Question - what would the Computers say in 1993 and did you support FSU :)

Sagarin's model liked FSU better in 1993; by how much, I'm not sure. His archived ratings don't go back that far.

When you're talking about two teams with identical records vying for a spot in a title game, head-to-head results should obviously be weighed heavily. But I don't think "W/L Record + head-to-head tiebreakers" is a good algorithm either. For instance, FSU's single loss (to ND) was far less embarrassing than ND's (to a 9-3 BC squad).

Regardless, it wasn't Sagarin's model who sent us to the Cotton Bowl that year. It was the pollsters. ND and FSU were clearly the two best teams that year, and should have rematched for the title.

You're absolutely right. It should be more nuanced than that. I was just throwing out an example.

Agree, those should definitely not be the only factors, but I do believe the should be heavily weighted. The formula would need to be complex of course, taking into account SoS, home record, away record, SoConf (to a small extent), etc..

What would make me happy is if we had a close loss to FSU, and FSU had a bad loss of some type, and ND makes the 4 team playoff with FSU the odd man out at #5. Would be beautiful.

Every year it is the same debate. The funny thing is, if you win you're in. Period point blank. (talking Big 5)

12-0 and we're in the playoffs...

Unless you're Bama... Then you get to take advantage of a really biased system such that you don't even have to win your division.

If we take care of business we should be in the playoffs. I can see an undefeated team from a power conference getting the shaft in favor for 2 SEC teams being in the playoffs though.

LSU is #18!!? WTF!! WHere is T-Town to chime in on this? Can you really justify that LSU lost to unranked Miss St who hasn't done shit, should be #18??

FUcking ridiculous!

Coaches Poll Top 25 (ND #17)

Normally I would agree but LSU did beat Wisconsin on a neutral field so IMO they deserve to be ranked. I don't know that Miss St is deserving of 14 but they are a team people already thought was pretty good and they just won in Death Valley. Even if I grant that they should be a little lower, name me 20 teams who are better and/or have more impressive wins this early in the year.

Step back a little. ND is #8 and there are a lot of people, justifiably, bitching about that. It's week 4 y'all, and these polls mean exactly as much as my poll. ;)

That's an improvement from last week where Marshall was in the 20s and we weren't ranked.

Yeah, I know. But still bullshit. I personally thing the #8 ranking is too high until we beat a good team, but I can understand it more than #23! Guh.

Agreed. I think 5-12 are pretty much interchangeable at this point in the season with 1-4 being on a higher tier. 23 though, way too low for us right now.

We should feel fortunate with #8. Our resume is only slightly better than Utah's and they have the 31st most points in the AP and 38th most in the USAT polls. (3-0 while crushing Idaho St and Fresno St at home, and beating Michigan on the road).

My poll is
#1 - all SEC West teams
#2 - all SEC East teams
#3 - Oklahoma
#4 - Indiana
#5 - Temple
#6 to 25 - n/a; no one else has proved they can compete with the SEC.

My poll may not be much, but it feels really good when I do it right:)

Drew Sharp's of the CFB world are going to exist from here on out.. as long as we stay "Ind" and not affiliate ourselves with the biG5 we're just gonna have to win and let em suck on It a lil longer..

now for the meaty part.. SCUM would lose and do it proudly to hurt us #narcissism

Miss State getting ranked that high is a bit of a stretch IMO. But do not discount them going in to Death Valley on a Saturday night and owning LSU for 3 1/2 quarters. I don't care if Les was coaching the local high school team... that is very hard to do. Very impressive win for the Dogs. They just have to do it again and again.

And a lot of people are saying the same thing about the Irish sitting at #8 right now. Notre Dame's signature win thus far is against an awful Michigan team. Give it time D-BOE... too early to worry about who is ranked where.

LSU at #18 is a stretch as well. Can't lose to a team on your own turf. He has the talent... they just need to figure some things out. Still, I think LSU will struggle as the rest of the SEC West seems to have improved while his Tigers have not. I think this is the year we see if Les can really coach - which the jury is still out on. Gonna take more than his talent this time. But in fairness to Les, he has lost so much of that talent the last three years. Hard to reload... even if you are LSU.

I agree with what T Town is saying, but I think Les loses so much talent because of the way he markets his program in recruiting, and maybe just the type of person/coach he is (i.e. player first). On the flip side, I think guys want to leave because they don't feel they are being developed or they don't see a clear plan to winning a championship. Either way it has a lot to do with the culture within the program.

To another point you made, I think the reason so many Irish fans are exceptionally high on our team this year is because although our opponents may not have been elite, we have played virtually turnover free, with few penalties, and few major breakdowns on D. This does not mean we are ready to take down the best teams, but as you look around the country, even at the powerhouse teams there is a lot of winning despite yourself, and losing because of yourself. $0.02.

Sums it up pretty well. By the end of the season you will see the losing SEC team actually go up in the polls.
