2 things here. The reference to Bart star is 2 professionals being paid to play football. It's allowed in that sense.

I agree he has made mistakes, I don't disagree with calling someone out. My issue is with him saying a press conference is not the time or the place to call out a paid professional but it is the time and place to call out a student athlete. This isn't an issue of me not thinking did or didn't make mistakes.

Understood. I just don't think he called Kizer out. Someone asked him if he meant that Kizer's position was open, like everyone else's. He said yes, and went on to point out some things that Kizer had done that could have made the difference in winning and losing. Kelly is a QB guy. He knows the position. He's naturally going to be more critical of that position.

There's no motivating Eric Hansen.

May be the funniest thing I ever heard related to ND football media!

REALLY!

And, speaking of which, so my friend Podge called first thing this morning, and asked my if I had heard the news. I of course said, "No," because I had no idea of which he spake. In his true, and most irritating Irish fashion he remained silent.

Finally I asked him, what news, and of course he acted startled, as if I were psychic for gleaning that there was a new piece of news this fine morning.

In response to my inquiry, he replied that BVG had a job. That is where he had me hooked. I asked him where and what.

He replied "Tufts University." I am sure the first syllable of my expressed incredulity was hanging on the air when he interjected that BVG would be teaching 'Mandarin Chinese.'

My friend Podge, is an effin' idiot.

His serenity prayer :

God,grant me the serenty to refuse to think that football is just a silly game.
And that Notre Dame's football program cant win;
because of bullshit talking points; such as talent factor and academics.
And to hope that somewhere there may exist a coaching messiah; if in fact that Kelly's best days are behind him.

I found his statements in the pressed to be very odd. It almost sounded like over the past few years he gave complete control over defensive decisions to BVG. I mean if BK felt as strongly as he made it sound about the right players not being on the field, th scheme being too complicated, play re getting too many reps, players feeling like they are not being given chances why the hell did he not step in and tell BVG to change? It's like he had no clue what he as going on from a defensive standpoint. It just seems very odd.

As a side note, I am calling absolute bullshit on BK when he said that is was "absolutely his decision to fire BVG". Everything he said in reference to BVG up to that position it contradicts that.

BK is also wearing on me very quickly. So let me get this straight. You don't think a press conference is the time or place to call out a coach who is getting paid to coach for a living and nothing else. But it is the proper time to call out a 20 year old kid who is going to school, being an upstanding citizen, representing the university the way he should, being a team leader and plays football in the mean time and doesn't get paid should be called out during the press conference? And then you double down at your Tuesday press conference and say he essentially isn't living up to your personal expectations so he deserves that criticism? And then you are going to come out and say when a reporter asks you if that is that is the proper way to motivate a player and you say no? That pisses me off and is absolute bullshit. If it wasn't for kizer BK your team would have been beat by 3 touchdowns at least and your ass may be gone. Maybe your expectations are bullshit and need to be brought into perspective.

I agree.

Seems to me he was thinking on the fly, and by on the fly, I mean when he was already talking. I don't think that this guy ever thought his job would be in jeopardy (Kelly), but I think it is, and was put there officially when Kelly spoke with Swarbrick this weekend past.

Regardless, Kelly expressed (clearly) what he shared in that presser to the players, most probably privately in person, and before that presser, so I think a lot of the anger toward Kelly for the way he acted can be ameliorated by the fan base. But the fact that he clearly didn't lay it on his assistants, is the part that doesn't, or shouldn't go away.

Ironically, the interesting part is that I think BVG was the face of the overly serious, negatively critical presence with this team on the inside. Much like I have seen many of the Kelly critics, and the Kelly critic critics, throughout this whole episode.

I think that Greg Hudson is very positive, hard working, and smart. I have never heard anyone say that he rags people. And let's face it, if you go back and check the player imitations of BVG, it was all pretty negative stuff. (Indicating the view of youngsters toward their coach.)

Most interesting is the fact that all of this going on was ignored so long by Kelly. I guess he thought it would work itself out. And of course it never does.

Most interesting to me has been :
  • Kelly talking about fatigue being a factor, indicating that the thinks that too few of players were playing, and that some players were being overworked, past their efficient capacity.
  • That the defense was too complex, as Kelly made a statement to the effect that the players only had 20 hours a week for football and a full time course load on top of that.
  • And that guys like Jay Hayes needed to play. (Which indicates to me BVG was in charge of the defensive roster, and he played who he wanted.)
The players in interview yesterday indicated two things to me, (in so many words), that Kelly asked them what they needed, and they painted a much different picture of the program than Kelly had, which shocked him. And that Kelly was going to be true to his word in playing the bench, which has never really happened on a Kelly team, especially since BVG got here.

At any rate GKautz, thanks for the scintillating and thought provoking comments and taking the conversation past the usual low level it settles to on a public board.

Getting a DC with a name/identity/reputation is desirable and even preferable...not silly, that is very basic understanding of how you turn things around quickly.

Its like the jackass star argument...having higher rated kids consistently leads to more wins...can you win with lesser athletes...boy don't the ND faithful know it...but odds are the talent wins

...same in coaching

So, you don't think that Notre Dame is a big enough name again to attract players, even when our former DC was not even recruiting, as we were pulling in great players? We do not "NEED" a name other than ND--because we can offer them weekly TV exposure, literally, one of the largest fanbases in the nation (and probably the largest by looking at the population of the school, since there are very few schools as small as ND in D1, or capable of remaining in D1, for that matter) and get to play all over the nation? Sorry, but anyone without a "name" can sell that, and they have been for decades. It is far easier to sell that now that ND has been rebuilt to become a bigger national power again. There is no need to just jump at a name. Find the right person that fits, period.

