, distance, competition and cultural fit - there are only so many things you can reach on. You don't see us going after so many Lynches and Shepards these days: Highly-rated, from far away and an academic background that might not have prepared them for Notre Dame. Maybe a few recruits fall in that camp, but not as many as we took in the early Kelly years. And more of those who might seem like a reach in some ways - like Tillery - are really bright young men who want to be at Notre Dame.

It's true: That approach hasn't landed us a Top 25 recruit since Jaylon Smith, and we might lack the on-field athleticism of the most elite teams that get those kids. But we've drawn a lot of really quality ballplayers, and built more good depth than we've had in a long time, without having to backfill lots of transfers and washouts. Not so bad. And, with good coaching, I think we can win that way.

We've had considerably better classes since we stopped doing that. Remember Aaron Lynch, Davonte Neal, Davaris Daniels, Tee Shepard to name a few. Those were all such solid investments...

Hell, it's that sole reason why the 2012 class was such a catastrophic mess.

You make it sounds like kids like this are A) a dime a dozen and B) ND is consciously passing them up. The reality is we are going after the JS and JT types. We're just not landing them all.

It does pain me to think about what a huge class that could have been, though.

Imagine if Lynch stays and develops; if Kiel gets comfortable at ND and takes over in 2013 when Golson gets suspended; if Darby keeps his head on straight and sticks with his initial pledge; if Tee would have had better guidance and got cleared by the NCAA; if Neal didn't have his issues and was able to stay and develop.

It's actually impressive to look back and see the talent that Kelly was able to target and initially bring in. It was a beautiful blueprint to build a powerhouse around. BK knew what he was doing....... IF the guys all bought in and stayed engaged. It's tough to keep a bunch of kids on the same path at all times, though.

Not being facetious here, but how do you guys know who the academic exception players are?

Is this documented somewhere, or speculative?

Not to be a dick, but I think some of you are talking on assumption vs reality when it comes to these "exceptions". I can't and won't elaborate on this area because I feel that's unfair to the kids on the roster.

Notre Dame is doing just fine as far as recruiting goes. Lack of talent or "execeptions" isn't holding the program back. Notre Dame needs to take the next step in developing a two-deep and having quality depth so that the drop off isn't so large. I think BK made some good hires this offseason to help improve that area and he got "teachers" on the staff.

i think taking "exceptions" is really a risk a coach will take when he is under severe pressure. I remember when Rich Rod first took the UM job he felt like he could not compete with the talent he had so he petitioned the UM board to allow him take 7 such "exception" recruits instead of their usual 1 or 2. In the end none of them worked out and some didn't even make it to campus. At this stage in his tenure i don't think BK needs such recruits to roll the dice with.
