Big changes possibly afoot for Notre Dame

A little birdie from South Bend, who I happen to trust, checked in last night with some interesting news about potentially big doings in the land of the golden dome. Here’s what the birdie had to say:

"I don’t have all the details yet, but it appears that Notre Dame will announce major renovations and changes to Notre Dame Stadium. In May, the University officially announced a study into the feasibility of creating a multi-use stadium facility. The results of the study and the next steps will apparently be announced next month. My contacts who’ve seen some of the possibilities are very impressed. It appears that the stadium will add field turf, a jumbotron of some type, and some luxury seating and student-use areas beyond football.

The Notre Dame old guard are losing their minds over the possibility of a jumbotron and plastic field. The school permanently destroyed the stadium in 1996-97, when they built the modified version around the historic stadium. The modified version is trashy modern and really doesn’t represent the university well. They need to get this right, or else they will lose a ton of support forever.

Also: Notre Dame signed a 10-year deal with Adidas in 2005, and rumors are rampant that school officials met with Adidas on Tuesday to tell them that the university will not be continuing the relationship. I have not confirmed if that means immediate termination or non-renewal. Nike is mentioned as the likely replacement."

None of this is confirmed yet, so take that for what it’s worth.

Love everything about this.

Sorry. Personally I feel too many things are combined with other threads here. Hard for people like me to check all the separate forums and keep up when things get buried. Would be easier to follow player news if it wasn't posted in their old recruiting threads from years ago, or stadium and turf news in a thread that was posted awhile ago as well.

I usually disagree, but this is a great example of this. This news is a unique event deserving of it's own thread... it shouldn't get buried in a catch all field turf thread.

I would love to see the shamrock series uniforms under Nike. It would be taken to a whole new level of awesomeness.

LMAO... I swear this freaking fan base sometimes... talk about sweating the wrong stuff... hopefully it will drive those types away... for good.

I fail to see whats "trashy modern" about that last stadium renovation. If anything they did a great job of keeping the integrity of the old stadium. If you want to see trashy modern you have to go no further than soldier field

Not liking the idea of Nike being the new supplier at all.

They'll find a way to screw up the jerseys with some BS "flywire" technology. (see the USA hockey Olympic jerseys.) I don't even want to think what they'll do with Shamrock jerseys.

Nike part may be incorrect. But Nike is a lot better than adidas. The gear for the team and fans would be a better product and thats not including game equipment/gear. I dont think Nike is coming to South Bend but im not opposed!

So has Nike stopped using child labor or do we just not care anymore?

They are the ultimate status symbols for sports stars and street-conscious young people. With their trademark three stripes, Adidas clothes cost a small fortune to buy and are promoted by world-famous names such as England skipper David Beckham, Olympic heptathlete Denise Lewis and Russian tennis player Anna Kournikova.
But the company will this week become embroiled in controversy when the European Parliament hears of the barbaric treatment of employees in Indonesian sweatshop factories supplying the German conglomerate.

The Parliament will be told that clothes for Adidas were made in two factories using child labour, forced overtime and sexual harassment. Representatives of workers in two Indonesian factories supplying the German company,will tell Euro MPs that in the Nikomax Gemilang and Tuntex factories, in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, children as young as 15 were:

• made to work 15-hour days;

• expected to do at least 70 hours a week and punished for refusing to do overtime;

• paid less than $60 a month, rates below the International Labour Organisation's demand for a living wage;

• penalised for taking leave during medical difficulties and had illegal deductions taken from wages as punishments for minor misdemeanours.

Not sure they will be better or have a better wow factor. This years where great IMO. The only problem with last years was the split design on the helmet. The throwbacks worn at UM a couple of years ago were sweet.

I'd like to know where they got the info on the old guard. Most understand the need for change and how it will help recruiting. The old guard likes to win as much as the young guard.

I did come across a pic I took a few years back. It showed the field, the skyline, the stripes in the EZ and the simple scoreboard. Without realizing it, I found myself staring at that pic. Then I realized how beautiful it was in its simplistic nature. They can add field turf and a jumbotron and I get what that does, but it will never be the same.

The child-labor stuff wasn't funny but lmao at this paragraph.

There's nothing that "street-conscious young people" love more than soccer coaches, tennis players, and heptathletes. Wtf? The only people I know that like adidas are the Brazilian tourists who invade the Orlando outlet malls every summer. Those soccer kids loooooove them some adidas.

Yes, and Adidas only hires those 18 y/o or older and insure they only work 8 hour days 5 days a week in AC comfort. Unless you don't own a single swoosh, I would consider you casting a stone from the front lawn of a glass house.

Really doesn't make any sense at all... I haven't heard 1 negative word about the stadium renovation from anyone ever. And it sure as hell is the opposite direction of "trashy"....

Was he actually SAYING that or was he mocking the "Notre Dame old guard"?

You can negative rep me, do whatever you gotta do or say, But if you are in favor of Adidas over Nike or even Under Armour. You are an idiot.. Simple, as that. Adidas isnt even in the same ballpark as the other 2. Having Nike would help in so many different ways..

Adidas died to me when Michigan was given special status. When that happened I hoped we would move.

I feel exactly the opposite way. I will die a little inside if Nike takes over for ND.

I would seriously have to stock up on gear, I can't bring myself to wear any of their trash. You look like every other dipshit with that momo swoosh. (Especially here living in Oregon)

I've just been thinking about all the possible stadium upgrades, field turf changes, etc. Could this be a way to change the atmosphere at ND stadium forver? As a whole we are not a very intimidating place to play. Could the upgrades to the stadium drive out some of the older generation that don't agree with the changes and give the younger generations an opportunity to fill their seats thus making ND a much more intimidating place for our competition to play?

Is there a benefit to recruiting?

Thoughts?
