I can vouch for arndtjc, Some Irish Bloke, Irish #1, scUM Sucks, IrishLion, and NDinLA. They were all stand up dudes at tailgates. Arn will make sure there's plenty of Jameson, and Bloke cooks some mean food. Lion is above taking bribes to have posters banned, but maybe I didn't offer enough. I think I met NDRock for like 3 minutes before one game, can't remember. Irish2155 was supposed to hook up with us at Louisville last year, but he was too hammered to find us  The drunk texts during the game were a riot though.

Still kicking myself for that. I'd had been there if I wasn't with Pops. I'm trying to talk her into going to a game this year, so maybe we can do a rain check? I'll be on better behavior with her, and we'll have to save the Brass talk for a different day...LOL ;)

I'm broke af my dude. I'm a teacher and coach. I have been thinking of going to more games and just tailgating though.

Yes, it certainly can get pricey. I lucked out for about 5 years b/c my ex was from up there and her family had season tickets, but certainly don't go as much as I used to then. I liked when they played PU more because WL is pretty easy for me to get to.

I've also been on a handful of occasions just to tailgate without a ticket. I've found that plenty of tailgates have TVs to watch the game and once it starts things clear out pretty quickly. People are always nice and typically don't mind if you watch the game at their tailgate. Or, of course, a local bar is always an option too...especially if you run out of beer.

SIAP, but is Lax’s ban a timeout or permanent? Should just be able to ban users from specific forums/threads. In terms of football/recruiting he’s one of the best here.
It was only for 24 hours.

I believe we looked at that years ago when I was a mod but the BB software doesn't allow it.

Regardless this is an ND board not a Michigan board, people should have the sense to:

Who did?

Full disclosure: I kinda Koon'd him with a faux outrage campaign about white WR stereotype (regarding Jay Brunelle I think???) He was getting on even my nerves and was just showing up to gloat instead of doing what the Bama guys do: just move in and sleep in our digital guest room w/o reminding us daily how utterly fantastic they are.

I mean, I get up at 4am everyday and check Bishop's RIP postings to make sure I'm not on it.
Yeah but he would've gotten banned after last year's game in Ann Arbor anyways

Generally a good day for me as concerns IE... but I miss Bogs and Wooly and Cack and ND-in-LA et al that a lot of the attitudes often given free rein on IE have cost the site. (even Neutered, who I had no issues with myself ... I get that some others did, but not me ... he and I had good conversations even off line in internet space)

There's been plenty of bullying here and loads more of ganging up. I guess that there is no real answer for that as it requires civil collegial respect for one another. Current politics have (it seems to me) driven lots of people anti-socially crazy. Sacred cows are running in stampede.

... and the real (?) enemy: posting while drunk. Sometimes THAT's pretty obvious and sometimes the guy will even admit it later.

I've tried to "give up IE (not only) for Lent" but there are many aspects of the site that are interesting. But I hate the closed-minded high testosterone highschool debate-style non-discussion. (But I realize that many feel that this is the purpose of an internet site. I was once told after someone posted a particularly off base comment "that we make jokes here; that's what IE is all about." When I made a joke comment in another thread that was straight out of the movie Airplane, negs rained and one mod went on a rampage.) These are just examples of the arbitrariness of whose feathers get ruffled.

Thanks to Beau and the saner of the mods who try hard to keep this place a viable location to visit. A hard thankless job it seems to me..........

Mods,
I’m not on here quite as much as others and don’t post too often, but I really appreciate the job y’all do. This forum is a great source of info for fans like myself to keep my ear to the ground about ND and generally interact with others. I always miss the lead up to these bans but you are appreciated.

It has been a while since I've done anything other than logon and see if we got a commit so I could post my stupid gif I like to post. Not sure why I even opened the thread today.

But holy shit. I don't know what's more shocking, Lax banned, Koon finally went too far, TP posted, or Whiskey changed his avatar.

Strange times

Can’t believe it was Beau who pulled the trigger after all these years.

He wouldn’t have been in the field when Koon won his first “most likely to get banned” award. Before then we lost Bogs, Wooly, Buster, Pat, and Cack. STL, Chiirish, GB, Johnnykillz, Ironman, LA are basically retired.

Brian Kelly is going to outlast all of us at this rate.

This would make for a great zoom happy hour until Wooly started making mom jokes and Bogs scolded him. Actually, this would unravel pretty quickly.

Of course they have, God predestined his only begotten son to become the first surfer.

So wait. Lax got banned for sort of doxing Koon? Wasn't Koon always public? He's shared photos of himself and his wife. He talks about where he works, what property he owns in which cities, and I'm pretty sure he's shared his personal Twitter account. What did I miss?

Yeah this pretty much spot on. The entire thing was manufactured outrage. But to be clear, I 100% understand why Beau thought I need to chill out before I did/said something stupid. We’ve talked about it and it was the completely right thing to do.

But people have used first names on this site in posts before without anyone giving a single crap. And you by definition can’t dox someone who has already shared all the info themselves. He shared his Twitter handle which was literally his name. His username he had for years was literally his name. And on and on… I think we all know why there was selective pearl clutching, but I’ll save my complete thoughts for a separate post.

Reading this thread, I need to clear the air on a LOT of stuff. I can't address everything without writing a novel. So I'm going to focus on what actually set this off, and then I'm outie for a bit.

