No, VT, Duke & UVA are a little competitive. They're also in a P5 conference. There’s zero benefit in playing Navy. We ND fans respect them and acknowledge they're capable of upsetting any P5 team. Unfortunately, the perception nationally is that they’re still a “lowly academy” that is on par w/ a MAC school or worse. Even when they’re deservedly ranked, beating them does zero for ND this year other than keeping their extremely slim chances for a NY6 bid alive. Even then, a ton of teams ahead of ND have to lose.

Name one historic powerhouse or blue blood program that schedules the same G5 team every season? If Navy carried any weight with those who matter, they wouldn't be relegated to independence or the AAC. If they did, a Power 5 conference would've invited them.

It’s tough enough in today’s landscape playing less talented teams from the ACC who treat ND as a bowl game. You think tOSU fares better with the CFP committee in 2014 if they lose to Navy instead of a bad VT team? We know Navy is good and we know programs in their right mind wouldn't schedule them on a yearly basis, but that does not erase the perception that their still a “lowly academy” that any powerhouse should be embarrassed to be beaten by.

I’d much rather face a tough P5 opponent in the middle of November that had big time implications. For instance, even though ND is out of the CFP hunt, what if they could knock off a name program whois vying for their conference championship or even a CFP bid? When’s the last time ND got to ruin another team’s season? By watching the fans of teams that have ruined our season, it looks pretty fun. Playing Navy every year is not fun for anyone other than Navy.

But I’m all for compromise, so simply tell them ND will schedule them for as long as they wish provided that it’s the season opener. If not, stroke them a check for our gratitude and move on.

I do like the idea if you must play em play em first game every year

Then we aren’t in California every year.
The schedule stinks when every year you end on the road on the coast-that is an oversight/mistake-tradition be damned this should change-brutal hardheaded and stupid-Jack is great but someone should have their %^^*& kicked on this stupidity. I've been saying this since the '70's

I don’t know. We can’t have 4 home games in November. If I was a player, I would enjoy going to California, Florida, Arizona, etc in November. Just don’t do like last year and go three in a row west coast, East Coast, West Coast. That is stupid.

Oh stop whining. All of you. There’s nothing wrong with playing Navy. Nothing wrong with playing Stanford either.

to win and cover. It will be ugly early but look to Ian Book to make some plays and a disciplined defense to stop the Navy."

Then we aren’t in California every year.

What am I missing here? We want to be In Cali every year at the end of the year as a recruiting thing..? Right? It's a breadwinner even If we haven't won many battles in the last year or 2.

On another note. I just saw this article from NDInsider that said, "CFP No. 16 Notre Dame (7-2) and No. 23 Navy (7-1) meet for the first time since 1978 as ranked teams on both sides." I thought about this for a bit and gave up... Too much to think about....
What an amazing 41-year ride that Isn't going to be a sell-out.

This. The players have said they enjoy getting out of chilly South Bend for a few days in Cali. It's certainly a recruiting benefit too, it keeps a foot in the West Coast. You definitely have to plan your away games better though, no doubt.

I have some faith in Lea and what he can come up with today, however, Book and Long better not try to get overly cute. Hoping for early success and we stay with it. We have to avoid random 3 and out series with nonsensical play calling. Can we find that discipline ourselves today?

Curious to see how we prepared for the option this week. The defense had a terrific first half last year. Essentially put the game away by the half.

It’s not whining & it’s not 1991. ND needs to get into the real world when it comes to competitive advantages & scheduling is one of them. Why do you think powers like Bama, Auburn & Clemson schedule FCS opponents in mid-Nov before their big rivalry games? Saban has said he’d prefer playing more conference opponents & tougher OOC opponents but until the rules & CFP committee changes their minds, he’s going to keep scheduling the way e has been...which has been one of the factors that have gotten them into EVERY CFP thus far.

Tell Navy we have to play them in the opener or drop them. Stroke them a fat check for their trouble.

This game, my worry is not the outcome of the score but if the Irish can keep the ‘chop’ blockers in front of them and cover the lanes.

I don’t care how much I dislike or like any team, I hate to see a kid get hurt.

Exactly. Both are FCS programs. That means they’re only allowed 63 scholarships. Once you factor in attrition (injuries, suspensions, etc) by the time mid-November rolls around, that number can decrease even more. Sure an FCS program can spring an upset early in the season...but not in mid-November. Let’s call it what it is...an additional bye week to get healthy & to get the back ups meaningful reps. The way the system is devised right now, I don’t blame any program for doing the same thing.

Meanwhile ND gets to play a good team that no one outside of ND respects. If ND blows them out...they’re supposed to. If ND wins close...ND is overrated. If Navy wins, ND is overrated & any respect their program had gained is immediately lost. Now factor in the injuries. Remember cut blocks are legal. To be fair, ND has avoided injuries in this game as of late which tells me they’re overdue. I’d prefer if ND was matched up against a P5 team w/ some juice.

It's also a way to pad stats for their guys getting ready to jump to the NFL, nothing like a 467 and 5 night for Tua and 12-189-3 for Jeudy.

I get it - trust me. I don't understand why the Irish 'Brass' does not see the value of playing an institution (Navy not to be considered weak or less by any means) and give them some type of National exposure plus a considerable paycheck to help the opposition's program - whether it be upgrades to the facility, coaching, etc.... and ready the Irish for the (hopefully) post-season bowl/play-offs.

Because they can easily get in as the top G5 team whereas we are getting screwed this year by conference tieins.

Ok, Makes sense. Is there any chance if we win out that we can get in on brand alone?

Book has 5 seconds to throw the ball, rolls and gets a yard.

Its clearly a schematic issue if Notre Dame receivers cant get separation against fucking Navy.

Sounds like several Navy fans are there, or the Middies are especially loud early.
