They now have 7 commits and are ranked #71 on rivals and #75 on 247. WOOF

and THIS is where the program really hits hard times... Sorry Tommy Trojan... just when you thought you were out, a poor recruiting class pulls you back in...

I love to see their recruiting suffer, but they will get an insta-bump whenever they hire a new coach. I don't think it's likely that their class ends up "bad."

It depends on when the hire comes. If Haden waits until after the season, SC's new coach will only have a couple months to recruit. Even then, they'll surely pick up a few talented guys late in the cycle, but it may be too late to really salvage the class.

Maybe I'm underestimating how bad their class already is, but I could see them announcing a new HC the day after the regular season is over. I feel that would be enough time for the usual "new direction" bump as well as salvaging a few of the Cali studs based on the USC name.

My concern with the new coach is that the recruits who jump to a program with a new coach usually decommit from another program to do so. I'd hate for us to have some of those California guys in the fold just to lose them in the last month or 2 before NSD and have no real contingency plan.

Sure, they'll probably get a few. But that won't be nearly enough to salvage the class.

I'm not worried about it. We might lose one, but I have a hard time seeing SC's new coach successfully raiding our class. As Walter White would say, we are the ones who knock.

Could be. Since some recruits clearly saw the writing on the wall with Kiffin, and looked in other directions. Maybe some want to look back at USC.

We may also see that the new coach has virtually no staff (they may have one carryover), as assistants will also be looking as they are unlikely to be retained. The coach will likely have a difficult time pulling his staff before bowl games end, so may only get his staff together by the end of the year - right in time for a dead period in recruiting. It typically seems hard for a new coach to do much more than salvage a class when hired during the post-season. OSU/Urban had the advantage of a huge head start on the recruiting trail - and the fact that Urb barnstormed a bunch of schools during that earlier spring and probably snuck into the war-rooms to view the recruiting boards when he was pretending he had to take a leak.

The main chance that they have is if they hire a "home run" coach in December, then they have two full months pull all the homegrown talent that they can... and there is a lot of it. Most of it is deciding very late in the cycle, won't be committed, and likes USC as a destination.

Their national recruiting prospects are slim at this point. And on top of that, their main issue will be if UCLA finishes with a good season and is able to grab a large chunk of Cali talent.

If they sign a small class without a large number of marquee players then -- coupled with their 2013 class -- they could be in a lot of trouble. If you think depth is bad this year, after a large chunk of their defense goes pro and Lee leaves (I really can't see him sticking around...) they could be scary thin across the board.

Wow... have you guys heard about what happened with Wyche? Insane how much this kid has gone through. Have to think Miami maybe isn't the best school for him if it's run anything like The U of old... but I'll be pulling for him for sure and hope he stays on the straight 'n narrow.

What happened with Wyche?

I watched this story about him a few months ago. I hope things work out for him.

They have nor receivers, running backs, defensive backs, or quarterbacks in their current class. All offensive linemen and front 7 guys, and none of them are elite.

Well it looks like the guys who committed right after Lane was fired will get their scholarships honored by the new staff. They won't be able to fill out a full class without those guys.

Yeah because he probably shows up at the school and rips his shirt off. Those guys commit just to get him to leave.

every one of their current '14 commits are from southern california. Seems like USC is no longer a national power. They will probably have to load up on JUCO's for the next few seasons.

Yeah, that's not even close to being true. They are putting a premium on local recruiting right now, as Kiffin paid too much attention to the naional recruits and burned some bridges in SoCal. But if they hire the right coach, USC will be a national power again, no doubt about it.

And they will kill locally, as the USC name in football is still king, so JUCO's will not be nearly as needed as one may think...

LA... one question I've always had... how much is the rise of UCLA a threat to USC? Like if UCLA starts going on a run is it going to be an even recruiting matchup in Los Angeles? No doubt USC as a football power has more name recognition nationwide, but I've always wondered in So Cal how the two schools are viewed.

my two cents--- I'm sure this is true anywhere but it seems especially so in So Cal... the kids are vey fairweather.. if UCLA wins the Rose Bowl this year and SC doesn't make a bowl game alot of the So Cal bluechips will trend UCLA's way pretty quickly... SC will always get their kids from say, a LB Poly, but if UCLA keeps winning they'll go toe to toe with SC locally with ease... So it's clearly a threat... but it's also not like the area can't accomodate multiple programs either...

USC has lost its handle on local recruiting to an extent; in the past they completely clean up on Cali kids. Now you see schools like ucla, washington, stanford, and oregon grabbing up these players. Once they get the right coach in there, Usc will get alot of those future cali recruits, and you will see the backlash in those other schools. USC's plan has always been to lock down cali, and then go after 'big fish' nationally. Even if they dont get the national kids, they can still doing extremely well with Cali talent. Texas, and Florida schools operate in a similar fashion (lock-down their state, and then get the national recruits).

As far as UCLA, they might go thru times where they get more recruits and do well, but they will never unseat USC. As I said, there might be fluctuations every few years, but UCLA will always take a back seat to USC. I don't have any ill will towards UCLA, its just the natural order of things
