Would he have to be accepted to grad school? Why can't he just take 5 years to graduate undergrad? Seems unlikely he will have finished his undergrad degree if he is out (of school) this whole year...

You have to apply for a 5th year.

But in that case it's typically people who have already graduated/are on track to in a normal four years. They're applying for a graduate program.

Here, Ishaq won't have graduated and will basically be finishing up whatever coursework remains for his bachelors. Probably not much (IIRC he was an EE, and with that plus summers I'd bet he was on track to graduate this semester - unless of course the cheating bit was that important to him).

Anyway, I'm sure he'd need to be re-admitted in some form. But I think the standard fifth-year rules might not apply here. Also, has anyone ever actually not gotten the fifth year?

Think about that statement. You cannot apply for a graduate program without having accomplished your undergraduate. That's like impossible.

I'd like to know when this became policy not preference. We have had this conversation before and determined that there was no way Julius Jones graduated before his 5th year. There were others brought up too, Gary Gray was one though he may have had enough summer credits to have pulled it off before year 5. I forget the others.

No one has ever provided proof that you must graduate by the end of your 4th year in order to play during your 5th (if you only played 3 of the first 4 years)

No is going to provide "proof" as that kind of information isn't published. ND sets requirements for re-admission on suspended students and doesn't make it public. I've never read any student making that known either. It's possible that those that miss school due to suspension are given some leeway as part of their "second chance" re-admission.

I believe Jones was out for the '02 season due to academic suspension (grades). I believe he moved to Arizona to train with his brother and to attend a local college while there. It's also common for athletes to take summer courses to reduce their Fall workload.

Keep in mind that an ND athlete that is in school for 4 years is expected to graduate in 4 years. Jones wasn't.

The ESPN report yesterday stated they were not all notified yet.

And if any of them were notified and decided to appeal, I assume they would still be enrolled until after that process is complete.

You're right, that the normal fifth year rules might not apply. But not in a good way. Normally, a player applying for a fifth year would have missed a season because of injury or simply not being ready to play. Every student at ND is expected to graduate in 4 years. A sophomore who has fallen behind on earning enough credits to be on pace to graduate in 4 can (not saying WILL, but can) be put on academic probation. That's how serious the University is about this principle. So you have to ask........ do you think that the University would make an exception to that rule, and allow an athlete a fifth year of eligibility, because they missed a season due to academic misconduct?

It only took real news from KVR to shut this thread down? How is there no rumor mill surrounding the other four right now?

If they were innocent they would be practicing... It has to be in appeal process with other 4 and I really don't think we see any of them this year

All downhill from here. Russell seemed to think he nailed his hearing, and yet is lost for the season. Getting DD back would be nice, but honestly I think we're not doing bad without him. The others are replaceable I guess. Glad our current roster got all the reps they did, they're better prepared now.

Nailing his hearing may be the only reason he's welcome back for next season (vs expulsion for the others?). Pure speculation.

Regardless of the complete outcome, this chapter of Kelly's book is going to be worth the price by itself. Can't wait.
