I thought that this week's press conference was about as good as they get. I was surprised at how forthcoming BK has been lately, and how he has answered questions in such great depth.

I kind of think it is refreshing. I see him as mostly devoid of coach-speak, save the obvious need to keep strategy under wrap, hide weaknesses, and not piss off opponents.

Then he was doing his job according to the objective of Notre Dame AND NBC when the contract was put in place. NBC did not want to be seen as an ND homer. They did not want their announcers to faun over the Irish like Keith Jackson did for USC and Michigan as well as any Rose Bowl conference team (Big 10 and PAC 10) that played ND on ABC. They didn't want to become the shill for a team (or today a conference) like ESPN is for the SEC or BTN and other conference announcers are.

Monk Malloy then president of UND was embarrassed by even more publicity for a sport he was trying to de-emphasize despite the fact that NBC revenue doesn't go to the football team or Athletic Department. NBC revenue funds Academic Scholarships.

Back at the time many ND fans assumed Hornung or one the long time Mutual Radio ND game announcers would get the Color Commentary gig, someone familiar with the history of UND and the football program. Malloy was adamant, no one with a tie to ND.

Within that context Mayock was by far the best announcer NBC/ND games have had since the contract was negotiated.

Sorry BGIF... I don't buy that ND and/or NBC doesn't have a vested interest in who announces games. Both have several millions dollars in interest. There is a difference in remaining neutral and going over the top for the other team. My only complaint about Mayock was the fact that he was more critical of the Irish than their opponents. His knowledge of the game is what I liked about him... his constant going out of his way to be critical of the Irish and turning a blind eye to the opponent in many instances was what I didn't like.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but I'd like to see a huge lead so the starters can rest most of the second half. I'd like to see them as fresh as possible for Clemson.

Nope, not a single person. We were all hoping for a too-close-for-comfort type game in which our starters are haggard and worn down. This should help teach them toughness while prepping for Clemson.

I take it you meant color guy only

I just can't agree with that as much as I liked what Mayock brought to the table. If you are talking color guys only... Bob Trumpy, Paul McGuire, Randy Cross & Chris Collinsworth were/are all great football color guys.

NBC used to run out an all star cast every week. They even had Jim Lampley doing the pre-game show. The 90's Irish broadcasts were loaded until they settled on Pat Haden in 98 or 99.

I wish Hammond, Mayock and Alex were still doing the games. That was as good as it was since the all stars of the 90's shared the booth.

We usually go to the bookstore before the games. How is it after the game, looks like it's open until 10 on gamedays. Anyone have suggestions, is it better to go before or after the game?

If you go early 9-11 it's not too bad. Noon until 3 will be packed. If you go after the game wait about 30-45 minutes. Seems a lot of the visiting fans hit the bookstore after the game. Not sure why. Bring lots of cash or plastic.

We're heading up at 8 AM, 4 hour drive so unfortunately 9-11 will not work. I do know to bring lots of money though, I always spend a ton of money there, this year will be even more since majority of my ND gear is now too big

I know it was discussed ad nasuem in the other thread, but after reading BK's comments, he handled that like a true professional. Everybody moves on and works on getting better. Personal responsibility, every person on the team needs to understand what that means.

Without a doubt, Kelly handled a 'kid' situation very parental. I see why he is being considered coach of the year.

He took them to the Final Four even. UMass hoops was pretty good in the mid-90s.

They were #1 most of the 95-96 season, pretty sure they went to the Final Four with just 1 loss. They lost to a great UK team in the Final Four but they beat them at the start of the season. I had a former teammate on both coaching staffs.

As good as Camby was in college, he'll never be any better than the #2 player in UMass history. Some guy named Julius averaged 25 & 20 during his career with the Minutemen.

I'm remarkably unexcited about today's game. This feeling isn't worth whatever relative certainty comes from playing cupcakes.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I don't understand not being excited to watch ND play, regardless of opponent.

Agree. I don't start flipping around from game to game until the ND one is done, even when they are playing crappy teams, or the game is a blowout. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything if something crazy is happening in another game, but feel antsy as hell when I miss a play or two during an ND game, even against a scrub.

I'm with you. We wait all year for these 12 Saturdays. As long as ND has a shot to win I'm excited.

Also, these potential blowout games are great because it gives us a look at how our backups are developing. My personal wishlist of players I want to see get some minutes today:

1. Wimbush
2. Nick Coleman
3. Equanimeous
4. Mykelti
5. JUSTIN BRENT

I'm glad you used the word "potential" in front of blowout. History tells us to tune in today and buckle up, in anticipation of some wild finish.
