I feel sooooooooo sorry for white guys. They just have it incredibly rough. You've convinced me - I'd much rather be Black or Latino than Anglo - they get ALL the breaks without having to face any racism. After all, we're just "fashionable minorities" to you - the REAL victims are the white dudes.

#makeAmericaWhiteagain

Racial discrimination is justified, provided it is discrimination against whites.

As a huge Celtic fan I do remember a group of fans getting in trouble for 'troublesome speech and signs' at a game a few years back... This group of four or five guys got jail time (I want to say it was pretty significant time too) and were banned from attending a soccer match for life for this incident. I forget what the speech or signs in question even were but I do remember thinking it was something very small scale by American standards... there was even a sixth 'offender' whose face was put up all over Scotland and some huge man hunt was put in place for him... all for yelling stuff at players I think it was...

different. world.

I guess there are lots of people for whom something is 'wrong,' because there are obviously plenty who do apply to all of the Ivies. My point is there is not a single white or Asian person among the entire group of people admitted to all the Ivies who get media attention. This is of course never noted by the media reports, nor that it takes spots away from other people who are probably more qualified. The media reports it as if it some amazing feat. It would only be an amazing feat if it were done by an Asian person.

Oh yeah? There are? Show me ANY data that shows that there is a significantly large portion of high school students that apply to all 8 Ivies. I'll wait.

This was one example in my argument, it hardly forms the core of it. The data I've presented and linked to forms the core of it. On the other hand, if you really think this anecdotal evidence measures nothing, I'm not sure what to say. It stands to reason that if affirmative action is practiced in all of the Ivies (it is) it will be reflected in who gets admitted to all of them.

I can't talk to someone who doesn't understand the fundamental concepts of selection-bias and sample size.

I'll produce that right after I find evidence of a white or Asian admitted to all eight Ivies. Again, I'm looking for one such person. Not one-hundred. One. The fact that it is this hard to find such a person is my point.

Again, this anecdotal evidence is not meant to be critical to the argument. If you dislike this part of my argument so much, you can look at the other parts.

You have convinced me that this is an unsuccessful part of my argument, though. I'll defend my remarks about students admitted to all of the eight Ivies as an interesting anecdote, but I'll stop making any claims beyond that.

Um, I don't think you understand the word Asian. I already pointed out to you that someone from India did it. So nice try. Also someone from the EU (Bulgaria) as well. So nice try as usual.

Also I think it is interesting that you focus on Asians. Asians make up about 5.5% of the population and something like 17.5% of the undergrads at Harvard.

I am referring to people living in America but descended from East Asians when I say 'Asian.' I'll say 'American East Asian' from now on so that is clear.

As for Harvard, my point is that without racial preferences there would be more Asians at Harvard than there are now. Asians are under-represented relative to their portion of qualified students. Without preferences, Harvard would look more like Caltech.

Did you ever think that maybe that has to do (mostly) with the demographics of the population around the university. California has significantly more Asians than any other state in the country (both by number and percentage of population) so it would make sense that CalTech has a higher proportion of Asian Students (same thing with UCLA and Cal Berkley).

You poor, poor oppressed man. You should be commended for doing so much in life despite facing all the racism you have faced as an upper class white male. The struggle is real! I will pray for you on your quest to #MakeAmericaWhiteAgain.

This is the last thing I'll add here... I went to the highest achieving high school in the country. Not "one of the best"... no, the place with the single highest concentration of academic talent in this entire country. I do not know of a single person in the entire school that applied to all 8 Ivies. Now, there might've been someone who did, and I simply didn't know them or hear about it. I almost want to put out a blast in our Facebook alumni group to see if anyone in the past decade or so applied to all 8... but in my experience going to school with 100s of Ivy caliber students, it's just not something that happened. In a place where the AVERAGE student has Harvard caliber scores, you would think that there would be a single person that applied to all 8 Ivies if it was a common thing, right?

I do know (not "know of"... personally know from my class at my school) multiple white and Asian people that got into all of the Big 3. One of which was on my lacrosse team, and went to MIT. If he had applied to all 8 Ivies, he would have certainly gotten in. You do not get into MIT/Stanford/Harvard/Yale/Princeton and not breeze by admissions at a "meh" school like Cornell.

I know that anecdotes are generally worthless, but my larger point is that I believe these people you see articles about are simply self-indulgent unicorns that applied to all 8 Ivies just to say they did and then contacted reporters to write a story about how awesome they are.

Like we were talking about previously, if you wanted to make an argument about affirmative action, you'd be better served by just posting this chart.

