I'll Always Look at The Texas Game Fondly

Yep, you heard me right... I'll never forget last weekend and always will look back on it as the best weekends of my life. I thought we would stomp them. I thought we would have at least a morsel of defense. I was wrong about all of that.

But I didn't spend Monday loathing life, fighting with the mouth breathers on Irish Envy or even giving two shits about football period. Because Texas gave me a great gift. Which is one of clarity, one of understanding that there are far more important things in life than football.

I watched the game with friends and my pregnant wife. We cheered, we ate Mexican food and we screamed at the tv as the Longhorns broke our collective hearts. We went home and I sat in my living room while my wife went to sleep. I stewed and thought about how much this night had sucked and then went to sleep. At 4:30am... It happened. My wife's water broke and gametime truly started. On Monday, in a hospital room with a golden dome view, my wife gave birth to my first child. While three weeks early, she is a happy and healthy little girl.

So I thank the Longhorns for inducing my rabid ND fan wife into labor. I thank them for giving me the two best gifts a man can ever receive.

1) A baby girl who has stolen my heart.
2) A true understanding that football is just a game. We always say that, but I never have meant it until now. I'll always love this team, but I truly feel like I can enjoy them as intended now.

Thank you Texas.

That is fantastic. Very glad everyone is healthy and she is a beautiful little girl.

Having children will give you a new perspective on a lot of things.

Congrats.

Congratulations Wooly!

Texas sized bow on that little nugget - reminds me of my daughter who took three years to grow enough hair to attach anything. Frustrated my wife to no end.

Absolutely great post!

Firstly, congrats on your beautiful baby girl! Truly a blessing!

Secondly, I too seemed to have kicked the ND football angst habit. In the past, I would allow it to really sour my mood and outlook for the weekend. I was very happy to say that it did not. Ive come to a pretty mellow place in my ND life where I realize ND is never going to be a Bama or even a OSU. Be it due to academic requirements, subpar coaching development or whatnot. ND will always be my team and I will always wear my ND shirt to work in a sea of Alabama fans proudly but at the end of the day, what a team of men doing 10+ hours away from me I have no control over. And it is foolish for me to allow them to have control over me.

Sadly, it has taken years to get to this mellow point. Guess we all mellow with age.

Congrats man!

I use to get irrationally upset after Notre Dame losses but since my son started watching football with me, I've completely mellowed out (my wife thinks otherwise). Crazy how one little being can change someone's whole perspective on what's important in life.

What a terrific job encapsulating the real important things in life. I have 4 children, but there is nothing like the first time. The first time you realize you are responsible for another life above your own. I never thought I'd have kids as a teenager, but I couldn't be happier with the direction my life has taken. Everything I do and how I think revolves around how to make my family's life better. Here's to you and the many nights you'll experience with little rest and many diapers that will need changing. It's all worthwhile the first time she calls you "daddy" or the first time she reaches her hand out for you to hold to make her feel safe. Enjoy all the hugs and kisses as it goes by fast(my oldest just began her senior year in high school). Congratulations to you and your wife!

Wonderful news, Wooly. Congrats! I remember the birth of my first daughter 22 years ago like it was yesterday. Everything about life got better at that moment and from now on. You definitely got a big win this weekend!

Congratulations Wooly. Very happy to hear everyone is happy and healthy. Let the real games begin.

Edit: My first was born the day before our lose to FSU in the 2011 bowl game. Maybe it's like every time ND loses an Irish fan is born.

Congrats brother. My little guy just turned one month, and he's definitely helped me with the whole "post-loss perspective" thing.

In the past, I would have been a total doucher towards my wife and friends immediately after the loss, and would have been grumpy the whole following week. However, this time around, I was bummed out for a minute... and then I realized that the baby needed to be fed and changed, and suddenly everything football-related seemed like small potatoes.

I'm glad your baby girl is healthy, and may she experience 11 straight wins and a playoff now that she's here!... But if not, the sun will rise, and we will still have our little ones to care for.

Congratulations on the lil girl homie... boys are for the poors!

My first and only was a little Greek princess that arrived after a crushing loss at Syracuse. I had the same feelings as you and she was appropriately named Epiphany.

Post a video of her tying her first fly asap.
