I think USC is going to try and crowd the line with 8 in the box we should start out running but I think we will need to throw as well maybe this is why Stepherson has been getting more involved in practice this week

Send Stepherson on Will Fuller's long TD route on our first offensive play?

I think ND justifies the week off by not having single days of class off for things like Labor Day. Instead of those single days, they use a week so kids can get back home, which is more difficult than many colleges because so many students are from so far away.

I just attended a session with my daughter for perspective students the week of the Miami OH game. Admissions says that the average distance an ND student travels to attend the university is 750 miles. Made my trip from PA seem short.

domestic student or just student. most likely skewed by international students if the latter.

Good point. I don't think it separated it out. Out of the approx 50 families in the room, very few were from Indiana or the Chicago area.

Utah is a very physical team. USC was already banged up, but they were pretty much guaranteed to come away from last weeks game with less healthy bodies.

Brandon Pili ready for starting role
Brandon Pili is preparing to step into a starting role at defensive tackle against Notre Dame after Josh Fatu was injured in a car accident.

Beads of sweat frolicked down the cheeks of Brandon Pili as he stopped to chat with the media on Wednesday. The freshman defensive tackle had just finished extra cardio-vascular conditioning. It was preparation for a new role Pili is likely to take on when USC travels to Notre Dame for a Saturday night showdown.

Pili kept his helmet in place atop his head as he answered questions about potentially taking over the starting nose tackle position. Incumbent senior starter Josh Fatu isn’t expected to play after suffering a concussion when he was involved in a multi-car accident earlier in the week.

“I feel comfortable. I feel like I belong with the ones,” Pili said before adding he is also feeling pressure. “I just feel like there's a big burden on me. Everybody is depending on me to step up and fill the role of nose guard — the heart of the defense, so it's much more stressful this week.”

Pili made his collegiate debut two weeks ago against Oregon State, playing 21 defensive snaps and added another 11 last Saturday. He has three tackles.

“He did some good things the last couple of weeks,” USC defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast said. “He's kind of been trial under fire so to speak, but he's made some progress. He's a big, athletic kid that is pretty good at the point of attack and we've just got to make sure that we keep an eye on him and make sure he plays with good gap integrity.”

After watching the film from his first two appearances, Pili feels confident in his abilities even as he strives to clean up some technical aspects.

“Assignment-wise I've been pretty good,” he said. “I'm pretty confident in myself. As a freshman, I'm really heavy, so it's going to be hard to move me.

“Still need to work on my footwork a little bit, my hand placement, playing double teams. I've been working on that all week.”

Pili expects to combat several of those this weekend against Notre Dame’s power rushing attack and knows he has to hold his ground in order for the defense to be successful. If he can force both blockers to stop him, it will leave the linebackers free behind him to come up and make plays in the hole.

“Notre Dame, they're real big, a real physical team. They got a lot of great offensive linemen, really big, really heavy. It's going to definitely be a challenge up front.”

Watch Brandon Pili talk about preparing for a starting role, what he’s learned, Notre Dame’s rushing attack and what he knew about the Trojans’ rivalry with the Irish while growing up in Alaska:

Put 8 in the box and watch Adams blow though the line for 70 yards on one of the first 2 or 3 plays. No more wind for their sails.

Anyone look into Elko's past performances after a bye week? I expect good things, but wonder if his history suggests that.

W/L's not as important because Wake wasn't good on offense, but specifically interested in how his defenses play after a bye.

I have an idea. You could look it up and report back. lol

maybe its just me but i am more worried about SC running the ball than throwing.

Terry Jillary will be looking to make amends for his "showing" last year.

Has to be a high ankle sprain.

Urgh. I had a high ankle sprain about 4 years ago playing flag football. I had a tennis ball size swell going on. Still feel it to this day if I keep my foot cocked onto its side causally for too long.

Hopefully he can recover to 100% by years end.

Be safe and pull over till morning if you feel rocky. Tired driving is no joke.

Very very true. Hope you have a good co-pilot.
I've made the ATL to SB drive many times with and without a copilot.

AC on full blast (or the windows rolled down, depending on how cold it is outside) and aggressive music were my go-to tricks when I had to drive tired.

No copilot but I'll be going to bed soon and waking up at 3 rather than trying to stay up until then. Need to get to South Bend with enough daylight to set up the campsite.