We got on the topic of Koon because he made some out-of-line posts. And I tried appealing to him as a person to cut the crap, because people who know him real life have said he’s a solid dude. They say he’s a good guy who just acts different online. The idea that there is personal animus is just not true on any level. The only reason he wasn’t permabanned in 2015 for some serious rule breaking is that I lobbied to give him a second chance because a mutual acquaintance vouched for him. So instead he got a few months, and told to knock off the trolling, instigating, etc. I then lobbied to get him reinstated early. And I have the receipts for all of this.

I’m not going to rehash the posts from yesterday that everyone can go read and draw their own conclusions. Bottom line is that I didn’t expect people to resort to outright lies as a form trolling to score points. It was a mistake to start down the path addressing that misinformation head on, and ask if he wanted me to “prove it.” I’ll 100% own that my phrasing in that post was a fuck up. Once I saw how it was being received, I realized that. And I got about halfway through deleting the offending posts before Beau tried to nip it in the bud and deescalate the situation. Instead of that happening, Koon doubled down on some Alex Jones level conspiracy crap.

I seriously cannot believe he tried to convince people that the mods are reading people’s PMs (this is physically impossible!!! Even the all-powerful Jason Pham can’t do that) or sleuthing out people’s personal information or other nonsense. I mean what in the actual fuck? Trolling is one thing, but that isn’t funny or acceptable on every level. The only thing anyone has access to is your registration email. Period. It's really easy to show that he was absolutely full of it with basically everything he posted yesterday, but given that offering to "prove" stuff is exactly what set off this shit show I'm not touching that with a ten foot pole.

I’m not naïve enough to think this is the end of it. I’m sure Koon is relishing his new martyr role… there are many times when he has begged to be permabanned, so congrats on finally crossing enough lines to get your wish. I'd also put strong odds on Koon and loomis circumventing their bans, they’ve both admitted to stuff like that with bans in the past. Is what it is and there's nothing we can really do if he wants to stir up more shit.

I’ll close by saying we have to figure out a way to stop the toxic effect politics threads are having on our board. I've personally been really susceptible to this. The vast majority of conflicts are in those threads or because of spillover from those threads. It didn’t use to be anything close to this. Speaking personally, there are still a ton of people on both sides of the political spectrum doing things how they used to be done. Drayer, YJ, wizards, whiskey, etc. come to mind as people on the right I disagree with a lot but always keep it 100%; 41, Bluto, Oahu are guys on the left I can say the same about. Many other very smart posters too I’m not naming, and a lot of others that (usually) trend towards being productive. But there are also way too many fucking people treating this site like Twitter right now. Acting like the goal is to try to talk past someone or score points or whatever. We’ve lost a LOT of good posters due to our decision to lightly moderate and sequester the politics threads (RIP Cack), so that was maybe a mistake. It’s fitting that many of the same people who drove those people off hanged themselves yesterday by showing their true colors. The same people that are responsible for the bulk of reported posts and asking for other to be banned are the same ones who cry about mods "controlling the board." Ironic.

Yesterday was a wakeup call that putting any effort into engaging with people on this site who choose to post in bad faith is a waste of time, and that our “hands off” approach to moderating in order to avoid conflict/drama was a gross miscalculation. Not a single moderator here signed up for this site so that they could referee squabbles on some generic politics board.

I’ll be back for football season, I’m going to spend the rest of the weekend doing what I actually joined this site to do 10 years ago which is talk ND sports. No info hold back, if the rumor is wrong fuck it you’ll have forgotten in a few months. Also, reading some posts here about some long gone posters here also makes me nostalgic, so if people want to wax poetic about them or other big picture shit I’m game for that too.

Much Love,

IrishLax

PS. The only thing that actually surprised me was Irish2155. I know he has had his hand slapped a couple times by moderators, but I had no idea we had beef. Always thought he was a good poster.

Library common area is a highly underrated place to catch the game if you don’t want to fork out the coin for a ticket. Comfy chairs, not a lot of people know about it or do it.

We're runnin' older BB Code here. I don't know if the current code we're on allows for it, but a separate, hidden forum can be created and people can be granted access or access can be removed. A lot of the other football boards usually have something like this, a "NSFW" area if you will. BuckeyePlanet had one, and they used to have the same owner as IE back in the day (Not sure if that's still true). Surly Horns has one too and is running a much more up to date site/software with easy embedding of media. They were forced to make the switch after their old Shaggy Bevo/Texas site was taken in a court order a few years ago. I'd love to see IE update to that format, it's just super slick and integrates with other apps like Discord I guess.

First Koon was like, ‘yah’ and Lax was like, ‘nah’... then koon was like, ‘hell yah’ then Lax went like, ‘bitch I said hell to the nah’ then koon was like, ‘oh lord there’s fire, I ain’t got time for all that’. Then LAX called him by his first name.

And when all was said and done, Lax was like

I've said for a long time that no good really comes from most of the Politics threads. If you think about it pretty much every worthwhile poster that received a permaban has been as a result of that board. Some people just can't seem to keep their cool. Generally people can disagree in Irish related threads, but it never gets as heated, or as passionate, or as personal as Politics (Oddly enough, given that this is an Irish board). Same thing happens over at the Surly Texas board though (Although if you want a Liberal echo chamber, that is definitely the place to go. I thought Texas was Red?). There have certainly been some posters that have gotten hot after a bad loss, but I think a lot of them have been shorter bans. When it comes to Politics, some people just can't seem to back off.

Are there any circumstances where someone who's been perma'd would be allowed back? I can think of a few good posters who just had a bad day or bad week and acted out of character.

So wait why did Koon get perma banned?

Him and Lax had their slap fight. Lax threatened to (not really) dox him. Lax got a 24 hour cool down. And then...?
