Is Quinn still expected to join the staff? If he's not OC seems like a waste of a assistant spot. His background is OL and I doubt he would be one of our bettter recruiters. Would be better as a analyst.

It's not just the assistant from Stanford. There is also a guy who isn't in college football that I actually think is a superb outside-the-box hire and probably more important than Steen. They'll each have different roles and I think will make great strides modernizing all of ND's S&C. Grant Steen's last two stops were definitely good ones, and the other coach -- like the other hires we've seen recently -- does a lot to help recruiting efforts in the immediate future. ND certainly getting aggressive with these new hires and contracts.

Is there a name we can attach to this other individual?

Tommy Rees tells me he has not had any talks with Notre Dame about being the quarterbacks coach.

The classic non-denial denial.

Rees has an agent who is trying to find him a future after San Diego.

It would be a good fit.

From the tweets, it didn't sound like he was doing the classic non-denial denial, more like the aggressive denial. He should learn that you don't have to intentionally mislead media and a simple I decline to comment is perfectly reasonable.

Tommy Rees tells me he has not had any talks with Notre Dame about being the quarterbacks coach. "This whole thing was news to me," he said.

Rees has not interviewed for the Notre Dame QB coach job in any capacity, he said. "It's not true."

This will be interesting to follow. Given Tommy's background, I think he would make a great coach. He was raised to think like a coach.

Lax can defend himself here but I dont like it either. It seems like a filler hire. He could have easily promoted Quinn but he or ND went outside to pull in a guy who doesnt have much top flight experience. Maybe BK wants a guy to do what he wants him to? Maybe ND said screw you BK this is who you will be working with? Lots of huge question marks are around this hiring.

This goes back to what I've posted several times. Kelly was put on red alert and knows he had to do something to save his job. Even though he wasn't calling plays, promoting Quinn would have been another example of status quo (staying in his comfort zone of who he knows) IMO.

How about a game of clues. That was a huge success the last time.

Still my all-time favorite alternate ND uni. I wish they'd go back to something like that for the Shamrock Series games.

Notre Dame fans should pay close attention to the Rose Bowl because you're next HC might be calling plays for Penn State.

Fordham is his head coaching experience...I'm thinking he at least needs to be at a lower tier DIA school as HC first...but who really knows anymore.

First ND practice if Rees is hired:

Wimbush: "Coach I'm not sure what you want me to do here? I read the DE and pulled the hand off like I'm supposed to so what are you saying's next again?"

CTR: "Don't talk that read option, mumbo jumbo to me, you throw a jump ball to a 6-5 WR/TE or take the sack dammit."

I will say this about Rees... he got the ball out of his hand fast and to the right guy way more often than most QBs. If he can teach that, then I'd be happy with him as a QB coach.

I am on board with this hire(if it happens), I always liked Rees as a player, didn't have all the physical tools but man he gave us some good wins.

The qb coach is a good spot for him, Kelly will have the final say on how the qb's are trained and coached so I don't see how a Rees hire could hurt anything. Kelly probably views it that way as well, a low risk/ possible high reward type hire.

If he can come in and relate to young players, which I believe he will be able to since he just finished his playing days 3 years ago, I think it's worth a shot.

That picture was the turning point in that game. A TD there and they were done. Ugh.

Nah, the turning point was when the defense gave up 89 points in the 4th quarter to Michigan. The fumble was bad, but that game was turning before it happened. People just like to blame Tommy because he's a convenient target. That game was lost by the defense.

If Tommy Rees had wheels, he'd not have gotten busted for underage drinking.........

What's Ron Powlus doing at ND?

Why is Rees coming in better than Powlus coming down from the box?

...and Rees ran half the offense tops. Not saying he can't coach it but there's no reason he should be able to coach it any better than Powlus.

The only other reasons I could see would be possible better relationship and younger individual that wont give Kelly any push back.
