I wonder if he bothers to put on a clean shirt for radio interviews?

I said it this spring, but we needed to take Butler (ironic), and White (also ironic) and move them to FS. We also probably should've put Brent there as soon as he got in the doghouse, but apparently coaches didn't think he projected well on the defensive side of the ball or something. I at least understand the logic of Brent being move to RB and possibly being effective as a 3rd down back... but safety has been paper thin for YEARS now and we've done absolutely nothing to fix it.

Initially associated "Fats McSunglasses" with Mike Francesa, NY Radio personality. Made me laugh..

I think you said that about Butler last spring too. And wasn't Brent moved after Bryant transferred?

Any chance bvg simplifies the playbook with our lack of depth in the secondary coupled with extreme inexperience at the safety position?

Nope. He'll just blitz like fkn crazy and expose everything as quickly as possible, especially on the road in prime time.

I get why the first thought is to put Brent at the FS position but that seems like a bad move to me. If we've learned something from the Redfield debacle its that football IQ > athleticism for safeties in this defense.

To put another way: Redfield was a five star athlete with bad football IQ and was a borderline disaster at safety last year. Brent is a four star athlete with a bad football IQ, a reportedly underwhelming work ethic, and no experience on the defensive side of the ball. Seems like there is zero chance at him actually becoming a meaningful contributor at the position, so why move him?

Because he's the 5th RB and the safeties we have have never played in a CFB game, so what's there to lose? There's no risk in taking him from RB, he's literally never going to take a meaningful snap. Maybe he can't play safety well but at least he's a body there if we're desperate, which we'll be more than desperate when the first injury happens.

I'd totally agree if this was DE or DT. My point is that I think it's very very unlikely, injury or no, that he's ever going to take a meaningful snap at safety either. He's a guy who couldn't learn the WR playbook. If you can't mentally handle checkers the answer is not to play chess.

He has another year after this one correct? I'd say it's more likely that he sees a meaningful snap as a third string RB next year than as a body at safety. Except for his build, nothing about a move to safety makes sense for this kid.

Does the Max/Coney/White issue impact the QB race at all?

1) I think this team needs a go-to leader at the QB helm to help give this team an identity and leader to follow (everyone disagrees, I get it - spare us).

2) With the defense having serious issues at Safety now, do we adjust our offense at all to increase ball control/limit the defense being on the field? If so, does that help Malik's case?

1.) No.

2.) I think BK and staff is wanting to go towards a time controlled offense this year anyway so yeah.

Based on what? That's news to me.

It is just my opinion but there are a few things that kind of back up my opinion.

1.) The lack of experience and past production of receivers.
2.) We have some mean SOBs on the o-line.
3.) We have 3 good running backs that can take over the second half of games.
4.) We have 2 quarterbacks that are good with their legs and I think BK will want to use them in the run game.

I agree with every point. I'm hoping they're thinking along the lines of you/I, but they haven't suggested that so that's why I asked.

Well this is really the first season (2013 as well) we don't really know how good our receivers will be. We know they CAN be good, but will they be? In past season, BK has always had a receiver that he can really rely on and he probably knew he can just let his quarterback rip it. I have no doubt that Torii Hunter can be "the guy" and other guys can be major contributors but, like everything else, we have to wait until September 4th to see if that will be true.

interesting to hear power hour bring up moving Luke to Safety is Studstill were to go down. Luke knows the entire defense and we got better depth at corner.

geesh, that would be a huge move. not a fan of it.
love Luke at his corner, damn near lock down at this point....why mess with that?

safety and corner are two TOTALLY different positions.

who at power hour said they are considering move Luke to safety (just curious)?

He's an NFL corner, at least for a few years. Don't like the move at all, probably not good for the defense, and definitely not good for Luke's draft potential.

It sucks but do you guys have a better immediate solution? In a situation like this, his draft stock goes out the window. Cole and the staff have to worry about right now and worry about the NFL in January. If it comes to that point, moving Luke would probably be the best option for the team because other guys just simply won't be ready. With the emergence of Coleman, White, and the freshmen the staff might be able to afford moving Luke to save the secondary.

I get your point but I don't even think it's good for the 2016 football team.

Look guys, I just adamantly disagreed with Mike Frank. Make sure you don't take notice as it won't fit your narrative ;).

Why not? This is his third year in the system. The caoches have said that Luke even knows what the linebackers are supposed to do on every play now. If he knows that, he probably knows what the FS is supposed to do too.

I don't think it would negatively effect his draft stock either. Quite the opposite actually. NFL teams are going to draft him as a corner, but they love guys who have cross trained at safety. It would make him a much more well rounded player in the long term. It would be one season where he plays safety and then back to corner. He's a versatile athlete, he could handle it. I think it would make more sense then having guys that are detrimental to our team back there while a good corner sits on the bench.

I took it as only an idea if Studstill went down and Elliott doesn't get up to speed.

Hopefully with all the increase in reps and coaches focus on getting Elliott ready we will be fine.
