MF reckons ND should have a schedule of USC, Stanford + every other game be a cupcake game.

He's not wrong though. To build a team with that elite players that can match up against that schedule, you need to consistently win 10+ most years. But that's not going to happen when you schedule yourself to 8-4.

Look at Ohio state; going 12-0 against a garbage schedule in 2012 helped bring in the recruiting class that laid the foundation for their title run two years later.

Time to put Stanford in the rotational category with MSU & UM.

With ND's ACC agreement, Cali is not as important as it was as ND's recruiting interest has shifted more heavily to the SE in the ACC footprint.

The following breakdown is more than enough to get ND in witha loss:

1. The ACC

2. SC

3. Tier 1 home and away series (UT, UGA, OSU, A&M, Wiscy)

4. Tier 1 reoccurring traditional rivals, 1 per year. (UM, MSU, Stanford)

5. Tier 2 games (NW, Vandy, Temple, Purdue, BYU)

6. Navy

7. 2 MAC level fillers

MF also thinks ND scheduling Navy is a bad idea

It is, at least in the middle of the season. Hard to prepare for in one week and a high rate of midseason injuries. Playing them in the first game every year would be ideal.

Also seems like a huge % of our Cali recruits end up as busts, flakes, or otherwise poor program fits.

'Cause you're getting what SC and the rest of PAC-12 didn't want. For the most part, if ND doesn't get in early and stay in the lead group on a highly ranked kid, I'd pass.

Interesting take on the II podcast regarding the high number of Georgia fans attending - to paraphrase:

One of the best gameday atmospheres ever was that sea of red Nebraska game because the ND fans that were there really wanted to be there, as did the Nebraska fans that were there. This led to a generally raucous atmosphere with the ND fans being more loud and intense due to their being pissed about the Nebraska contingent.

All things 'Cali' suck...

Including posters named ACamp.

That's an interesting observation. The Utah game in 2010 was a great atmosphere game. I can tell you in the gold seats a LOT of usual ticket holders were gone for that one. They basically threw in the towel for that season and didn't expect the Irish to win against a ranked Utes team. Instead Utah came in shell-shocked after their first loss a week prior, and they looked completely intimated by the venue (ND stadium was roughly twice the size of any location they played up to that point in 2010). It made for a great game, very loud, and a lot of fun.

Even the highly ranked kids... you can't get through the California public school system without becoming a brain-addled burnout.

Agreed, that's 3 teams on the schedule that are more talented than we are. Adding Michigan on to a schedule that included FSU, USC, and Stanford was such a boneheaded move by Swarbrick; it was robust enough schedule that 11-1 would've put is in good standing for the playoffs anyway. Mike Frank has brought up a very valid concern that Swarbrick is scheduling is out of contention.

Agreed, However it does put us in a nice position if we can win some of these games.

While there are a few pockets of good public schools in California, I'd have no problem if ND recruited just the Top 20 Catholic schools in the state... that is as soon as Jack Lamb, Geordon Porter, Tariq Bracy and Chris Mitchell are signed in February.

If ND was located in CA, bama would be wishing they were ND

If ND was in Orange County, they'd be unstoppable in CFB. Same thing if they were in Palm Beach Co. FL.

Looking forward to the game. Their strengths appear to be our weaknesses... Our strengths appear to be their weaknesses. From what I have been reading home field might not be as big a factor as we might hope.

Can Fromm handle the pressure? Who knows. I think the wild card in this game... from what I have read on several boards... is that the Dawgs have no idea (or respect) for the versatility of our offense.

If we can play decent defense, I think we win. GO IRISH!!! Cheers!

Early return on Georgia fans... they're asshole hillbillies. Closer to Michigan fans than Clemson fans. Expect them to be very annoying.

I'm shocked to hear that. Been to 3 Georgia games, and don't remember anything close to Michigan levels of assholery. Had fun with them each time.

FWIW, the staff on Irish Illustrated's podcast were unanimous in picking the Irish.

I live right in the middle of Dawg country and I find their fan base to be the same as most fan bases. You have some good fans and some obnoxious fans. Just depends on which ones you interact with that tends to form your opinion.

Yeah, I know a few Georgia grads. All are pleasant people re: football watching and everything else. I'm just relaying what I've heard from choice encounters in Chicago and South Bend today... sober, a full 48 hours before kickoff too... and it sounds sort of shocking the amount of open hostility some of them are displaying to anyone wearing ND apparel. I expected them to be a lot more like Clemson fans... passionate but courteous. Shrug.

And these are the fans able to afford expensive tickets/airfare/hotel. Money doesn't buy class by any means, but the sewer dwelling fans are the ones you would expect to be acting the fool.

I see Elko stacking the box and forcing Fromm to win it in the air. The secondary will decide this game. That's assuming we stop the run with the box stacked.

If we don't.... well

But the Temple performance gave me that ol "This ain't your grand pappy's Fightin Irish" feeling, so I'm eager to see the staff build upon it and have the boys well prepared.

23-17 Irish 🍀
