Defensive backs seemed to have an awesome day. Ashton White surprised me a little bit. I knew he was physical but reports were that he was great in coverage. Good news on Vaughn as well because I assumed he wouldn't have the foot speed to stay at CB.

No news on Nyles Morgan is good news. What a great job he did in the off-season. After not knowing a single thing last year and getting stuck behind Joe, he sure made up some ground mentally.......

- Great news on the young DB's, it's pretty important that the staff hit on those evaluations and so far it sounds like they did.

- I like ESB and more importantly Sanders working with the 1's. Not sure it's necessarily that black and white right now but I hope he's our starting slot WR in the fall.

- Statistically, I expect Morgan to have a huge season. If he is asked to do what Schmidt was, I think his numbers could be pretty good. Not sure if that shows up in the W column for the defensive unit as a whole (might also give up some big plays) but it'll at least be fun to watch at times. He'll be making some plays.

In a way, I hope he does get beat sometimes, just like his freshman year. That means he's being aggressive and he'll shine on a lot of plays in the backfield. When he guesses wrong, it blows up part of the play forcing the ball carrier to make adjustments. Plus, if Max is good at anything it's cleaning up other people's mistakes.

They need to put him in heat seeker mode amap and let the Tranquil, Martini, Onuwalu andRedfield catch what gets by him.

Tiassum looked fit in ND Football's tweet earlier today.

Rochell said he had done a good job this offseason getting into shape.

Three interesting things I have heard about the start of camp :

Out of Brian Kelly's mouth - That we have to look at GPS movements and trim our numbers. The team did 23 periods at a fair clip, and he intimated that was beyond where he planned to be at this point. The head coach admitting that they worked the team too hard on the first day of practice!

Out of Brian Kelly's mouth : That on the first day without pads one position group they could see things from was the offensive line, because of the need for the five guys to work together. He also seemed to delight, just a little to repudiate those that criticized defensive line play, indicating that the offensive line was unique in this ability. And, the fact that Tommy Kramer could step in as a true freshman and not disrupt the timing and tempo speaks to the long term chances of him stepping in during the season as a starter.

The general number of reporters that could talk about timing and issues on the first day of practice with individuals and position groups, and the fact that no one could say that about the defensive backs. When is the last time that has happened with the Irish?

What I would like to see this year. We need to rotate guys on the DL and at DB 7-8 guys. If the staff is only gonna play someone once then sit him 3 games then redshirt him. Don't waste a year for a kid like they have done before. Freshman are gonna make mistakes. But these guys should all be getting important game
Time play it will
Only benefit down the road

Particularly after several video clips of 2-3 minutes in duration with most of the video showing footage in between actual plays and the several vids were actually mostly showing the same drills. I'm all in on this team too Bogs!

I actually am all in. Always in the beginning of the season-how can you not feel great about where things stand? Even after a shoe drop-and it'll happen, I'm still all in. :)

I wonder if this was due to things progressing better than expected for the first day?

I think he was making that distinction. He spoke to a few speedbumps between the transition between summer workouts and the first day of fall camp. I think that and the sheepish look on his face was enough for me to think the coaches went full potato on the players for the first practice.

Here is yesterday :

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/J_Ob-lOX4Kg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

What I noticed was :
  • Dexter Williams is really fast, a lot faster than I thought.
  • Chase Claypool is going to be a star! (Probably early on, too!)
  • What Mike McGlinchey did to Isaac Rochell was brutal. In watching this, I have never seen anything like that happen to Isaac before. And I think Isaac is going to be one of the best in the nation this year. Remember two years ago, what Rochell did to (Stanford) Peat! Oh my, is McGlinchey a mountain with an attitude!
  • The same is true for Nelson, maybe even more so!

After reading the article and watching the tape again, I agree with the author on the fact that the McG-Rochell matchup. Yes it was a win for Rochell because Mike did hold him. I don't know if that would be called often or not. But as far as brutal stand 'em up, and bend 'em back power, Mike forced his will on Isaac. Both are really strong. But Mike is at a whole new level!

Bogs, I really don't see what was so shocking about what McGlinchey did to Rochell. Rochell tried to get the edge and McGlinchey rode him high. Fairly normal rep. Decent rep by McGlinchey, but I don't see anything out of the ordinary there.

- I'm with you on Dexter, he needs to get more touches. With Folston and Adams I realize this will be hard to do but I think he's electric. I've also noticed he's willing to get the tough yards, coaches have also said as much. Hopefully he gets a fair amount of work.

Big Q reported to camp at 312? wow, dude got in phenomenal shape.

Q's body fat rate has to be as low as D Hayes'. He has been the poster boy for body reshaping this year. But Quenton is built, much lower body fat and bigger. I don't believe he was down to 312.

Posted in his thread at the end of May. So this is before summer conditioning :

I don't think what McGlinchey did was special in itself. But I do think it was special because it was against Rochell. I've seen Isaac go against some really good tackles, and I have never seen any tackle come close to doing this to him. And you have seen the 'play' against Peat, but did you watch the whole game? Rochell is a beast that doesn't ever give up any part of leverage, or stand up, for that matter.

And Mike is really long. So the strength it took was amazing to me.

312 hey? Wow. He looks in phenomenal shape in practise videos. His shoulders are crazy wide. I would not want to run into him in a pulling situation. No sir.

Whoa Bogs, slow down here.

1. Mike didn't stand him up, he just rode him high. There was no really no leverage lost. They are trying to get Isaac to turn corners and there was no bull rush involved, like he did to Peat. Yes, I watched that game and Rochell stoned Peat. However, he also wasn't able to beat Peat around the edge much either, which is what he was trying to do on this rep to McGlinchey

2. I love Rochell and what he brings to the table, but he actually gets beat quite a bit when he tries to get the edge. He's just not that guy and he doesn't have that speed/quickness. That's why he has 3.5 sacks in 25 games started. In fact, a lot of OT's beat Rochell when he tries to get the edge. Rochell is a 5T or 3T, he's out of position at SDE. So this shouldn't come as a surprise. What I'd rather see is McGlinchey going up against some true WDE's that are seasoned and athletic. I'd like to see that foot speed on display.

I've been there, too. Number 5 seemed like such a sure bet with Manti and Golson... then a few months later one was in the most bizarre scandal of all time and the other was kicked out of school.

And the other #5 apparently couldn't beat out Joe Schmidt. :banghead2
