Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick Discusses Stadium Enhancements

From the interview:
-Playing surface to be addressed independent of stadium renovation... they're either digging up everything all the way down to the sub-soil and going natural grass, or they're going synthetic. They will not use a combo like Green Bay.
-January meeting with BoT to discuss what they've come up with, after that they will begin fundraising for it.

Personally I think this is Jack getting us one step closer to a public announcement of Field Turf. I think it is necessary to make it look as though real grass is still being considered for all the hard core traditionalist out there.

I don't see why they can't go with a Combo like GB. It seems like most people prefer that.

Why not the synthetic? Will it not hold up as well?

A few things as an old timer:

1) It saddens me that the campus has grown around the stadium and thus adds an emphasis on football as the center of life at ND.

2) Expansion of the stadium, if it's to happen, should not increase its "footprint" and perhaps involve a design that helps to "capture" and even amplify crowd noise.

3) Examine, study and investigate the system in use for the Twins' stadium in Minneapolis which allows for natural, "real" turf by warming the subsoil.

4) The choice of jumbotron or not I cede to those who stand a better chance than I to be alive in 20 years.

5) Stay classy, ND.

Well, didn't football build Notre Dame? I mean let's be honest, where would Notre Dame be if not for Rockne and others launching the university to national fame? It probably resembles Dayton, Xavier, or any of the myriad Catholic universities in the midwest, no? Would the university have survived World War II if not for football?

Furthermore aren't some of these issues mitigated by building classrooms and such into the building? What is more Notre Dame than simultaneously excelling in both athletics and academics ?

I'm not sure I agree that campus has grown such that the stadium is the center or even principally involved with campus life. When I was a student, I would generally only walk by the stadium if I was going from Debartolo to Jordan or out to that parking lot. I'm with you in principle dshans, but I'm just not certain if I concur with your assertion here.

The point of the stadium renovation is to make it the center of campus. The point is to shift the focus of campus life toward the stadium. This info comes from on high

Limited land to work with makes campus extending towards and around the football stadium inevitable, but even then it is still hardly at the center of campus. As a student I can confidently say that the football stadium is nowhere near the center of campus. On a normal day I typically won't be within 200 yards of it.

On one side of the stadium is most of campus, and on the other side is all the practice fields and the JACC. If anything, the stadium is the border between the academics and athletics sides of campus.

the twins system would probably be impossible as they use a large state of the art waste removal system across the street to provide that heat.

Per Swarbrick, the new field will be ready for next season. Don't know if that was already announced.

Are there five of this thread or do they just keep changing names?

Just follow the hand. Don't look at the keyboard. Let me introduce you to my lovely, voluptuous and scantily clad assistant, Lola.

Well, she walks like a woman and talks like a man ...

I like Warrior very much. They don't do Football stuff though.

It goes without saying that I freaking love Warrior.

To be honest, I love Under Armour gear too... far more than Nike. They make great stuff. I just don't know how I feel about them doing our Shamrock Series jerseys, etc.

I wouldn't care if we did the Shamrock Series anymore in general.

Lax, isn't Warrior owned by New Balance? I know NB doesn't have that "it" factor, but I've always loved their shoes and products. Sorry for getting off point, I know it's not even a consideration.

I assume you're talking about the uniforms. I love the series itself.

We have one of the most iconic uniforms in all of sports. Shouldn't we show that off in our biggest games?

It is. I think if they would decide to attack the American football market, they would make fantastic gear. NB is awesome, and so is warrior. They would have to do like they did in soccer. Sponsor a few high level teams and see what happens. ND would be the perfect experiment.

Won't happen, but it would be cool.
