'10 IL QB Tommy Rees (Notre Dame Man)

Daniels has a 40+ inch vertical... he can "go up and get it."

Niklas has a Herculean body --- he doesn't have to; his mere presence walls off a car's parking space worth of "window".

TJJones is amazingly the most underrated player by all sorts of IE posters who absolutely refuse to notice that he is a superb receiver and increasingly tough competitor at the point of ball arrival.

Plus, Kelly's offense is SUPPOSED to be largely "darts" in gaps not fades in the corner. If Tommy can read it, we should see the darts to a big receiver walling off the defender like Eifert was the consummate genius at body-positioning last year. Everett was not so good at the darts-offense since he wasn't seeing it as well as Tommy theoretically should.

Let's see what our highly admirable gym rat can do in his greybeard year.

You forgot Corey going up, and as a prescription to red zone ills.

Those darts in the gaps need to be on time as well, not behind the receiver. Hopefully he can get that together this year, and we will have a successful offense.

Dear God,
Please let me see the hurry up offense work this year.

Sure. I hope there's many a touchdown in that young man's future. But he's going to need a little time to develop.

Another gut feeling, I don't think as long as most people think. Anyone been tracking his weight since spring?

“@NDatRivals: No surprise Tommy Rees didn't make the O'Brien Watch List, even though he's got more career passing TD's than 18 of the 34 QB's who did.”

Tommy is going to be just fine. He's our guy, he's got my support, theres no one better to lead the team this year. We won't have to throw the ball as much as we had to Tommy's Sophomore year. Our OL is improved and our running game will take the pressure off him. As far as the loss of Eifert and Floyd, we'll be fine. I have a feeling Niklas, Daniels, and TJ will all have good years and provide good targets. Theres no reason Tommy can't take us to a decent BCS game and give us a shot as a senior now with this defense and the pieces around him..

Sorry not buying it. By this reasoning Vinny Testaverde was a better NFL quarterback than Montana because he threw 2 more career touchdown passes.

The game has changed and comparing a current quarterback to one from 35 years ago is not so simple.

Expecting the pressure to be off of Tommy because of our dynamic run game seems WAY over the top to me.

What kind of run game we have in 2013 is total speculation. We are replacing two interior line spots, important spots for the run attack. It will take time for that OLINE to jell. We are eliminating the QB as a running option due to the switch to REES. And we are Totally rebuilding the backfield .

Our current stable of running backs , as great as the potential of the frosh is, nonetheless we currently have UNDER 500 YARDS of rushing , and that's the CAREER TOTALS of the entire roster of backs.

Since it is VERY LIKELY every running back will also have to face 8 in the box built to STOP our run game, and without worry of a mobile QB, IMO its best to wait until game 4 or 5 to evaluate this seasons run game.

if Kelly and Rees can't come up with a plan of attack for the "8 in the box" routine after 4 years then we are in trouble.

however, Kelly is too good of a coach and Tommy is too smart and experienced to not be able to handle it.

My guess is Kelly and Tommy have done nothing but work on and plan against teams doing that to us and are licking their chops.

We've got to throw on 1st down a bunch if we're going to be better than 8-4 IMO. Can't let teams stack the box and get us in 2nd and long all the time.

I was never a big Tommy fan, but I am strangely comfortable and confident rolling into this year knowing he is the man. I think he is going to have a good year, and my bold prediction for this season is that our offense will be more productive than it was last year.

I felt the same way. Then I watched a YouTube video of his highlights. Now I'm terrified.

Anyone got a video of all Tommy career snaps? Or just '13?

I'm strangely optimistic as well. He will be a great game manager. I just hope he can limit mistakes. I'm really rooting for him, not just because I want our team to win, but because he has done nothing but play his role and support this team through the ups and downs.

Pre-season optimism is expected, things are fresh, we are on a 12 game regular season win streak, we are so far " undefeated " for 2013, its all good.

Unfortunately I expect that optimism to fade over the first few games.

We spent TWO FULL SPRINGS, and last years season designing an offense for EG---varied launch points, read option, option, deep throws, and some nifty play action and adding up-tempo for 2013.

