What Offensive Scheme does temple run with the new coach in place?

?

Under their previous coach, Matt Ruhle, Temple played smash mouth complete with fullback and tight ends. The game plan was to win through ball control, field position, and solid defense.

The new HC Geoff Collins was the former DC at UF and is known for tough defense.

His new OC Dave Patenaude comes from 1AA Coastal Carolina. He was an OC at Georetown and another 1AA caliber school previously. This is his first gig at 1A ball but he's been a football coach for 25 years or so. Patenaude produced high yardage offenses through running and passing at Coastal Carolina.

I suspect the offense would stay generally the same as this is a newly assembled coaching staff. Does Temple have the personnel on the team to switch offenses or will they need a couple of years to make a switch by recruiting personnel to fit a different system?

When RichRod tried to force fit his spread at Michigan he had numerous defections of highly touted players and disaster ours results.

Beats me. I've looked at a dozen or so articles on CCU, mostly season previews or game previews, but none mentioned the offensive scheme. They did describe the CCU offense as among the nation's best, productive, balanced, scores more than 34 ppg. They raved about his QB's passing and running and RB's running and receiving.

Here's a CCU bio on Patenaude.

I am going to this game and USC this year. The USC game we are doing a full weekend in South Bend so for Temple we were looking at doing it different. We planned on Chicago and taking the Irish Express Tailgate to the game. Has anyone been on this before?

There really isn't many reviews I can find other than Yelp which is only a few. Looks like an awesome experience, was just wondering if others had experiences with it.

I have. I stayed in Chicago for the ND- GT game and took a bus to and from South Bend . I thought it was great. I can't remember the name of the bus we took but it was fully loaded with beer going to South Bend and coming back to Chicago. As soon as we arrived in South Bend the Bus had a tail gate set up and had food grilling. We were picked up and dropped off at Racine Plumbing Bar in Chicago. I would absolutely do it again if I were to go to another game.

Odd Sharks has Notre Dame as 16 point favorites and Sporting News has Notre Dame 13 point favorites. Think Notre Dame will cover?

Yes, rather easily.... This screams ND 38-10.. Hype train rolling, just to be smacked back down week 2 so we can hit 1000 pages of the Kelly Revisted thread

Bold Prediction: We rush for 350+ yards, 4 touchdowns. We are very vanilla on offense due to steam rolling Temple with simple run plays.

ND wins 35-17

ND 41-10.

Temple scores an early TD, but then the new Elko D exerts it's will on an over-matched opponent.

Adams, Dex and TJJr form a nasty three-headed attack, and Wimbush breaks off a 60+ yard run on a broken play.

Get hype

I'm not sure what to expect from this game. I can see it going 1 of 2 ways:

-Temple hangs around in the first half because either Brandon Wimbush has to shake out the first game jitters or because the defense is still adjusting to the Mike Elko defense. It's a close game at half but Notre Dame pulls away in the 3rd.

-The offense runs the ball 30+ times and Brandon Wimbush's throws are mostly 8-15 yard passes; not showing much of the playbook and offense has its way the whole game. The defense understand the new defense pretty quick as Elko's defense is known for being easy to pick up. They play a solid game and force some turnovers. Notre Dame has a 10-14 point lead after the 1st and it balloons after every quarter.

Obviously, scenario #2 is what we're all hoping for but I wouldn't be surprised if scenario #1 occurs due to all the new faces on the staff.

34-21.

Late Irish score seals it. Wimbush is up and down, has two TO's. Defense has it's moments, both good and bad. Special teams remain a concern and red zone scoring isn't crisp in week one.

People will overreact.

Agree. Then week two it all comes together and ND goes off...

This is what scares me. It's year 8. He has a starting QB making his first career start. If the typical vanilla BS is run all game, depriving Wimbush of meaningful snaps before UGA, then I don't know what to tell BK at this point.

We know what the backfield can do. We know what the line can do. We have no idea what the QB and receivers can do.

This is interesting. It seems that there is literally no way for BK to not have detractors after this game. I'm like many others, that would love to see us rush 60% of the plays and look improved on defense. All the while protecting our playbook from UGA the following week.

But it seems here, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that you want BK to open up the playbook. Let Wimbush loose and really let us see what we have for offensive weapons? Sure it would be fun from a viewing perspective. But I guess I see that as a completely impractical way to gameplan against a team you are extremely outmatching in talent. Why open it up to possible turnovers and/or speed up the game against this type of opponent?

That's the kind of shat BK has done in the past that has aggravated us to the maximum. Airing it out for kicks is how you end up losing to Tulsa and South Florida.

1). ND wins
2). whether easily or not mainly depending upon whether Wimbush is "really good" or just OK (regardless of how much of the playbook he gets to run)
3). we run quite a bit of it but with nothing "fancy." (It would be stupid to show Georgia anything.) Our offense looks a lot like Chip Long's and Kelly's generic past, since Georgia thinks that anyway. That means a lot of two TEs but plenty of throwing standard routes too (there even could be a phony play package just to get GA to waste practice time)
4). the defense is better than we think, and Martini and Morgan create a lot of havoc
5). because of "4", we win without it being a nail-biter --- all assuming Temple doesn't discover a serious hidden gem QB
6). for one week at least, Elko becomes a legend, even on ND chat sites
7). many on IE call for Kelly's firing regardless

Tulsa and USF were early regime games. No excuse for what happened, but it's in the past. Year 8, coming off 4-8. Do or die. By now, a home game against Temple should be a relatively comfy win no matter how you approach it.

I do want to see BK speed the game up AT TIMES. The UGA game will be at full speed for 60 minutes, regardless of what plays are being run. BW needs a taste of what's to come IMO. We can do that without putting it in the air 30+ times, but make the kid sweat through a few series at the very least.

Yeah, we're all entitled to our opinions. I disagree with you here. I don't see how any advantages in that gameplan could outweigh the inherent risk of losing to an inferior opponent in the same fashion we've done so on many occasions. If this is going to be a "comfy win", then air it out a little in the end when the lead is substantial. Otherwise, I see no value in doing that.

Vanilla offense just means no little gimmicks or creases but we can certainly show part of our hand. Kelly knows this, he'll show some plays more than once and they will be run the exact same way because we can over power an inferior opponent.

Then he'll run the exact same plays/formations but they'll have different targets or we'll line up the same and run different plays that expose defenses.

Vanilla means nothing besides: don't run the same damn series of plays next week. Kelly and Long have enough talent they should be able to change things from week to week. And keep the strengths from week to week.

Does anyone have any info on Temple? I know that they return some players on offense and in their secondary, but they have to replace their QB and their front 7 is young.

Any scoring predictions? I'm getting nervous for this game (but I always do). Someone convince me why we will win this game comfortably.

I read a Temple forum (probably a bad idea) and they are either very confident in their defense or have no idea how good our offense is going to be. I'll go with the ladder.