MedSchool.jpg

This data is inarguable. A black person and an Asian person with the same low-end MCAT scores have a 58.7% and a 6.5% chance of getting accepted to med school, respectively. Phrased another way, just because of their skin pigmentation one student has an 903% better chance of getting accepted than a student with the same academic profile and different skin color. Or, phrased ANOTHER way, a black person with the worst scores shown on that chart has the same chance of acceptance as an Asian person with the BEST scores.

So my problem isn't with discussion of affirmative action and its pros/cons, I just think earlier you were using a strikingly bad anecdote about Ivy League acceptance to "all 8".

That graph is really upsetting to me and actually disturbing in a field like medicine.

Can we leave UCLA the way it is though...

(Seriously, it's like an all you can eat Asian and Mexican buffet for the eyes.... )

The woman are unbelievable. Just astounding. I was so freakin' bummed when I didn't get accepted (but I did get accepted to USC, but couldn't pull the trigger on a school I was groomed to hate).

So I will not argue with the WOMEN making it the most beautiful campus in the country. But I am not a big fan of the campus itself. Some beautiful parts, no doubt, but far too spread out. I am obviously biased, but for me, no campus I’ve been to across the country beats the ND campus on a crisp fall day (or a beautiful soring day for that matter). Better than Stanford even, for me anyway.

Some people have a funny idea of freedom of speech. Freedom of speech includes one, or many exerting pressure on others to right perceived wrongs. It does not include freedom for some individuals to hear from others that want to right wrongs.

For example : Wouldn't a law, no matter how frivolous that made it illegal for anyone to say the 'n-word,' be upheld as constitutional? And how would anyone's free speech be infringed upon if it was?

Now please note, I am in agreement that all the cases brought up in this thread, justify scrutiny, and probably criticism. But lets face it, people who go to such extremes in reacting to a situation, are probably doing so try to keep reality in line with their fantasies. Which is the foundation of mental illness. Why play in their sandbox?

On another level :

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported the alleged incident occurred April 3, adding additional information in a series of tweets:

“ Alleged victim went to emergency room and reported sexual assault after meeting him at club called Scruffy Murphy's. Victim alleged to Baylor police that Shawn Oakman 'forcibly removed' her clothing and 'proceeded to sexually assault her.' According to police, victim was treated for injuries, and sexual assault investigation was conducted at Providence Medical Center. According to police report, Shawn Oakman spoke briefly with police and 'he admitted to only having consensual sex with Victim.' ”

Baylor has recently been the subject of criticism for the way it has handled previous sexual assault allegations. Former Baylor football players Tevin Elliott and Sam Ukwuachu were both convicted of sexually assaulting other students.

In 2014, Elliott was sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting a student, and two additional students testified at the trial that he sexually assaulted them as well. One of the victims filed a federal Title IX lawsuit against the school, "alleging Baylor officials were indifferent to her report of sexual assault and knew of Elliott's proclivity toward violence against women," per Witherspoon.

As for Ukwuachu, jurors suggested that he receive probation after he was convicted of sexual assault in August. Witherspoon noted the university asked a law school professor to internally review Baylor's practices for reporting sexual assaults in the aftermath of the Ukwuachu case. Baylor also hired a Philadelphia-based law firm to review the procedures in place and make suggestions.

Oakman finished with 11 sacks in 2014 but only 4.5 in 2015. Perhaps because of that drop-off in production, B/R's Matt Miller listed the 6'8" Oakman as a Round 5 target in late January.

This is exactly what I am talking about. These women are damaged, and in the process of seeking justice, they are damaged again. So, if they go a bit overboard in their reaction, providing a catalyst for change, is it so bad?

City of L.A. is removing the cross that is in a section of the city seal. The reason being they now claim the seal favors certain people over others. I found reports of this fight by some including a lawsuit by the ACLU dating back to 2004. They have now caved according to local news this morning.

My opinion....it is pretty sad when the minority rules the majority in a society. Speaking of the 1%....it is amazing what certain small groups are able to accomplish when they are loud enough and have the right people/person fighting on their behalf.

They better change the name of the city too then. Maybe switch to something less offensive like Kale.

I always thought it was "You see LA"

What kinda crappy Childish fan are you? (I can rap at least a few of his songs in their entirety. You See Me and The Party probably being my best.) Kidding. But it's definitely UCLA, which is covered with Asian girls.

I was told to look up Childish Gambino once upon a time. I thought I recognized him.

Then I realized that I was technically an OG Gambino fan:

That's where I started. I even own the Mystery Team movie...which was also my first introduction to Aubrey Plaza.

This is one of the greatest videos along with National Spelling Bee:

Haha I almost went with the Bro Rape video, but I didn't want to go too strong. National Spelling Bee is great, but I think my favorites are Keyboard Kid or Dry Blowjob.
