He does understand this.

He mentioned that in the presser that they have ran two QBs well (assuming, 2012). He also said 2016 was a mess because the two QBs were "too similar". That's the big thing imo. If you're going to play two of them, they better play off each other well... This is more Everett/Tommy than Deshone/Malik. (On paper, it's better than 2012, because I believe each QB is better this year, and Brandon is a way better rusher)

Yep, he actually went into a fair amount of detail, which is why I don't think it was for show. I think he was genuinely explaining the thought process.

*Meaning he turns the ball over and loses the game when he plays a defense with a pulse.

(For the record, I know he’s capable of being an elite QB. Maybe playing in Harbaugh’s offense will solve his turnover issues. But for now, I’d take Wimbush because he’s shown he can use his best traits to beat good teams. Patterson’s best traits haven’t shown up in a win over a good team yet.)

This plus, their Oline was not good last year, and while they have a lot of guys back on it, that doesn't mean they will all the sudden become great now.

I watched the first 2 halves of these games. In that, he showed he's in charge, not rattled, and has field awareness that I'd take every single year for the rest of time if I were an Irish fan.

Defining "it" is different for everyone. But I saw a guy who has confidence, knows he's in charge, and I'd believe in as a teammate.

I didn't see all 10 interceptions. But the ones I did, he bounces back from on the next play. He doesn't get shook.
There's no deer in the headlights for him. He kills the deer.

What's his record against good teams? If he had "it" that record would be good.

Your "The Good" assessment makes Patterson out to be a top 10 pick in the draft. Not saying he can't be at some point but he isn't there yet. He has shown the potential to be really good. But he has also shown the potential to be really bad.

It all starts with pressure. And that's where Patterson is the weakest. Enough pressure and maintaining your gaps and Patterson becomes average. And he doesn't have AJ Brown to throw to at Michigan. I do think Taric Black can be good at WR but he isn't Brown just yet. I want to see just how aggressive Lea will be on defense.

This is really the issue with him - he's inconsistent.

He's an athlete with a strong arm so he can make some plays and make some throws. His footwork is an absolute disgrace and he routinely makes throws off his back foot unnecessarily.

His short range accuracy is good but it could be great if he just set his feet and stepped into his throws, rather than drifting backwards which he does often even with a clean pocket. I disagree with Koon that he leads receivers well. He can at times but again it's inconsistent. He throws a decent ball down the seam but his deep ball on the sidelines is below average. He generates all his throwing power through his arm rather than his legs and hips which makes it difficult to consistently throw an accurate long or mid range pass.

He has a tendency to lock in on one receiver, especially on short routes, and will throw it into coverage. ND should get a couple shots to pick him off.

He's elusive in the pocket and has some wheels. You have to keep him contained with pressure from all sides or he will buy time for his receivers and burn you. He's careless with the ball, especially when he's dancing around the pocket. He's going to give the defensive line chances to swipe the football away from him.

If he's on, he's the type of player that could be a difference maker. If he's off, he'll turn the ball over and hopefully give ND's offense a couple short fields to work with and will help put points on the board against a defense that may be stingy.

So I'm feeling kind of good?

I thought you were all doom and gloom, but then I looked at your season prediction and saw that you voted for 10-3. I think you're heading into Crazy Balki territory, with that attitude!

Kelly's defenses in the past have made mediocre quarterbacks look like All-Americans. Hopefully, that was corrected last season and the defense will be even better this season.

Personally, I don't see us scoring a lot of points against Michigan's defense. If that is the case, we can't afford to make Patterson look like an All-American. We need the same type of defensive performance that forced USC's Darnold into turnovers last year.

And Wimbush has to avoid turnovers that give Michigan field position advantage. The key could be our kicking game. Can we punt well enough to force UM to make long drives, and can we make field goals when we need them. This looks like one of those games that could be decided by the kickers.

Could be, but I think BK was explaining that a healthy QB rotation is certainly on the table. It's worked before (2012) and it failed miserably (2016). Seemingly, you'd think he'd understand where it went right and wrong. At this point, I will not be surprised if we see a similar scenario where Wimbush will be consistently rolled out and Book will be called upon if needed.

Granted, a perfect world, Wimbush just runs with this thing from the first snap. But I'm starting to think that presser was about preparing people for the above. And I get it. It's incredibly hard to permanently bench a player like Wimbush that can absolutely change games by himself.

Here's the thing though. I think we're getting a QB rotation mixed up with a QB contingency.

2016 was a full blown QB rotation. Kelly didn't name a starter and planned on playing both Zaire and Kizer going into the season.

2012 was a QB contingency. Golson was the starter and would remain so unless his play deteriorated to the point that they needed a change. Rees provided that contingency.

To me, this definitely seems more like a QB contingency. Wimbush is the starter, and I fully expect it to remain that way unless disaster were to strike. If that were, Book is the contingency plan. Kelly seems to be giving both the props they deserve. I do think both have made improvements over the offseason. How much so remains to be seen, but I'm hoping the competition has brought out the best in them. I remain cautiously optimistic.

Exactly. Book is a good relief pitcher (though in this analogy, the starter can return to the game). He's going to come in when needed, and Kelly is confident he can get key outs. But Wimbush is the staff ace. Very different than the 2016 situation.

Here's the good news. You also believed Malik was the greatest leader and had "it". You also believed NC State was going dominate upfront.

But you also believed Longo was failing us. Your mental mode is the same every year. You hype up the other teams and believe we'll lose and then when we win, you still get to celebrate. If we lose, you get to tell every one how unbiased you were and that you saw it coming.

Win-win for Koon. I don't blame you, it's hard being an ND fan. Hopefully ND football make a giant leap this year.

So...Brian Kelly presser scheduled somewhere around 4:00-6:00pm. Looking forward to hear about health of the team, how excited he is to play, etc.

There is one difference this year that I feel in the undertones of all the pre-season stuff.

Usually it seems ND goes out of their way to project an air of confidence. This season has felt pretty low key despite a large number of returning starters. I don't really know what to make of it but I hope it's because there's a lot of confidence in the locker room so they don't feel the need to project it.

Agreed. Kelly's been very reserved compared to previous seasons. Nobody knows what they have right now and I'm guessing the coaches feel the same.

They've been around their team but they don't know how they'll respond under the lights or who is prepared to take the monster leap into stardom.

I feel as if we will be pleasantly surprised or we're gonna be pissed and realize they're not even close to ready for the big stage. For some reason I don't see any feelings in between. We're gonna love them or hate them. We'll see....

I don't like fall practice but I do like when a coach is more reserved while going through it. I think in year's past Kelly has used his public comments as a way to motivate and raise expectations. This year I think he has a nut flush draw and wants to play things closer to the vest. I think Kelly is ready to throw his chips in and get a really good season underway.

I think they know exactly what they have. A very solid team that from top to bottom that is sound and has depth. Someone goes down there's a capable player to play "next man in". Their focus has been improving upon the base that was established last year.

"Dressed, on the sidelines, and we'll see what happens when we kick off."

From the presser.

What a total troll job this would be if Dex comes out and takes the first hand off of the game. A Harbaugh-esque move.

I agree with this. I feel like we have a different Kelly this year. Which is why I hope they come out in the Green Uni's. Roll the dice, jack the team/crowd up, get embarrassed for doing so if they lose. It's worth it, IMO.

I guess I just get tired of all the fluff articles being written, coaches doing their coach speak, preseason predictions, etc. Makes 30 days seem like 30 months. I say tee it up and let’s just get it on and get it settled.
