Silly Season 2015/2016 (Coaching Changes)

The previous WKU coaches didn't make the huge jump to blue blood did they? Is this more of a 2 years then jump to mid-P5 school and then be a hot coaching candidate?

He'll get a big boy job next if he has success at WKU. We'll see him take over for Clay Helton. Obviously that's a long shot simply due to the field, but wouldn't surprise me one bit. He doesn't need to mess around with 2 HC gigs at a less than top 15 school.

Next season if first year that WKU does not play a Bama or LSU type team. Next year they play Illinois, Vandy, Ball St, Eastern KY, and CUSA slate. Legit shot that WKU goes undefeated next year. Not sure Sanford can jump from WKU to ND but he is in a great position to succeed at WKU.

There's no doubt in my mind that Mike Sanford will be the HC of ND or Stanford someday. It's in the stars.

Can't wait for him and his Hilltoppers to put the smackdown on Beau and his beloved Cardinals. Next year's game is the same week as Grandma's birthday so I'll be nearby. Date circled.

8 quotes from Mike Sanford's presser at Western Kentucky
Chris Vannini on Wednesday December 14, 2016

- His offensive style will be a lot of everything.

"On offense, there’s going to be times we line up in 5-wide receiver sets. The next snap, we might have 7 offensive linemen on the field. That’s what we want to do. We want to be difficult to prepare for. We want to be sound and simple and allow young players to play. I believe that’s all possible, and I’ve seen it done."

Sounds familiar

- Sanford plans to be very involved in the offense.

I’m going to hire an offensive coordinator and want to groom that offensive coordinator to call plays. However, I’ll want to be very involved with that process. I’ll also want to be very involved with the position group. That’s something I have a passion for and have had success with people who have played that position. The offensive itself is going to be up-tempo. There’s going to be a pace to what we do. It’s going to be multiple, use various personnel groups.”
Again sounding familiar

On special teams, the best players are going to play. It’s going to be an honor to play special teams. It’s not going to be just something you have to do. We’re going to play fast and furious.”

THAT doesn't sound so familiar.

Jeff Jacobs: UConn AD Benedict Reverses Field, Decides Diaco Has To Go - Hartford Courant
Jeff Jacobs

After a horrendous season Diaco was not going to be fired according to the AD, David Benedict. A month later he's gone but not yet, not until January 2nd.

Curious until you look at the buyout schedule, Diaco was due $5 million in '16 but only $3.4 in '17. Nice savings for the Athletic Department budget ... unless you consider that Jacobs tore up Diaco's prior contract only 7 months ago. The numbers reported last May are consideralby lower than the numbers in the Jacobs article.

Diaco agrees to two-year contract extension at UConn

I suspect part of the heat is Diaco or his agent pushing for higher numbers last May due to the disparity between Ollie's UCON MBB coach's $15 million package and Auriemma's $11 million package. BUT the announcement of Diaco's departure came a couple of days AFTER the state legislature lopped $46 million of the University's budget as the state is dealing with a nearly $1 Billion deficit. Was it Benedict or a state legislature muscle squeezingdown?

OR was it a basic control issue. Diaco supposedly was told to find an effective Offensive Coordinator from "outside his circle". Jacobs offered:

When UConn announced a search for yet another new offensive coordinator at the end of the season, I wondered aloud if Diaco's ego would allow him to handle a bigger, more experienced name. Would Diaco be able to handle somebody outside his circle getting showered with credit?

Apparently Diaco had a shot at Jerry Krill, said, no thank you, and Krill signed as OC with Rutgers.

My experience thinks the OC hiring was the straw that broke the back ala Holtz and Wordsworth, control!

Sounds familiar doesn't it. But I digress.

And then there is Recruiting.

Under the previous HC, T.J. Weist UCON was ranked:
'12 70
'13 64

Under Weist/Diaco joint class
'14 110

Under Diaco
'15 100
'16 103
'17 104 and counting

Why the hell did he get an extension?

SOURCE: Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock expected to be the next offensive coordinator at Cincinnati.

Opening the door for Jeff Quinn's promotion from assistant strength and conditioning post.

U of Cincinnati déjà vu?

Jeff Quinn is in his second year in 2016 with the Notre Dame football program and first as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.

