Safety play is concerning, if just for the reason that the coach there hasn't shown results yet --- but the athletes are available.

It's still for me the DTs. NOBODY that we have there has really proven anything. Even Tillery and Bonner have question marks if I'm honest with myself. Potential? Sure. We sign a lot of raw studs. Fact? Fingers crossed.

The only mediocre Virginia Tech defense that college football's genius DC, Bud Foster, had was because of thin DT player quality. If you can't stop the OLine pushing you around, you can't stop anything.

Like I said. I mean, "even Bonner", lol.

I'm stunned at the confidence in the DL. And not just the DT's, why are we suddenly confident in the DE position?

Similar to a funny thread on NDNation right now. Some guy is trying to argue that he'd rather have the WR's this year than 2015's

Bonner would be a solid backup, not even a great backup. He shouldn't be a starting DT at ND.

I actually have a lot of faith in the DEs. Trumbetti isn't even getting mentioned anymore and there was hype about his attitude/physical gains over the summer. Sounds like Jay Hayes and Daelin we can pencil in as 'really good starters', and the depth behind them is solid - Kahlid Kareem, Trumbetti, Okwara, Ade - all young but have been impressing in almost every practice report.

I think that it is not crazy to predict that we will have to slide some of the stouter DEs into the DT position (unless the freshmen are stunning). Elko has successfully used lighter faster DTs before. Of course we do not have, or no one else, a Nikita Whitlock, but Elko might create a crude simulacrum.

Whitlock much like Sheldon Day had a wicked fast first step, nobody on the roster is like that.

Counting down the days...I'm cautiously optimistic. I think 9 wins is very doable, and can see us doing 11. All starts on Saturday.

Yeah I think the 3rd down line will likely be Trumbetti - Tillery - J Hayes - D Hayes

It's not even about stouter vs lighter. Jay Hayes and Bonner are listed at the same size. I know they say they want to keep Jay outside, but I'd be shocked if he isn't rotating at least some at DT by the Georgia game. That also allows us to get our four most athletic d linemen (D Hayes, Tillery, Jay Hayes, Trumbetti) on the field at once.

The word "lighter" was not used. "Stouter" was. That is a football term meaning "stout at the point of attack." This is a concept that the player so described can survive the interior meathouse and, if necessary, "root-hog" the pile. We're talking about (or should be) a warrior type Mack Daddy who can stack up the OLine and maybe even get some push if needed --- regardless of what he weighs. I see these sorts of guys all over football --- many with Samoan names.

You mentioned stouter, and later said how Elko has used "lighter, faster" DTs in the past. Apologies for not intuiting your terms of art.
Either way, I'd agree we don't have anything approaching a true war daddy in the middle. Really we haven't since Nix. Bonner was originally recruited as a 240 lb linebacker, for Pete's sake. Daniel Cage might have been the closest on our current roster, but alas...
I think the best hope is that Bonner eats blocks to make space for the linebackers, while Tillery finds a way to penetrate and disrupt sometimes. Jay Hayes too. And that the freshmen are able to contribute 20 or so good snaps per game.
Man I wish we could have landed Scott Pagano.

So, Jamie U at ISD did some really good work on this a few months back. On 3rd downs Elko likes to use a Bear front. 3 down lineman and 2 edge defenders, whoever those might be. He could walk down Tranquill, bring in Trumbetti opposite D. Hayes, etc.

Point is he likes to crowd the LOS, so to speak, and make the offense guess on where the pressure is coming from. In some cases he'll drop 1 or 2 of the edge defenders and blitz up the middle with LB's. Point is, it will look different than just having 4 down lineman and rushing, in the traditional sense.

So what you are saying.. Perfect defense for Ishaq Williams...

I think Jay Hayes will be inside a lot this year if Bonner and Tillery struggle bonner has played well though and gotten pressure when giving the opportunity though. I will be happy just to see some pressure on the QB this week

ISD reporting Micah Drew Treadway will not play this week, as he was banged up in practice last week. Doesn't sound serious, sounds precautionary.

Either way - we have another DT out week 1. That makes Elijay Taylor, MDT, and Cage (quit football). And Hinish is a puker.

Curious to know what you mean by he's a puker?

I believe it was said within the last couple days that Hinish goes so hard every rep that he ends up puking.

I believe he only puked on the first day of camp. Could be wrong but I'm not sure he did after that.

Classic Koon, being dramatic for the sake of being dramatic.

I thought it was widely known that he puked at practice - I didn't mean to be confusing.

And I'm not taking a slight at him - if anything it's a compliment. No reason to be dramatic and act like I'm putting him down. It was mere humor.

You are probably right. I don't look at it as a bad thing anyway, but as you said... Classic Koon.

It was meant as a joke and if anything beyond that, a compliment. No reason for anyone's undies to get bundled up.