BVG is an old friend of Coach Kelly.

Kelly likes to keep things familiar, and when Diaco moved on, it was a comfortable move. (It took a while to make and made everyone feel like they were in limbo, kind of like recruiting when he was first hired). I don't agree with people who think this hiring was the result of a wide coaching search that aggressively targeted . I think he hired him thinking it was a no-brainer.

BVG has an excellent pedigree, that starts with small college football. He also knows a whole lot about X and Os, and can talk with anyone.

BVG is a little intimidating and is probably not easy to direct without confrontation. I'm sure it was very difficult to tamper with BVG unless you are willing to go after it, and Kelly was VERY worried about the offense and the QBs in 2014 and 2015.

Year 1: BVG started very strong ended with a whimper. Year 1 is Year 1. Kelly is more worried about the offense.

Year 2: We looked good sometimes, but mostly bad, but we went 10-3 and had some clear culprits to blame (Schmidt, injuries, etc.). Hard to fire a friend after 10-3!

Year 3: Defense is a disaster...

That worked pre-holtz. In case you haven't noticed, the ND defense has not excelled consistently SINCE ALVAREZ. name/brand/identity starts fast and SUSTAINS recruiting and builds based on the recruiting and development...ND, with all the attributes you cite has done exactly NONE of that consistently.

I am fine with someone who has done something at a lesser level with lesser players, but in order to build a program, that will take time...the name/brand/identity , if you can get it, accelerates the process. I think it is silly to think some up and comer is going to out recruit an Aranda in years 1 and 2...just not happening. That doesn't mean a good defensive coach can't get results with what ND has / will have, but it'll have to be done w/o 5 stars, and with some 3 stars. Those who recruit and retain the high star guys tend to do better early and over the long haul...just an eternal truth...

I don't think ND will have an easy time pulling a qualified head coach, and I don't think ND will have an easy time pulling a brand DC...but there is no denying the preference for doing so.

I think you bring up good points my concern is I don't want the Dan Snyder effect. I'm afraid we have to over spend so much to get a brand name head coach that essentially they've made so much money they have little incentive to actually do what they need to do here. In essence the same way the Washington Redskins have done business over the last couple of decades.

Ultimately Notre Dame needs to decide whether they're ok being a top 20 team or if they really want to be a national championship contender. They're going to have to make concessions if they want to be the latter. That includes Junior College transfers living off campus and other things as well. My feeling is they will choose the former.

I preferred this all-too realistic "State of the Program" address from an opponent's perspective:

The thing about Kelly is he typically peaks in the 3rd year of his coaching. This happened at Central Michigan, Cincinnati, and Notre Dame. After his 3rd year at ND, he decided to keep with the cycle. The 4th and 5th years built toward him peaking last year in his 6th season (10 wins, almost made the playoffs.) This year is his 7th year, which unfortunately is the first year in the cycle. Expect a better season next year and another 10+ win season in year 9.

Sometimes a coach just has to stick with doing what he does best.

With all the freshmen and Sophomores on the roster I could see '18 being a good year.

I feel kind of the same way, but the future has almost always looked bright based on the young guys who have contributed.

It will be interesting to see the direction this program goes over the rest of the year, into the next.

The offensive talent in the sophomore and freshmen classes is just stupid, and should be plenty to keep the offense as one of the best in the country. The defense and its future are the issue, as well as general retention of talent, which is always a question.

Minter under Holtz was lights out for nearly as long. If they hadn't given Bowden the lifetime achievement award, his defensive work would have been just as distinguished.

Remove Booker & BVG. Add Mike Tressell (DC) and Mike Elko (Ass. HC & Safeties Coach). Let Sanford take over OC. Denbrock (WR & Special Teams Co-Ordinator).

In my perfect world.

Edit. Remove Tressel. Give Elko the DC job. Marty Biagi as Special Teams Co-ordinator & Safeties coach. Denbrock as WR & TE coach. Sanford OC/QB. Booker not retained (Big fan of his recruiting work, but his units have always looked sloppy to me).

Also, Strength and Conditioning looks weird to me. I understand Longo and Flint, but it seems like we are just parking Quinn & Grimes there so we can move them around as needed (Just from looking at their previous experience and skillsets, neither seem to come from a Sterngth & Conditioning background)). Is the dynamic different, have they both committed to being S&C coaches or are we under-resourcing a pretty important element of the coaching staff ?

What makes anyone think Mike Tressel would even come here? He's been with Dantonio for 13 years now. Seems if we want Tressel, we might have to hire Dantonio as well. And I'm not so sure that's as slam dunk of an offer/hire as some believe either.

Plain and simple. Dantonio is running the defense up there. The only reason he hired Tressel was as a favor to his buddy, Sweater Vest.

Then why is everyone so hard for Narduzzi if it's really Dantonio's D? Are we assuming Dantionio only started running the D since he left or are we saying it's always been Dantonio's show?

I like Elko, and wouldn't be upset with that choice. He's not the top of the list, but I realize the top of the list, isn't realistic.

If Kelly is here next year I would like to see a shake up in his staff beyond just the DC. Like others, Longo and Booker would be two I wouldn't mind being replaced. Maybe he can get some of his assistants back from Urban...jk. But it would be nice to have a staff with a proven DC. Coombs as the DB/SPT Co..Alford coaching the receivers(although he's a RB coach he did coach receivers/slots for a couple years) Denbrock at TE, Ed W. at OL and Sanford calling the plays. We could dream right?

Because we'd be offering a promotion and 3x his current salary.
