Re: zone offense - Against L-ville the zone still gave us fits. How many times did Grant (in particular) jump while passing with nowhere to go or other team jumping passing lanes. We did a lot of things differently (and L-ville did not play it as effectively) that countered their zone better.

NBA has no zone, slash and dish style of Grant/DJ is more effective against man defense. Zone is a completely different animal. 1) Attacking from the top of the key only heads straight to the teeth of the zone. Dribble penetration needs to come from a wing or baseline with adequate options for outlet passes. 2) Auguste gets stripped all the time in high post, hands are not quick enough to bounce the ball back out or secure the ball from pesty 1 & 2s. Bonzi is a better option there, feels the zone better and better hands generally. Don't remember seeing much high post play at all last night, let alone second half. Versus L-ville we did.

Frustrating that these are coaching issues that a very novice basketball fan can articulate but our team goes cold for 13 minutes with no answers. At the core, Auguste being uncomfortable posting up is a big reason we struggle. He plays better off the ball and generally soils his shorts against the zones.

For tonight, I would love to see UNC beat VA. I don't feel good about our chances against Duke but at least if UNC wins the fans are more likely to stick around and root against the hated Blue Devils. Besides being an obvious easier opponent in the championship, they would also bring a lot more butts in the seats for a more exciting environment Saturday. Since I get free tickets to Saturday's game if Duke loses, I don't care that the ticket will be more expensive for others!

Looking forward to another late night. Got home at 1AM last night after sweating out the second half (able to move to half court third row at halftime). Taking my 11 year old so hopefully he brings good mojo. If we win it will be a classic for our program and I want to be there!

Awesome you're there, I'm pretty jealous. The old Big East Tourney was always on the bucket-list for me and my friend (he's a diehard Nova) fan but we kept putting off going which is one of my bigger sports regrets. We've never made a Conf Champ game, so hopefully you see ND make history tonight!

Agreed also with pulling for UNC for their fan support. It should be a pretty sweet environment tonight for both games.

I would obviously LOVE if we beat Duke and advanced to our first conference tourney final but beating Duke in this environment will take us firing on all cylinders and probably need them to be a little off too. What I really hope is that we avoid getting embarrassed like we were in Cameron.

Pretty good start. We've gotta keep at them, they're going to start to play eventually.

I don't watch much basketball but are knee pads "a thing" now?

Oh yes. We are living in an age of weak knees and basketball is such an easy sport to tear a ligament in there due to the radical movements made with your legs. Any movement could be your last.

So far amazing game, but I'm not holding my breath until it's over. They simply CANNOT repeat what happened yesterday.

This^. ND typically has a dominating half but rarely a dominating complete game. Everyone will expect a similar 2nd half to last night & I don't blame them. Connaughton hasn't hit a 3 since the first half of the Miami game. Grant has had some nice plays but he's also forcing a lot of plays. It'd be nice if he could break out in the 2nd half.

We gotta play them even until the first media timeout. We can't let them cut it to single digits right away. This crowd is going to crazy if Duke goes on any sort of a run (which they will), we gotta put it off for as long as possible.

Duke is playing BY FAR the worst 2-3 zone I have ever seen. It's comically bad. I mean, you're taught since 3rd grade not to give up the middle, and the middle of the zone is WIDE OPEN. Bonzi and Grant are just sitting there getting the ball every time, and Bonzi is getting wide open 8 footers every time down the court. And then our guards are driving it at will. As a coach, you beg your guards to find gaps in the defense (my 2-3 offense was called "Gaps" for that very reason) but you know that it is difficult to do. Not against Duke. It's like Coach K popped in Syracuse's defense in the film room and told his guys to do the exact opposite.

As great as we look, we will never see a zone this poor ever again. Unbelievable.

Edit: Now they're back in man 2 man.
