Part of this is turning a blind eye to what your players do as long as you're winning. Part of it is recruiting these types of players: long on talent and short on character. If you recruit a few players who come from rough backgrounds and are borderline guys, and then surround them with 80 other good kids, lay down firm rules, teach them, and hold them accountable, you'll turn most of them into success stories. OTOH, if most of your players are inclined to go down the wrong path, there aren't enough good kids in your program, and you couldn't care less about how they behave as long as you're winning, you end up being a Baylor.

Everything about this situation and Briles screams shut that program down and see that Briles and the others who let this happen never set foot on a college campus again.

Thujone from Prevail and Ride/ShaggyTexas looks to be quitting the MS Paint business it looks like. His last Season Preview was uploaded Tuesday, this was the Baylor portion:

Some programs have been shady for decades and over the course of multiple HC's because that's just their approach (here's looking at you Louisville, Miami, FSU, Auburn) and who they are. Is Baylor one of those schools, or is all this a recent development that basically started with Briles?

I though Baylor had a history in the SWC. But they didn't make this Athlon list of bad boys.

I cannot decide whether this should be a permanent dealth penalty or not. The situation goes way beyond the SMU scandal.

Maybe the best thing would be to sanction the program by limiting scholarships and putting an NCAA oversight (or other third party with complete neutrality) over the program to ensure it doesn't happen again. Then take every single dollar of profit from the football program and fund woman's programs in the area, including battered women's shelters and rape/abuse awareness programs.

Do that for 10 years - it would be a stiff enough penalty to send a message to every college in America while still allowing local students to play football, as long as they do it cleanly under the close supervision of big brother.

Did Rhule know all of this going in? Why on Earth would a family send their kid into this hornets nest? This stuff sickens me.

So...eventual slap on the wrist from the NCAA?

Pretty much my expectation. The NCAA carries all the same Good ole' boy biases as these programs themselves because the NCAA is formed from people around these programs and empowered by the member institutions. This is why Notre Dame's self reports of academic issues (which were bigger than just football) result in vacating wins etc., etc., etc., and places like Miami and Baylor slide on through with relatively nothing punishments.

Only when the NCAA is torn down, and an independent entity is put in its place, will the rules and enforcement make sense. This will truly take an act of congress...and I worry about the state of the nation and college football if this ever makes congress' RADAR.

If SMU received a death penalty for paying players, shouldn't they be shuttin' er down at Baylor right about now?

Clearly, the Department of Education should take over this institution until the District Court can appoint a special master.

My one question, how does this august Baptist institution like Baylor deal with a situation where a white coed was raped by an African-American football player? Is or isn't she allowed to have an abortion? Or is she forced to bring that child to term, and at birth have him adopted by an institution that will raise him until he can enroll in college to play football?

This is America. No one is forced to do anything.

No, it's always best to match evil with evil. But you already knew this, you're just trying to stir up the crazies who believe that all human life is valuable.

That's just too logical and common sense for the NCAA.

Couldn't agree more... Paying players is worst thing ever but an institution on almost every level covering up this stuff... This isn't once.. Allegedly over 50 rapes were covered up... That's insane
