14 tackles, 2.5 TFL, and a sack today.

Sweet Jesus.

And he's probably just scratching the surface of his real potential. I knew he was awfully good coming out of Bishop Luers, but my God........he's certainly impressed me more than Manti did at that age. I know they were different types, however, his speed and skill, is unmatched from any other LB I've seen in college this year.

He's on pace for 108 tackles, 16 TFL and 5 sacks... he may be an all american this year!

The guy was all over the field yesterday. They had zero answers for him.

What a great kid. No doubt in my mind he deserves to be in the conversation this year. If we win at FSU, ASU, and USC, and he has big games in all of them, how can he not be!! I think though regardless, he'll get overlooked due some pre-existing watchlist guys, but it would not shock me.

None. We blitzed him off our left, they went screen right, he makes a huge tackle twenty yards down field to save an even bigger play.

Later in game they ran an ISO right at him. He diagnosed/filled hole so fast that the lead block was destroyed and shed for a tfl.

If you get a chance watch the game over and only watch him. His effort in flying to the football is unmatched.

His skill set is unmatched.

All American next year? He's the best player on every defense in the country.

He might not have your typical signature plays to date, but he makes 8 yard runs 0 yard runs all day long.

I got ripped when I said 'I love his bowling ball celebration'. Still don't know what it is if it's not that.

He explains it in one of the segments of the latest "Onward Notre Dame" that aired yesterday before the game.

Yup, I want to see him get a pick and house it too. He's such a freak!

I remember his senior year, watching him at Toledo against Whitmer, which was the big school runner up in the state that year. There was one play when the Whitmer quarterback saw him while he was dropping back, and then Smith came. It was all the Whitmer quarterback could do to launch the ball. I could see his eyes. He was terrified because he just couldn't understand how he covered that much ground so quickly. His eyes were like saucers!

In fairness, neither could I. It was unlike anything I had ever seen in all my years at the high school level. And I saw guys like Woodson play. That was before Jaylon's legs got big. Now he may be even faster.

It would never happen, but it'd be fun to see him lined him up at TE/WR in the redzone

Never say never. If he is still here in two years, and if we have depth, I can see BK allowing a little fun against a Purdue or someone not so challenging. Jaylon lining up in the backfield would make some DCs buttholes pucker, or at least confused as hell. I think he actually joked last year about telling BK he wanted a couple carries.

People hyping him up for All-American next season? I think he is pretty much a lock to at least make 3rd team and a favorite to be on the first team. He already has a defensive player of the week award, and is probably the front runner to win it for yesterday too.

Notre Dame's Jaylon Smith earns weekly Lott Impact Award

Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith was named the impact player of the week by the Lott Award on Tuesday, marking the second time this season the Irish standout has received the award. Smith won the award following his week two performance against Michigan in which he had 10 tackles in the 31-0 shutout of Michigan.

Smith had 14 tackes, 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack in Notre Dame's come-from-behind 17-14 victory over Stanford on Saturday. A $1,000 donation to Notre Dame's general scholarship fund will be made in Smith's name.

The Lott Trophy was established to honor college football's defensive impact player of the year. Previous weekly winners this season include Eric Kendricks of UCLA, Hau'oli Kikaha of Washington and Randy Gregory of Nebraska.

That's great! When all is said and done he will be a legend in ND lore. What an amazing young man this kid is. He represents the school and himself so well.

He's the total package. As smart as he is athletic, as hard working as he is naturally gifted and seems to be just as good of a kid as he is a player. As a selfish fan, I hope he stays for four years.

Me too. I really feel like he will though. He is an ND man like Te'o and really gets what that place is all about. Will enjoy every game that he dons a gold helmet!

If we keep winning, Jaylon will have the inside track on winning the Lott this year. No one else has won the weekly award twice this season so far.