All that is gone now, we are offensively going to be DELIBERATE, conservative, & generally cautious. We are going to TRY and run the ball , throw short , and essentially run the REES offense that has been glaringly INEFFECTIVE. In Tommy's last four big playing time games FSU, STANFORD, MICHIGAN & BYU----our offensive production in those last four MAJOR appearances by tommy have been ANEMIC at best . And to make things worse we are replacing our backfield and our AA TE. I would list the stats for those four games but they are too depressing. And this post is downbeat enough.

If I am honest with myself its very hard to expect much exciting or very productive from this years offense, ( I do expect the 2014 offense to turn the corner and be the best one since Kelly arrived) but that's a year away.

Tommy threw a pick in every 29 passes last season---in 2011 tommy threw a pick every 29 passes--no change---Tommy has been throwing picks since HS and to expect his final year to be the big change is not totally realistic in my view.

By comparison EG threw a pick every 60 throws and that's including the back to back picks against Michigan and all his early struggles last season. And it was his FIRST season.

New RBs, new interior line, loss of the entire backfield and Tommy's favorite target our AA TE gone. Tommy has NO established go to receiver , he has to develop that through trial and error during the season.

IMHO if we can go 9-3 during the year and have a legit shot at 10 wins in a bowl game, this season may have maxed out its potential.

Time will tell , but I fear offensive problems will make this a very up & down season.

But then my wife tells me I am wrong regularly , so hopefully my analysis is not as sound as I think!

Not to burst your bubble, but the Irish are 0-1 in 2013. Sorry, Brah.

This is how I feel. I think we'll win get to at least 10 wins and will average more points than last year. My main concern is how Rees will respond when he throw that first big INT or two and if the play calling will tighten up too much due to it. I just don't see us winning as many games as we could if we just try and rely on the run game and the D (see BYU game last year-small sample size I know) to get us through the year. We have to let Rees sling it if we're going back to the BCS.

Those are all things we talk about in the spring and summer but how often did we really do it? With the exception of play action and varied launch points, not much IMO. We occasionally did read option, threw deep, and went up tempo but not enough where it was really a part of our offense anyways.

If it was ever going to happen, the time is now. We've got the smartest quarterback in terms of playbook under center. Go up tempo. I can see this working.

Yes. Tommy will be great. He will have improved drastically. He will be helped out by our running game. Every game will not look like the BYU game last year, thats for sure. By the end of this year we will all be like "Everett who?" as Tommy rides off into the sunset with a BCS trophy and an escort from the SBPD.

im still shocked how here we are this far into the Kelly regime and while on offense (no matter what qb is in there) we still see the ND QB staring over at the sideline in between every play sometimes for a good 10-15 seconds waiting for a play.
its maddening to me.
get the damn play in already coach!
up tempo my ***.
maybe martin taking over play call will help this year.
Go Irish!

Martin calling plays worries me 1,000x more than Tommy executing. We will see the Tommy of 2013 and he will be a stud, I just hope the stage is not too big for Mr. Martin.

I would like to see Tommy improve on his progressions, specifically after he cycles thru each read, and comes back to the first option. When he 'comes back' to the first option, for whatever reason, he has trouble seeing the LB/CB on that option, and is prone to throw an INT right into the chest of the defender. If he can curtail those INTs, it will be a significant improvement....maybe he can also learn that sometimes, taking a sack is the best option. with his knowledge of the game, and his experience I am optimistic that he will make those improvements.

I expect Rees to be good not great. I also expect him to be a Captain along with Zach Martin and to run out of the tunnel for the BYU game to a great applause and ovation from the fans.

CAN'T miss QB two classes in a row. Last year when we missed we said "wait until next year." Next year is not guaranteed. We need one at least.

What happens if Clausen leaves after this year, then crist gets hurt?

Then this board goes into meltdown mode on "why didn't we take another QB?"

Strangely prophetic from the first page of this thread haha. We ended up taking Rees and Hendrix, which was the debate, and Clausen DID leave, and Crist DID get hurt. Funny to look back at stuff like that.