Quinn, who served as Notre Dame's offensive analyst in 2015, enters his 33rd year of college coaching. He has produced NCAA, conference and school record-breaking offenses along with winning multiple conference, bowl and national championships.

...

Quinn had three of his players selected in the National Football League draft, including linebacker Khalil Mack who was chosen fifth overall by the Oakland Raiders in 2014. Mack was the highest NFL Draft pick in school history and the highest defensive player ever selected from the Mid-American Conference. Quinn’s teams also performed well in the classroom. Buffalo recorded the best overall GPA and APR ranking in program history during his tenure.

As offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Cincinnati (2007-2009), Quinn helped the Bearcats to a 12-0 regular-season record in 2009 and served as interim head coach for the Sugar Bowl meeting with defending national champion Florida.

Quinn was named a finalist for the 2009 Broyles Award, which is given to the nation’s top assistant coach. Unranked in preseason polls, Cincinnati’s undefeated regular season catapulted the Bearcats to No. 3 in the BCS standings and earned them an invitation to the Sugar Bowl, the school’s second consecutive BCS game.

Wow this seems to me like he wasn't welcomed back or was getting a demotion back to WR's coach.

You don't leave ND as the OC to become Cinnci's OC

Good luck coach and thanks for everything

As I noted in the ND coaching thread, the second report, Matt Jones, isn't confirmation. Jones simply copied Thamel's tweet/story with attribution but with no additional info. That's a circular rumor.

I could see Denbrock leaving a real possibility. I expected him to go before Sanford. Sanford was hired as an offensive wizard/QB guru/HC in the making ... with Denbrock on the job. Sanford got rave reviews on arrival but seemed to be kept in the background. Although Kelly's on thin ice, Sanford didn't wait around for change in head coach.

I still haven't figured out who really planned the offense this year, who coached the QBs, and who called the plays despite the job titles. Supposedly Kelly spent more time on defense, leaving the offense to Denbrock and Sanford and QBs to Sanford.

The offense still had redzone shortcomings as in years past. Kizer, to me, regressed regardless of the NCS/hurricane game. He underthrew, overthrew, was wide left, or wide right with open receivers in many game. Did they all run the wrong route? Sometimes 2nd year QB's have a down year but with a "guru" establishing his mark to be a HC?

In game threads and post game threads there were frequent laments that the game calling looked like it had over the past half dozen years. Was it really Denbock's and/or Sanford's or was it really Kelly's.

Has Denbrock seen the writing on the wall? New ND hires have contract's "with the university". ALL contracts are with the university but the new guys get clauses that it's independent of the head coaches status. Are the existing coaches get that clause added?

I wouldn't find it strange to see Denbrock grab job security, regardless of title. Fickell's a defensive guy and is't going to be overcalling his OC ... at least not the first year. Considering that prospective it would be a promotion over being OC under Kelly.

I see Urban in the background playing ND coaching video games and laughing on how best to take Kelly's lunch money. This year it might be Denbrock to UC via Fickell.

Long-time UConn coach Randy Edsall returning to coach the Huskies - CBSSports.com
by Ben Kercheval 5h ago

A familiar name is headed back to UConn.

Randy Edsall, who coached the Huskies from 1999 to 2010 and helped transition to the program from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision, will coach the program again. The school announced Edsall's hiring Wednesday morning.

"We are excited to welcome back Coach Edsall to the University of Connecticut," university president Susan Herbst said in a statement. "He possesses the passion, experience, and commitment to lead our program and develop our student-athletes, both on and off the field."

USF assistants to split Taggart's bowl bonus

The USF football coaching staff, publicly applauded by athletic director Mark Harlan for leading the team in the wake of Willie Taggart's departure, is getting a financial pat on the back as well.

The school confirmed the $25,000 bonus Taggart was to receive for a bowl victory will be divided among his nine assistants, including interim coach T.J. Weist. The group guided the Bulls to a 46-39 overtime victory Thursday in the Birmingham Bowl, the school's first postseason triumph in six years.

One of those assistants reportedly will join Taggert in Eugene.

Willie Taggert's buyout with USF is $1.7 million and his contract with UO is reportedly $3.3 million/year. Mark Helfrich was making $3.5 million a year. Helfrich, who signed a five-year, $17.5 million extension in February of 2015, is owed $11.6 million in buyout from Oregon.
