Bring back Pat Haden. He was a class act IMO and seemed to love the lore and tradition of Notre Dame Football and the standards they hold themselves to as legit student athletes. He would gladly trade his degree for one from ND.

You sure about that last part? I agree though, for a rival announcer he was pretty unbiased and did a good job. He would be a welcome replacement.

I've always thought that Pat Haden was a class act and agree he often mentioned ND's traditions and both academic and student conduct standards. Operating under Monk's and NBC agreement that the announcers not be promoters of ND, I believe he's was the most fair to ND.

Haden was good to ND. I thought he wasn't a very good announcer though. Besides I couldn't take having to listen to a player being a fa nance major again. All. Season. Long.

To those mentioning Romo- I surprisingly like him. Yeah, his voice isn't very audible sometimes (and can be even more difficult to hear when he's excited), but I think he gives good analysis and his enthusiasm is infectious. But the clincher for me that Romo is a good announcer is that now Nantz isn't too bad. Nantz has always been at the top of my list for most hated football/basketball announcers, but now, paired with Romo, I don't mind him.

I don't understand what the posters on here are asking for?

Do you want the NBC game to be like the Notre Dame network where it is just homerism's for 4 hours?

Flutie does an reasonable job and is completely unbiased. I never heard him speak poorly of Notre Dame or give undeserved praise.

He isn't the best commentator, but he is far from the worst.

Somebody shuld do a Volyall piece to get Gruden as the ND commentator [

Just rewatched a bit of the first quarter. You need not look farther than the first or second series to see the Flutie bias.

Darnold fumbles the opening offensive snap. Flutie "It's clear to me Notre Dame ripped the ball out after he was already down." Instant replay comes back very quickly and upholds the call on the field.

Ensuing Irish possession Winbush finds St. Brown in the end zone on a long pass. Flutie says nothing complimentary about St. Brown's route or separation, and he criticizes Wimbush for throwing the ball late. Yeah, maybe he could have thrown it sooner, but he got it to him all the same with little to no issue. However, Flutie goes on to talk up Jack Jones, who blew the play and was out of position. Flutie's excuse? "Jack Jones is an excellent corner, and sometimes you're going to be aggressive."

Flutie is an ass.

It’d called ND on NBC, so it actually would be far more reasonable to have a homer than not.

I’m sure others have said this even better than I, but Flutie goes out of his way to be bad at his job essentially. He provides no analysis on most plays. I would go as far as to say, in terms of analysis, he is among the worst I’ve seen on NFL/CFB coverage this year. His bias leads him to compliment Darnold’s wasted passing motion and lack of footwork. His bias leaves fantastic play design by Long/Hiestand, or adjustments by Elko, largely unnoticed. He doesn’t speak poorly about Notre Dame because he doesn’t speak about them at all. An unbiased commentator would talk about ND 50% of the game, the opponent the other 50%. Instead of how ND is doing good, we hear in multiple cases false statements on how USC is doing bad.

I paid attention and though he had a really good first half.

then when ND pulled away he became a queer. Tirico deserves better. You deserve better.

I paid super attention too.. he wasn't that good in the first half ( in regards to bias)... it just seems if he has a clear cut ND play to analyze his energy is dead/completely flat/unenthusiastic... but if it's against ND...

GET HYPE!!!!! Such a play!!!

All I know is I've never done cocaine, but if we could get Tirico and Gus Johnson in the NBC booth there wouldn't be enough blow in Columbia to last me through the 1st quarter.

Seriously, the drive where we stopped them on 4th and 1, he was beyond excited with everything NC ST jumping in right away with analysis. ND gets the stop and about 10 seconds of dead air.

I actually didn’t think he was bad today haha.

He was more prepared with actual analysis about the things ND did that were good.

Either someone at NBC had a chat with him, or else the production crew did a better job of making sure he had scripted notes at least.

He talked up Mr. Adams quite well at the end of the game and his Heisman campaign.

Yeah he sucks. Every QB we face is Gods gift to college football and he can't shut his trap about how great the opposing players are. Then they get beat down and lose. And BC sucks.

I loved Flutie this last game
"Darnold is comfortable playing from behind has them right where he wants em....his motion is a lil loopy but extremely accurate..." Tirico interrupts, "INTERCEPTION!!!" He is a douche.

His analysis was truly painful to listen to this week. Darnold literally couldn't do anything wrong, even whilst doing many things wrong. Meanwhile, EVERY ND break wasn't earned, but rather the result of SC misfortune. It's downright insulting to listen to. I would expect this from an impartial network's team, but not NBC's. It's one thing to not hire a ND homer, an entirely other to hire a ND hater. Eff that noise. Either that shit is by design, or he's just that bad of an analyst. Either way, the dude needs to go.

Meh

I'd rather have Mike Mayock back. He was my favorite ND color analyst.

I don't know a real football fan who didn't like Mayock.. some might prefer others but no one can see he is terrible..

His problem was his inability to dumb it down and NBC didn't like that

Which is why I loved him. It was awesome to not only enjoy the game but actually learn about the game as it was going on.

Mayock was terrible. He had exactly TWO lines of analysis.

1. "I've talked to a lot of NFL scouts, and they told me..."

2. "So-and-so is one of the fastest / strongest / smartest / tallest players in all of college football."

OK? What is wrong with either of those?

1. Relaying information from professional scouts about someone's strengths or weaknesses. Cool?

2. Heaping basic praise on a player. Also fine?

Mayock sure as hell wasn't "terrible"... in fact he was the best color guy to do ND football for NBC in at least this decade.

Who is this Mayock you speak of? Was he an assistant to the Queen of NBC during her reign?

Yep. He was easily the best analyst I can remember.

Agreed. I get that NBC and (allegedly) ND both want an objective broadcast, so they shy away from homers. But the powers that be actively go out of their way to get ND haters like Haden and Flutie. Why hire marginal talents (neither of those guys had established himself as a good commentator prior to the NBC gig) associated with our traditional rivals rather than an unbiased pro who's just good at what does?

Yeah Flutie Flakes has always been a ND hater back to his BC days. I cannot understand why they dont move him elsewhere. Surely some of the ND people have complained about him to NBC by now

Not sure if serious.....it's in italics buuuttt?.....

Flutie is not a hater.....the only thing about Flutie is he a little wooden.....

Pretty sure NBC insists on objectivity for the broadcasts not blatant homerism commentary. If they wanted that, they could hire Brady Quinn to talk for the 4 hours on how Notre Dame is the greatest team that has ever played football. But if you want viewership, this won't work outside the ND faithful.

"I grew up wanting to play QB for ND just like my hero Joe Montana but Gerry Faust took Ken Karcher over me and now I'll hate them for eternity."

I'm a little bit in the Wiz camp on Mayock. While I appreciated that he was well prepared and a thorough professional announcing games (and the best ND has had in quite a while...but c'mon- that bar is very low), his commentary was spoken solely as a scout (repeating lines like "head on a swivel," "shoulders square," etc.), and there was virtually zero entertainment value. It was more like we were watching game tape or sitting in on a film session. Yeah, I get that that's what scouts do, but I like my broadcasts to have some entertainment value while watching, as knowledge only amuses so far during a 4 hour broadcast.
