Yeah looking at it, there isn't too much that really jumps out as home runs, maybe Eyes Wide Shut, 6th sense or Green Mile?? but then there are a TON of just fun, or memorable movies, Go, Matrix, Fight Club, American Pie, Spy Who Shagged me, The Mummy, South Park, American Beauty, Deep Blue Sea, Boondock Saints, Payback, Cruel Intentions... quite a bit of original content or fresh takes that were not yet retread.

The teeny bopper moviess of that general year were awesome... Go, Can't Hardly Wait, American Pie, She's All That, Cruel Intentions, 10 Things I Hate About You... I'm sure it's because nostalgia attached to being the perfect age for them but those are like the only movies of that base genre I'm really able to watch today. They're all pretty fun though.

There's a book that just came out about 1999 being the best year for movies ever. I haven't read the book but listened to a podcast breaking it down. I can see the case, even though I don't necessarily agree. It comes down to how you keep score. 1999 had lots of really good movies, but only a few great films. Whereas a year like 1939 or 1974 probably had fewer high-quality movies overall, but the gig films of those years are inarguable all-time classics. 1999 has a lot of triples and one or two home runs, but 1939 & 1974 have the grand slams.

I'm a TCM junkie and have seen pretty much every 1939 movie listed. Until I went back and looked at the list, i never realized how many good movies were released then. 1974's list is pretty stellar as well. I might give the nod to 1939 over 1974.

I mean, Gone With the Wind, Stagecoach, Oz and Mr Smith Goes to Washington just on their own should stack up against just about any other year...lol... amazing they all came out in one year.

6th Sense was very good. Green Mile almost as good IMO. didn't care for Eyes Wide Shut. American Pie was a pretty good laugh even if I wasn't a teeny bopper when it was released.

Eyes seems to be hit or miss with people... I thought it was amazing in many different ways. Visually it's one of the most beautiful films ever made imo... the lighting in that movie was nutzo. Also loved the core theme of "You're better off not knowing..."

That seems to be the consensus.

Finally watched Black Klansman. I was a little disappointed. It wasn’t bad but it just seemed to be missing something.

I haven't seen it, but from what I read it seemed to be missing a writer/director who is trying to make great movies as opposed to one who is making heavy-handed political screeds.

That is what he's known for. The flow just seemed off.

I think Spike Lee's balance was off. He was too focused on taking shots at Trump instead of making a good movie. Lee can do political and put out a damn good movie (e.g. "Do the Right Thing" "Malcolm X"). But he misses more often than he hits.

I thought Do The Right Thing was pretty garbage honestly.... I guess if I had to pick a Lee movie I enjoyed the first one that comes to mind is 25th hour

Think it is difficult to name a good Spike Lee movie as he is too political/racially driven in his movies

I think "Clockers" is one of Spike Lee's best. It's well made and engrossing; has all of Lee's passion with little to none of his angry sermonizing.

Saw First Reformed last night. Very good, but I can see why it didn't resonate with a ton of people.

Lego 2movie is great if you have kids (and it directly ties in to The Lego movie). It has enough developed humor for the adults to stay engaged.

I really like them

Just read back through the discussion of best movie years from the past page or two and I'd like to nominate 2010 as a modern killer year.

2010 had:

The Social Network
Inception
Shutter Island
Winters Bone
True Grit
The Fighter
Toy Story 3
Black Swan
The King's Speech
127 Hours
The Town

Inside Man!

That's an awesome movie and has zero political content.

No Political content absorption to Inside Man? WOW!

How about Scent of a Woman... Great movie with one of the best rap me up speeches of all time. Minus Spike Lee and all....

Shutter Island - the last bit of dialogue is what made it great. Without the last scene, it would've been alright but I love what they did at the end. His decision stuck with me for a while.
