1990 was a really strong year for movies. Lots of classics and hits:

Goodfellas
The Hunt for Red October
Misery
Dances with Wolves
Miller's Crossing (one of my all time favorites)
Back to the Future 3
Total Recall
Die Hard 2
Dick Tracy
Home Alone
Tremors
Dark Man
Wild at Heart
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
Pretty Woman
Ghost

(I feel dirty writing those last 2 but they were huge hits and still resonate with some people)

Finally saw Bad Times at the El Royale. Really enjoyed it but was hoping for a more twisty ending.

Good film. I really like John Hamm as an actor. I find myself watching pretty much anything he's in.

He was great. Part of my frustration with the ending was that we never found out what he was investigating. I also was waiting for a twist with Darlene that never came.

Watched Free Solo over the weekend... I could not decide what made this guy seem more crazy, the way he climbs mountains without ropes and such or dating that loony chick of his.

Got dragged to the new Aladdin yesterday. It was better than expected, though that's an admittedly very low bar. Smith did a pretty good job of making the genie his own, and I appreciated Richie's attempts at historical realism; though the obviously Islamic trappings of the story made the feminist angle they created for Jasmine even less believable than it otherwise would have been. And the two new songs they added for Jasmine seemed like music videos inserted into the movie.

Thats a phenomenal documentary. I was white knuckling my theater chair even though I knew the outcome. What made you think the girl was loony? She seemed pretty reasonable to me. Just didn't want her boyfriend to kill himself.

If you enjoyed that one I'd recommend "The Dawn Wall". Another crazy climbing doc on Netflix.

Ha, different strokes I guess... my brother in law and I were dying laughing at their relationship. "Bro, just fall, if she's what waits at the end you're better off..."

Watched “Highwaymen” on Netflix this past weekend. It’s a fairly accurate movie about the tracking & killing of Bonnie & Clyde from the perspective of the 2 Texas Rangers tasked to doing it. That meant the “bad guys” weren’t glamorized and it had more of a historical context. Costner & Harrelson did a good job...not great...but good. I’d recommend it.

Watched Wind River with Jeremy Renner and All the Devil's Men on the flight back home.

Wind River is very good. About a Conservation Officer that is asked to help the local police and a novice FBI agent investigate a murder on a reservation where an oil company has a station.

All the Devil's Men is one to watch when you don't have much to watch.

I finally watched "John Wick 2" in anticipation of seeing part 3 in the theater. It was entertaining but not as good as the first. The action scenes weren't as sharp as the first film. I do appreciate how the director uses more mise-en-scene for both action and non-action scenes. It's a nice break from the "edit static shots every half-second to give the illusion of action" approach. A lot of sequels fail because they try to do too much, and "John Wick 2" admirably tries to avoid that by keeping things relatively simple. However, I think it went too far in that direction. The movie needed a bit more to punch it up; it felt like a pale imitation of the first. It was okay, it just didn't stack up well to the first installment.

I watched The Woodsman this weekend. It's a 2004 movie starring Kevin Bacon where he plays a child molester who's been paroled after 12 years in prison and returns to his hometown of Philadelphia to start his life again. He still struggles with his attraction to young girls, but also comes to realize how much he's hurt his past victims. It's well worth the watch and Bacon did an outstanding job.

That sort of nuance would never be made today. In the 2019 remake, he takes 2 steps outside of prison and he's murdered and then his parents are raped and everyone claps and cheers and feels relieved.

Turner Classic Movies 1939 Night - Tonight

They're showing a number of '39 movies. Currently Ninotchka with Garbo and Melvyn Douglas. Earlier was Only Angels Have Wings, Cary Grant.

Next up is Wizard of Oz.

At 8 pm ET They have a special, 1939: Hollywood's Greatest Year.

At 9 pm ET The Hunchback of Notre Dame, perhaps Charles Laughton greatest performance.

At 11:30 pm ET, Gunga Din, Cary Grant and Sam Jaffe as the water boy.

I watched "Airplane!" yesterday for the first time in a while. Man, that movie holds up. So damn funny. It's not at all PC and some of the references are too dated for the younger crowd. But as a pure comedy experience, with gag after gag coming at you non-stop, it's hard to beat.

I watched “Stranger than Fiction” this week. My wife fell asleep and awoke when it was over. She got luck. I told her she didn’t miss anything. The only positive was Maggie Gyllenhall (sp?) whom I’ve never liked as an actress. She was charming and actually attractive in this one. Overall, it was still a waste of time.

Took a couple of the granddaughters to see Toy Story 4 while down in FL. Pretty good, but not as good as the hype made it out to be. The one where the boy goes off to college was better IMO.

Definitely won't be a TS5.

The entire series is highly overrated... I wouldn't rate ANY Toy Story movies that high.

Rod Serling did an episode on The Twilight Zone that I believe is where Toy Story originated.

Nope. 3 and 1 are close but the ending to 3 puts it over the top for me. One of the most emotional final acts I can remember. Never cared for 2. I've always disliked Jessie.

I'd go in order: 1 > 2 > 3

1 is the best, because Woody and Buzz shine together.

2 is okay, and as you note, it's bogged down by Jessie, who is kind of annoying. "Woody Is Lost" and "Buzz's Search Party" could have been more interesting adventures, IMO. I honestly think the movie is saved by Ham being given some chances to shine with some of the more adult humor.

3 is largely forgettable, IMO, and is only saved by the last two or three scenes, which really tug on the heart strings.
