Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported the alleged incident occurred April 3, adding additional information in a series of tweets:
“ Alleged victim went to emergency room and reported sexual assault after meeting him at club called Scruffy Murphy's. Victim alleged to Baylor police that Shawn Oakman 'forcibly removed' her clothing and 'proceeded to sexually assault her.' According to police, victim was treated for injuries, and sexual assault investigation was conducted at Providence Medical Center. According to police report, Shawn Oakman spoke briefly with police and 'he admitted to only having consensual sex with Victim.' ”
Baylor has recently been the subject of criticism for the way it has handled previous sexual assault allegations. Former Baylor football players Tevin Elliott and Sam Ukwuachu were both convicted of sexually assaulting other students.
In 2014, Elliott was sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting a student, and two additional students testified at the trial that he sexually assaulted them as well. One of the victims filed a federal Title IX lawsuit against the school, "alleging Baylor officials were indifferent to her report of sexual assault and knew of Elliott's proclivity toward violence against women," per Witherspoon.
As for Ukwuachu, jurors suggested that he receive probation after he was convicted of sexual assault in August. Witherspoon noted the university asked a law school professor to internally review Baylor's practices for reporting sexual assaults in the aftermath of the Ukwuachu case. Baylor also hired a Philadelphia-based law firm to review the procedures in place and make suggestions.
Oakman finished with 11 sacks in 2014 but only 4.5 in 2015. Perhaps because of that drop-off in production, B/R's Matt Miller listed the 6'8" Oakman as a Round 5 target in late January.
