PSU boards are saying its a PSU/Ohio State matchup with ND running in 3rd. Staying close to home is big for Holley and having a cousin at Penn State is helping them. Say that he is 2 months from even being close to a decision, whatever that means.

They are just making it up.

I have family currently at Penn State and can understand someone being attracted by that school if you're into the big school thing. For Holley specifically, Penn State has a couple things going for it. First, they're closer to home. Second, they have scholarship limits that mean early PT is all but guaranteed.

That's it though. We routinely beat PSU for recruits before and after the sanctions. PSU won't play for championships, they aren't Notre Dame, and we should continue to win these recruiting battles more often than we lose them.

Ohio State running #2? That would really surprise me. I don't really buy that at all.

Yes. I know he visited but he's not been particularly linked to OSU, has he? Kind of sounded like Florida schools were the most likely after us and Penn State. Maybe just Penn State fans obsessing about a nearby rival?

If we land Holley, PSU fan message boards will be in a uproar. I'll calmly bring this to their attention:

Ishaq Williams - 2011
Jarron Jones - 2012
Mike McGlinchey - 2013
Thomas Holley - 2014

We stealin' them all PSU! See ya in 2015 bitchesss!

And I think the 7.73 million buyout will keep him at State College for the foreseeable future.

edit: Not to mention the nearly 1 million increase in salary.

Pretty sure O'Brien's new contract contains outs for NFL jobs.

Everyone is going to do what everyone is going to do. Forget about the head coach conversation. If the NFL wants Coach X, they will buy Coach X.

As far as recruits, I regularly forget about 80% of what all recruiting groupies say and feel I am the better man for it. I distinguish between recruiting groupies and people that intelligently follow recruiting, and a couple of the services.

Notwithstanding, I cannot find a way to place myself in the position of any of these kids, and find myself set in motion by some of the speculative motivations I see on fan boards.

Yes, and the out is a $7.73 million buyout. PSU doesn't want to have to find a new coach before the sanctions are over. Hence the buyout.

You're not getting it. The out clauses that coaches have for the NFL are "exclusion" clauses. They allow the coaches to leave without a buyout for certain positions.

That's not my understanding of it. As I said before, PSU doesn't want to hire another coach before sanctions end. I don't think there are exclusion clauses. But then again, I haven't read the contract and I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt it.

Breaking down Bill O'Brien's new contract, and what his buyouts would be | PennLive.com

Should O'Brien leave Penn State for an NFL job, he owes the university his current year's base salary times the number of years remaining on the deal. Just the base salary, not any radio/TV money or Nike deal compensation.

Here are O'Brien's year-by-year salaries for the remainder of the contract. And the start of each new year of O'Brien's contract is always July 1.

July 1, 2013: $1,932,779.

July 1, 2014: $1,137,096.

July 1, 2015: $1,650,994.

July 1, 2016: $1,733,543.

Penn St wasn't in a very good bargaining position when they hired O'Brien. I haven't read his contract nor have I ever given a shits enough to research its terms. But, it seems highly unlikely that Penn State would have been on position to impose terms which would leave it practically impossible to get out of the deal to take an NFL job

So not even close to 7.73 million in other words

True, but lets remember also that O'Brien was an unknown commodity when the hire was made. PSU was reaching, but they landed a diamond in the rough in O'Brien. Too classy for Penn State.

A lot of people knew who Bill O'Brien was.
