"As for hopes for reinforcements from the suspended ranks, the ongoing academic fraud investigation process advances into its 49th day Monday with no timetable for a resolution and this surprising detail from ND head coach Brian Kelly on Sunday.

None of the five players has gone through the hearing process before an honesty committee as of Friday. The committees will ultimately determine the players’ fates, though there is an appeals process open to all, with a seven-day window to exercise it."

Nothing ground breaking from NDInsider but note worthy.

For some reason this made me think of the Iranian Crisis back in '79 when Iran held US Citizens captive. For those of you to young to remember, that's actually how "Nightline" got started and Ted Koppel got his recognition. Every night after the 11:00 local news Ted would come on ABC for 15 minutes and give a daily recap of the situation. A lot of nights there wasn't any real news, but he would have guests on that would provide thoughts and speculation as to what was happening behind the scenes and what might happen next.

It reminds me of Panda Watch, because it's stupid and there's nothing to be done by any of us.

All we can do is stay away, because they are live bears and they will literally rip our faces off.

Except that was a movie and a comedy at that.

This is real life altering events that have wreaked havoc across the world. It will take decades for the wounds to heal. Just ask Koonja.

Oh, I was just giving you a hard time for not embedding the tweet. I actually really like that Fortuna piece and basically agree with him.

I do NOT want any special consideration given to these kids, with respect to the nuts and bolts of the process, just because they are football players. Those types of concessions only undermine the integrity of the proceedings. ND should be following its normal process.

But that does NOT mean that the honesty committee should not be handling this with alacrity. These kids are being denied a competitive opportunity they've worked incredibly hard for. Every effort should be made to schedule this hearing as quickly as possible to minimize the disruption and difficulty this is causing them.

And there's no contradiction there. Suppose a judge is trying to set a case for trial. The defendant and his lawyer live out of town. There are two different dates that work for the judge and the plaintiff or prosecutor. The defendant speaks up and says it would be easier for him to make travel arrangements on the earlier date. There is nothing wrong with the court setting the trial for the earlier date if it doesn't cause any hardship to the other side.

That's the kind of discretion I hope ND is using here. Don't change the process, but just please make every effort to resolve the process as quickly as possible. Like Fortuna points out, we have absolutely no way of knowing whether ND is doing that. I hope it is. But the more time that goes by, the more I doubt it. I mean, the more time that goes by, the more I think that ND is the asshole judge who just refuses to give the defendant the earlier date for no reason except that he is afraid acceding to any reasonable request will make him look partial. I really hope that's not the case.

I agree with this - particularly since ND recognized the differences present and held a press conference (certainly not SOP) to protect its perceived interests. Failing to recognize these guys are unusually impacted by timing or refusing to make any accommodations for it would be incongruous.

I hope the 49 days away from football counts as "Time Served" once we do hear the fates of these guys.

This is not a legal trial of course but nonetheless it is the "American way" that those charged should be given a speedy trial. I think that tradition does justify an ethical obligation to move to a conclusion in a reasonable period.

This isn't Watergate so the lengthy time that has passed since the original press conference is quickly approaching an unreasonable length.

Totally agree. Seems like in this case the players were guilty until proven innocent. IF missing games is the punishment to anyone found guilty, let's hope they take into consideration the games the players already missed.

They also had the chance to have their football careers ended, forever, by a catastrophic injury....

Perhaps the University should be suing THEM, for a piece of their contract(s)?

I can't speak for the rest of us, but I would give 1 nut! Either, and the choice could be theirs to play 1 down for our University! I also agree!!

I honestly don't see Kelly and Jack keeping their silence for much longer. Their's, along with pretty much everyone else's, patience must be wearing thin. You can only hold off the hearings for so long. It's gotten to the point, where there's almost no other explanation other than the admin is blowing this off so they can feed their own ego. When this concludes, regardless of the outcome, if there isn't a legitimate explanation for the delay of the process, I expect somebody to be fired. Simply unacceptable.

It always cracks me up when Notre Dame and/or its fans on one hand try to down play the huge significance of the football program to the university, then on the other act like anyone ever allowed to so much as gaze upon the field has been granted a privilege beyond compare.

I'm starting to join the camp that thinks this is worse than most here speculated, and the University is taking every single possible appropriate measure to make sure ineligible players don't step back on the field.

If they are in contact with the NCAA to CYA and make sure full compliance is being utilized, then the delayed timetable makes sense, seeing everything moves in dog years with them.
