Had a day off work on Friday and the girlfriend and her son were both busy so I spent the whole day at the theater. Ended up seeing Dr Strange, Hacksaw Ridge, Arrival, and The Accountant. All were good but the last 3 were especially good. Super happy I decided to spend my day watching all these and I just can't see how someone wouldn't like the last 3 I mentioned. Dr Strange was a good movie too but the others really stood out. I'll sum up my thoughts on them below without ruining anything or any spoilers.
Hacksaw Ridge was probably the best one as far as movie making and it was such a good, inspiring story about an insanely brave dude with brass balls who wouldn't budge on his morals or beliefs. I had a buddy tell me he didn't care to see it because it looked too light-hearted and "Disneyish" for him...let me tell you, that couldn't be further from what this movie is. More along the lines of a Saving Private Ryan type movie than anything else. Hugo Weaving was great as Doss' father, I love Vince Vaughn in his limited serious roles he takes on like this one (don't care for the same recycled comedic character he usually plays) and Andrew Garfield as Doss (the main character) was great as well. The movie was as intense as it gets and Mel Gibson and this movie deserve some serious credit even though they probably won't get it from the critics/award shows. Haven't heard a bad thing about it from people who have actually seen it though.
Arrival was another great movie. Felt like a mix between movies like Inception and Donnie Darko. Not a linear story line and it was just as much about Amy Adams character (and Jeremy Renner's to a lesser extent) as it was about the aliens that have landed ships at various spots on Earth. Definitely a movie that makes you think and makes you put together some pieces and I'm a huge fan of those types of movies. I'll definitely be seeing it again and I'm sure I'll get more out of it on the second go round.
The Accountant....holy shit, it was awesome. I used to avoid anything with Ben Affleck but ever since The Town he has become one of my favorite actors. I'll go see any movie with him in it. In this one his character was like a mix between Rainman and Jason Bourne. He's autistic but can crunch numbers better than any mathematician and has a laser like focus that allows him to become a complete badass in any form of combat he decides to train in. The autism/asperger's also makes him very socially awkward which makes for a few hilarious scenes. Such a great, kickass type movie. If you like the Bourne movies you'll love this one. It was also directed by the director of Warrior which is one of my favorite movies of all time. This one is right up there as well. Probably my favorite of the 4 I saw on Friday as far as pure entertainment. Anna Kendrick was also in it for any of you who like to gawk at her. J.K. Simmons as well in a lesser role but he was still good like he always is.
Hard to put them in order of which I like the most as it would depend on what kind of mood I am in but at the time of watching them I would say:
The Accountant
Hacksaw Ridge
Arrival
Dr. Strange
The top 3 could be in any order though depending on the day and what I'm in the mood to see at the time. And I'm also not saying Dr Strange was bad...just not as good as the others.
