surprised there is not more commentary here on IE in regards to the stadium expansion.

perhaps thats because there will be so few changes made other than those outside and added to the existing stadium structure?

i think ND may have tried a little too hard to preserve (read: make zero to no changes to) the existing "game day once in the stadium watching the game experience" to preserve tradition when they could have/shoould used this to do so much more.

to me its not a "stadium renovation" (inside it)as much as it is adding bunch of facilities that happen to be attached to the stadium.

Some expert information on the whole field turf vs. grass debate that doesn't have to do with tradition:

Grassman: An Expert Weighs In

If they are going to keep the natural surface and fix the drainage, there is only one person they can call, Roger Bossard, aka The Sodfather. His drainage system is used in every new baseball park that is grass and has redone many other parks as well. He isn't cheap, but he is the authority. My Sox are lucky to have him and his family maintaining Sox park for years.

From the article, the bottom line on turf (for me, at least):

“Field turf gives you a consistent playing condition day in and day out regardless of the weather.”

couple questions/thoughts:

i assume they are going to install actual SEATS (rip out the planks) with the $400M?

dont think for one minute the "grey hairs" are just going to hand over their "gold seats and lower planks" and run up to the new boxes, so others can fill the lower seats and liven up the crowd down low. those tix are VERY important and have been passed down thru MULTIPLE generations of ND families. no, these new boxes will be sold before the first game--to the highest bidder. bank on that.

i love ND and always will but for $400M i expected more changes to the stadium. GC needs no/or minimal structural changes to old interior rockne/new stadium structures....essentially just bolting on to exsiting east side, taking out old press box and bolting on to west side.
ND is overpaying for what they are actually getting IMO. it should cost a lot...but $400M???

Considering the size of the facilities "buildings" at each end of the stadium I think they are on par with other buildings constructed on campus. From a cost per additional seat I see what you are saying but this is much more than that.

I also don't think the blue hairs will care one bit to hide in a box rather than freeze on the sidelines. They are still mid field and the box has cache to it. Look at any other stadium, boxes cost more than sideline seats, even if the box isn't mid field. Once they get a taste of the creature comforts they will be fighting over the limited luxury seating.

I work as a Sales Manager at a developer and just had the blueprints hit my desk for the new Stadium renovation - Campus Crossroads project. The actual detail of what they will be doing to the stadium is very impressive and a pretty huge project. Anyones interested I can send you access to the prints! PM me.

I've had some issues with some of the changes to gameday and the stadium. But overall it's fine. The one thing I want left the same is the viewing of Touchdown Jesus. It adds to the mystique to the gameday experience in the stadium and if obstructed Our Lord won't be able to see the game from Hesburgh Library!

They won't be blocking that.

You sure it doesn't say "confidential" on the blueprints?

That's just a mural dude. Everyone knows that Real Jesus watches ND games from the gold seats.

Has anyone been to the bookstore recently and noticed if they've started selling the helmets with the new nose bumpers? I want to get a full-sized one for my desk but I'd hate to spend that kind of money on something that's outdated before I even get it.
