I watched "Star Trek: Beyond." It was entertaining and kept moving but I think it's time to retire the reboot. Outside of the thrill ride aspects, the filmmakers don't seem to know what to do with the characters besides play them for laughs or cheap emotional moments.

this...and I wasn't quite as enthusiastic of it as you were

The first entry was the appropriate mix of comedy, action and peril.

The second entry had a fantastic plot, but got way too serious for what the tone of the series should be.

The third entry over-corrected the issue, and got way too goofy. The plot suffered.

If they make another, they need to actually find the middle ground to reflect the first one again.

They can get away from the action movie heavy stories too... the third one was pretty bad imo.

I didn't think it was bad; it's just starting to get to be "Fast and the Furious" in space. Lots of high octane razzle dazzle, not much else.

"Mulholland Drive." I need to watch it again to try to figure out what happened. Probably one of David Lynch's best.

I saw "Dunkirk" in 70mm. It was very good. I was thinking that some people probably wouldn't like it because of the lack of exposition (which isn't necessary to enjoy the film). After the movie, my wife tells me that she heard this woman complaining that "there wasn't enough history in it." I guess she expected one of the characters to give a lecture explaining the minute details of the events. I can't stand people who need to have everything spoon fed to them.

Apparently, the new Death Wish trailer is causing quite a stir.

I don't know what a re-make of "Death Wish" has to offer. More violence? More shock value? The original was pretty brutal. Re-makes, IMO, should be able to tell a story better because of limitations of the time placed on the original version (e.g. updated special effects, Hays Code). Unless there's some interesting twist to the story, the new "Death Wish" seems like an unnecessary update.

Watched Beauty and the Beast live action with my nieces... I thought the CGI on the beast was not very good and it took away from the movie but my nieces loved it so obviously it wasn't made for me

I agree with this for all remakes, not just Death Wish.

BTW, as it is Eli Roth (Hostel) making this, I bet you are right about the more violence and shock value.

Loved loved loved Dunkirk.

It is a good film.

My only bone of contention is that they stretched, beyond any semblance of reality or believability, the sequence of the pilot being able to glide, maneuver, and shoot down a German aircraft, seemingly endlessly, with no fuel or power.

Picky? Yes. Had they shown him ejecting or ditching after his "kill" (and survived), I would have been a happy camper.

I have the same beef when I watch action or war films.

Be a happy camper!

Dunkirk Fact Check: How Long Could Tom Hardy's Plane Stay in the Air?

... so even after the Spitfire’s dogfights, the distance it traveled in the film without a propeller was well within the range of possibility.

"Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler" and "The Testament of Dr. Mabuse." Classic early German films from Fritz Lang. Some of the earliest pioneer films about the uber criminal mastermind. Characters like Keyser Soze are direct links to Mabuse. People who say old movies are boring should watch these movies.

Still not a happy camper.

He was not cruising at 20,000 feet. He was much lower in an effort to save fuel. He was nowhere near the speed of sound.

Spitfires can glide, but they are not gliders. Thermal updrafts would have a negligible effect on a plane of that weight.

At what altitude did he begin his glide? How many feet per second would he descend? How did the maneuver to turn to attack the enemy plane affect drag, air speed and the like. How likely was it that he was at the perfect altitude to fire on the plane.

Poetic/Dramatic license can only go so far until it collides with physics.

Watched King Arthur: Legend of the Sword this weekend. It was just flippin' awful. Lots of special effects and typical action movie over the top stuff that had very little connection to the original story. It was basically just a weird, typically modern action story that used the name and a very few elements of the Arthur legend. It was a poorly done version of A Knight's Tale/Avengers/pro wrestling love child with a crappy plot.

Could not agree more. I did not like the movie very much at all.
