Watched Willow with my boys two weeks ago. What a great movie:

And we watched Return of the King for the first time on Friday. A masterpiece.

Ur a dick

Seriously though, 'Up' always got me, even before kids.

'Toy Story 3,' as well. Though I do get the warm and fuzzies when you see the baby abusing the toys and throwing them under the shelf during the credits, and you see the toys happily taking turns to "tag in" and take their turn.

I cried at the end of Toy Story 3 and I don't have kids. It was more about me not being a child anymore and that made me sad.

When you have kids it takes on the structure of a Greek tragedy. They're so pure and innocent but they won't be someday and they don't know it but you do because that was you.

This one, every time for me. As soon as he comes over the hill and the horns start playing

Off topic: I know the belief that Toy Story 3 is amazing almost sacrosanct on the internet but Toy Story 3 is overrated. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but thematically it's just Toy Story 2 again. Toy Story 2 was more original, better written, better paced, and dealt with Woody coming to terms with his mortality in a much more subtle way.

I'll also say that Jessie's Song was the most emotionally affecting moment of the trilogy and was way rougher on me than the closing moments of TS3.

This. I don't think the ending of Toy Story makes people emotional for the reason that some people think. It's not so much about becoming a parent or related to kids in general, it's more personal and for adults. It's tied to the loss of innocence from childhood. Toy Story was released in '95, while Toy Story 3 came out in 2010. The kids that were 5 when the first came out were 20 when the third came. It's about nostalgia, Cats in the Cradle type stuff. We all grew up with a favorite toy once, and to you that toy was real and magical. At some point you had to give that up, and with it your life was forever changed.

As a new-ish father to a toddler and a 6-month old, games with storylines revolving around children are far more emotionally impactful than they used to be. It's nice, but it also sucks lol.

Kids change everything about life, man.

I've felt the same way. I remember several years ago hearing and seeing the story of Wang Yue, the little 2 year old girl that was run over in China. Dozens of people walked by and did nothing for her as she lie dying in the street. It was hard to hear about, but even harder to watch. At the time my daughter was also 2, which is probably why it hit me a little harder. It's hard for me to recall a time I was so angry, sad, and hurt all at once. I know prior to kids that story would have affected me, but not nearly so deeply.

Everyone talks about the furnace scene being the emotional dagger of TS3, but for me it's Andy's farewell. The plight of the toys isn't what's sad, it's the maturation of Andy.

I kinda feel this way about ALL the Toy Story films... never got into any of them.

That stuff all interacts with parenthood though. I don't get sad thinking about my own loss of innocence because it's too late for me. I get sad thinking about my daughters' loss of innocence because they're still in the midst of it and you want to keep them there forever, but you're obviously powerless to stop it. The sadness of missing your own childhood is nowhere near as powerful as the melancholy as the knowledge that your child will someday miss their own in the same way.

If it makes you feel any better, by the time that happens they won't be sad about it, they'll be sadder about the knowledge that someday your grandchild will someday miss their own in the same way.

It's sadness all the way down.

See, I don't see it that way. My kids are enjoying the good years right now, but my job is to provide for them and make sure they're prepared for the next step of their journey. It's a tough balance between the "fun" and "work" for them, but it definitely scales more towards the fun. For now they get to enjoy that innocence and be free from soul crushing responsibilities. It may be too late for me, but that's all the reason more why it's hard to look back and see how easy we had it and how simple things were back then.

I know one thing, I'm going to be sitting down and playing Secret of Mana on the SNES with the kids this weekend. (See, Whiskey, I brought it back to gaming!)

Have you watched Christopher Robin yet? You'll be crying within ten minutes.

Christopher Robin almost got me crying ON A FREAKIN AIRPLANE in first class next to a top 5 milf of all time.

Took a lot of self control to keep it together.

Watched Blockers last night with John Cena and Leslie Mann. Parents find out their daughters are going to have sex on prom night and try to stop them. Turned out to be pretty funny IMO. Especially the scene with subtitles.

I've not watched Cena in any other movies, but he's pretty good in this one.

Took my boys to see Captain Marvel on Friday night. Was pleasantly surprised. A solidly above-average MCU offering. There was one song at the end that was a little too on the nose with the whole "girl power" thing, but otherwise I had few complaints. They did an incredible job making Samuel L. Jackson look young.

I also saw Captain Marvel this weekend. Solid to even good.

I thought it was a nice change up on the "origin" formula, trying to piece things together along with the character.

I'm not sure that it will have the 'rewatchability' factor that some of the other MCU films have, simply because a lot of the fun and impact from the story was set up by the mystery, rather than the set pieces themselves, but I really enjoyed it.

I watched Ricky Gervais 'Humanity' over the last week. The first 30 minutes was cardiac arrest level funny. Best half hour of comedy in a long time.

Watched Mortal Engines a couple of nights ago. It’s a real mess. Visually it’s very impressive but the story is all over the place. Really and writing. The performances were meh with the exception of one “bad ass” Asian lady who was just awful. It’s no wonder this movie flopped.
