Our company bought a block of 150 tickets one year at the low price of $10/ticket. Great deal for the staff and their family to be able to go to a game.
it's better to do this then let the seats sit empty and not get anything for them.

Totally agree. I just wonder if they did that already with the BC game or Bowling Green game and can't reach out to do it again...or did reach out and were told no.

Isn't it more likely that they died? Then that they're pissed about a jumbotron?

Also why is he making it sound as if we have to choose between 78k filled with greyhairs and 75k of young rowdy fans? Can't we have 78k of young energetic fans?

I'm sure some did, but it's not exactly a secret that plenty of traditionalists have been very upset with BK and Swarbrick putting in turf and installing the big screen, not to mention the noise they are now pumping in with the speakers, taking away from the band playing as much as they used to.

They feel like it takes away from the "ND experience" and tradition of the House that Rock built.....even though Rockne was known to be a great innovator, so that's pretty ironic.

Biggest tradition should be winning. Something we need to live in the 21st century to do.

Well, our 16 game home streak is one of the longest in the nation behind Clemson, UCF and OSU so they're doing something right.

Winning night road games (outside of Duke) has been the bigger issue.

I mean the further away we get from a championship, the more this is going to happen. Millennials have zero memory of NDs championship glory. And it’s fading for those of us who lived through a couple. ND has GOT to get serious about winning a championship soon, or this is going to become a trend that will only get worse.

Playing Navy is a weird experience, because some games I've gone in stressed, and then we blow them out and/or beat them handedly. Other games, I've been lax on, and then they play us in a close one or beat us. They are usually well-disciplined and dominate the clock, and also throw in some cheap/dangerous plays. It's not often that it's an enjoyable game.

I hope your stressed.

True. But we see them every year. And almost every significant player on our defense saw them last year, some the year before as well. We practice for them. And we have a great defensive coordinator. We're better equipped than most to deal with Navy.

This. I think we’re way better equipped to deal with them now than ever. Talent gap larger coupled with better prep and adjustments from the DC

Yep, BVG is not here.

That's the first time since the early 70s, right?

But yeah, I'm not sure how that happens. We've played way less compelling games than this one over the last 40 years. Can't they, like, bus in a few regiments from the Great Lakes Navy Base or something?

Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 1973 against Air Force. My wife and I were married earlier in the year. We got tix for the Sparty game, my first ever. During the game they announced tickets were available for the AF game. Her family and my family were pestering us to spend Thanksgiving with them. As soon as they made that announcement, I looked at her and said, problem solved. We did our part to keep the streak alive, but it wasn't enough. Weather was great, with temps in the 60's.

Idk man. I loved playing on a natural grass field but playing in the Midwest, it is near impossible to keep it in good condition through November, even at a place like ND.

IIRC it was like playing in a mud pit and we had a ton of injuries as a result.

And not that it really matters at a cash cow like ND, but they probably save a ton not worrying about the grounds crew keeping it up to snuff.

JS's fault Chuck Dutton had to go back to trash management services and Rudy has no place to sleep.

This seems to be the protocol when a game is not sold out and I doubt there is a max on how many times they can ask. My guess is they made contacts and were told "no" by most of them.

Soooo...ultimately, the sell out streak coming to an end is Mayor Pete's fault for not giving JS more options to work with.

Sorry guys, this may be out of context. I posted this to another thread but it's all about Navy and ND... I think?
____________________________________________

Thanks for the post. To my embarrassment, I only learned the significance of the perpetually scheduled Navy game about 15 years ago. Not that I'm right or even representative, but I really appreciate this game both in terms of history and tradition.

Lately, I have come to understand some of the dissenting opinions and recognize the frustration. I still think that this games shows the class, loyalty and humility that is ND. As one poster questioned several months ago, "For how long? Is our debt not paid?" or something to the effect.

I never went to ND but have donated directly to some of their causes. I buy their licensed products. I don't get a say... nor should I. I appreciated the history, tradition and legends but I see the Navy game as a very special moment in both football, history and gratitude.

I have no affiliations with Navy either, aside from an emotional visit to Pearl Harbor and laying my hand on the site of surrender on the deck of the USS Missouri and the mesmerizing oil releases from the USS Arizona. I only learned about the USS Oklahoma while I was there. Shame on me.

I had two distant relatives (great uncles) that were killed serving on HMS Hood by the Bismarck. Obviously, I did not know them and it did not affect my life. The remaining brother, when we visited in London, was proud of their service and equally saddened by their absence.

Just offering a different perspective but I do understand the differing opinions.

Cheers and Go Irish!!

Brah, stop drinkin', it's not even Friday yet. Also, read up on the history of why ND schedules Navy every year.

Yeah, everyone's got it at this point. They would have shut down for a few years and then reopened. Debt has been paid 700 million times over.

That's an assumption. They for certain were going to shut down, but there were no guarantees they would be able to reopen without the Navy stepping in. As such, the debt can never really be repaid as long as the school remains open. We play Navy until they no longer want to play us.

No one complained about scheduling Navy when they were a walk over. Now they get a little competitive and we need to cancel them asap!

I honestly didn't care about it until I was older and noticed all the injuries that happened from the chop blocks. At this point, I wouldn't mind seeing them take a few years off in between playing them.

Every other year games would be fine I think

An every other year rotation of Navy and Purdue/Michigan State perhaps?

I sincerely love the traditional Navy match-up but a rotation with another school like a Purdue or Mich. St. would be a nice mix. I'm not saying we break up with Navy but simply take a year break just to see it how it feels. It's not you Navy it's us.

dump Stanford for MSU, then move the USC game to the last game of the year every year.

No, VT, Duke & UVA are a little competitive. They're also in a P5 conference. There’s zero benefit in playing Navy. We ND fans respect them and acknowledge they're capable of upsetting any P5 team. Unfortunately, the perception nationally is that they’re still a “lowly academy” that is on par w/ a MAC school or worse. Even when they’re deservedly ranked, beating them does zero for ND this year other than keeping their extremely slim chances for a NY6 bid alive. Even then, a ton of teams ahead of ND have to lose.

Name one historic powerhouse or blue blood program that schedules the same G5 team every season? If Navy carried any weight with those who matter, they wouldn't be relegated to independence or the AAC. If they did, a Power 5 conference would've invited them.

It’s tough enough in today’s landscape playing less talented teams from the ACC who treat ND as a bowl game. You think tOSU fares better with the CFP committee in 2014 if they lose to Navy instead of a bad VT team? We know Navy is good and we know programs in their right mind wouldn't schedule them on a yearly basis, but that does not erase the perception that their still a “lowly academy” that any powerhouse should be embarrassed to be beaten by.

I’d much rather face a tough P5 opponent in the middle of November that had big time implications. For instance, even though ND is out of the CFP hunt, what if they could knock off a name program whois vying for their conference championship or even a CFP bid? When’s the last time ND got to ruin another team’s season? By watching the fans of teams that have ruined our season, it looks pretty fun. Playing Navy every year is not fun for anyone other than Navy.

But I’m all for compromise, so simply tell them ND will schedule them for as long as they wish provided that it’s the season opener. If not, stroke them a check for our gratitude and move on.
