 So, let me get this straight. When women take a day off work, society will crumble and we'll all value how important women are in keeping things running. I'm fine with that, women are an integral part in keeping families and businesses thriving. However, if men were to take the day off, women would take over and everything would be infinitely better? GTFO. Can't have it both ways, both parties are needed. I understand the statement they're trying to make that women are underappreciated, yet the message in that article is probably the most sexist thing I've seen this week....but, hey, it's only sexist when a man says something like that.

My favorite part is the photo they put with the article. Presented without irony.

Half this board has gone an entire lifetime without women, I think we'll survive one day.....

Want to close wage gap? Step one: Change your major from feminist dance therapy to electrical engineering.

The point being: women electrical engineers are paid less (etc.) than male electrical engineers.

And so on and so forth.

Really? That was your experience in the engineering field?

The engineering firms that I worked for payed the same starting salary regardless of gender. Over time those that performed, again regardless of gender advanced while those that didn't usually found the raises sparse and moved on to other opportunities.

That is absolutely factually untrue in 2017. Any statistical difference in wages is fully explained by the decisions men and women make throughout their careers. Men work longer hours and don't take as much time off to raise children, period.

Debates have raged about the fact that only privileged women - those with salaries and/or flexibility in their work life - can realistically take a day off. For too many women who work at jobs that pay them hourly, a day off from work means a day off from the ability to buy food or other necessities . . . or even worse, a day of losing that job.

I don't think it's useful to criticize this attempt at solidarity, especially if the day serves to underscore just how many women are at the mercy of hourly wages.

I wonder how MEN would respond if THEY were at the mercy of hourly wages?

My bet is that we would STFU and go do our hourly wage work.............. like we have been doing for hundreds of years.

dshans grew up in the 60s, when it mattered less what you said and more how you said it. And dshans does words good, so.....

I'm leaning towards dshans.

You're actually on to something here. I think a lot of gender and racial issues we're living through today are the product of old timers who actually did grow up in a system that was inequitable to women and black folks. I really can't blame someone like John Lewis for seeing the country through the lens of racism because, for much of his life and especially his formative years, the country was a racist place. But issues arise when folks who are stuck in 1962 pass on that tainted view of our society to the next generation.

This, no doubt, is part of the issue. Another part is we're all looking for a cause to get behind. Once enough momentum is built (on historically outdated facts or otherwise), the cause will roll over most in it's path.

There was a misleading Micorsoft ad yesterday that tried to shock the audience with the "horrible" fact that only 6.7% of women have a STEM degree. I immediately went "I wonder what the percentage is for men?"

Here's the truth: last year, 30% of women in college graduated with STEM degrees versus 40% for men. This is not a huge difference. Microsoft was using a raw population number with no context. When you adjust for the large amount of women earning degrees than men, here's how the raw numbers shake out (roughly):

6.7% of women go on to college and graduate with a STEM degree.
7.5% of men go on to college and graduate with a STEM degree.

Yes, there is less than a 1% difference between genders in who is achieving STEM degrees. Yet, if you Google up the Microsoft ad it's cited as "powerful" and "inspiring" and people bemoan all of the roadblocks and discrimination women face achieving STEM degrees. It's all bunk. There is no factual basis to support this narrative. And people who work in a STEM field likewise know it's horse shit. And I think it's insulting to women (like my mom) of previous decades that faced real discrimination and roadblocks towards entering STEM fields.

Here's an article from the Institute for Family Studies pulling together a number of studies that show the majority of women want to avoid full-time work, especially when their children are young.

There's a study currently going on in my household that says women want to avoid any kind of work when the kids are young.

Women only want that because they've been conditioned by the patriarchy. Women's free will is a social construct.

Mothering is obviously demeaning work. Truly liberated women opt for wage slavery.#LateCapitalism

I listen to a radio show every morning that runs a program called "Second Date Update."

Some poor schmuck (guy or girl) will go on a date that they enjoy and thought went well, but then the other party will ghost on them, not calling back or taking calls. The radio peeps call the other party to see what happened and why they aren't calling back. They "forget" to mention that the other party is on the line, that way the individual really opens up about what they didn't like or what went wrong.

This morning, this girl called and said she had a nice time, went out with this guy and went back to his place, they fooled around, she stayed the night and snuck out in the morning, but left him breakfast and a sweet note. She expected him to call back for another date, but hadn't heard from him, he wasn't answering calls or texts, etc.

When they called the guy to see what happened, since everything sounded like it went well, he told them that when they started fooling around, he gave her a blowie. When she was "done," she patted him on the head, said "thanks," and then rolled over and went to bed.

Now, keep in mind that SHE was calling to see why HE didn't call her back. SHE wanted a second date. But when he talked about how that turned him off, and how he expected at least *some* type of reciprocal action, SHE got offended at the idea of a man expecting such a service.

When they asked him what breakfast she had made for him for when he woke up and found the note, he started laughing and said, "must have been a strong message. She left a banana."

They usually post a podcast. I'll link it here if they put it up later.

Actually, fun fact while we're at it, the dude who does War of the Roses got his show run out of Cincinnati because he *allegedly* beat his wife and then outed a bunch of confidential legal info about their divorce on the air one day in a meltdown.

So in addition to being a phony, he's also a general piece of trash.

I think he #DidItForTheRatings, but iHeart Radio wasn't about that life.
