Good review of Baylor's prospects in 2016 and beyond.
Baylor will play football in 2016. Guess we should talk about that.

Baylor 2016 depth chart
(for an idea about depth and 2017)

But next year...As posted above, they'd need 31 signees for the 2017 class to get to 85. They have two commits. But will have scholarship penalties. Only one of the "Wishlist" prospects in this article is still considering Baylor - Omar Manning - but will probably go elsewhere. Only one of the Baylor Targets in 247 with an offer is a possible signees - Joshua Roberts, DT. Baylor 2017 Football Offers (101)

Fifteen signees for 2017 keeps them at 69 scholarship players, barring any attrition.

The Big 12 has asked Baylor for specifics to see if Baylor has violated conference rules, but Baylor has lawsuits to consider - and the NCAA. If I'm the NCAA, I'd take Baylor's self-imposed penalties and waive transfer rules for existing players.

yup, that's how I would play it out. No way they get 31 signees for the 2017 class so they're F'd regardless.
What Baylor did is deplorable and inexcusable but not death penalty (SMU style) worthy only b/c from a NCAA stand point it didn't involve any kind of cheating, compensation or competitive advantage on the field. I'm sure I'll catch some flack for that view point but that's how I see it.

Yep, you're going to catch some flack. "Cheating, competitive advantage and compensation" are not nearly as severe as sexual abuse and rape. This deserves the death penalty, especially with a history of this type of action and cover ups.

It did involve cheating because these kids should have never been on the field. It gave them a competitive advantage because these kids would be kicked off any other team, not covered up by the university.

Your comment sure seems to read like you think what SMU did was more deserving of a major penalty because it was a worse transgression. I don't think that is what you meant though, so I hope you take time to rephrase your comment.

Which means what exactly?

Southern Methodist University got the Death Penalty.

We get to a point where violations so violate human rights that we must act in a comprehensive and final manner. I would hope part of the reason SMU received the death penalty is because they espoused a higher moral calling than most universities.

I hope the same is true for Baylor.

Let me try again-

Rape, sexual abuse cover-ups and intimidation are crimes and the US legal system will take its course of action against those that who are guilty.
The NCAA is an athletic governing body and they should stay within that scope, If Baylor (as an institution and/or individuals) are found guilty of the crimes above THEN the NCAA has an obligation to impose its sanctions on top of any initial action it took.
I just have a rather uneasy feeling about the NCAA jumping the gun and destroying an institution before the legal system has had a chance to run its course, that’s what I was trying to say.
After the whole Duke Lacrosse fiasco I have been a little leery about the NCAA acting before the law has.

And the other working part is the US Department of Education. Under Title IX, it will reign in some examples as things have gotten way out of hand, and their is a growing public outcry for justice.

Good point, I wonder what kind of actions the US Dep of Ed. can take, fines would be a clear answer but I wonder what other repercussions they can administer.

They can prevent any student at that institution from receiving Federal Student Loans or receiving any federal student aid. Pell Grants, GradPlus Loans, etc. Even though Baylor is a private institution, it still receives federal education funding via the DoE.

It's also less well known that the Department of Education oversees the administration of the Clery Act. This law requires all institutions receiving funding from the DoE to report crimes on campus or near campus. Any type of cover-up or obstruction of this process is a violation of the Clery Act. Title IX is only one part of the equation.

Yikes, well it will be interesting to see if they become engaged and what levers they decide to pull.

Reps for the info.

Excellent post. Of course with my feeble brain I oversimplify things, I was kind of lumping all of that together. Thank you for straightening that out and pointing out that the US DEPT ED can basically shut a given university down like you turn off a faucet. That was where I was trying to end up!

Awesome post, welcome aboard! And keep the posts coming!

The dude is the worst... Joe Pa was a dirty creep who turned a blind eye, but Briles openly let this happen over and over and over and over and over because he wanted to win football games... Both of them can rot in hell

Joe let it happen over and over again as well.

The NFL is the more likely landing spot for him as he's too hot for colleges right now and he knows it. Thus why he's hitting up the pro teams. We can only hope the NFL owners have a soul and won't hire him.

he'll probably get a off field job like offensive analyst and then show up somewhere in CFB next year.

If Bobby Petrino can get work then so can Briles unfortunately

There's a difference between banging your mistress and turning an eye while college girls get assaulted by much stronger college men who you are responsible for. Both are wrong, but one is criminal.

he'll still get a job somewhere. Pol Pot could get a HC gig if he put up points.

Rack Em is correct. Much more serious then banging an assistant, who by the way was the one driving the motorcycle when they crashed.

Given the enlightenment that is occurring in college sports along with the media coverage, i would be surprised to see Briles get a job in college for at least a year. Then it will probably be at a low level school. I think he's done at the P5 level for 2-3 years.

Dallas. He's already chums with Jerry Jones and is out at their practices....

And Garrett is a lame duck that should've been fired years ago, he's done if they don't make playoffs this year, IMO

I hope criminal prosecution gets in the way of his plans.

And if the state is too limp-dicked to do what is right, I hope one (or all) of the victims files a Civil Rights lawsuit. I would love to see the feds camped on his ass, like under the guise of a US ATTY.

Ironic if the football program is torn down by a player abusing his dog; after all the women that have been raped and tortured . . .

I watched five seconds of the tape, and wondered if I could get him to try to do that to my boys. (Two dogs, brothers, father Husky and Mastiff named Loki, mother Am Bulldog, and something else.

Bet he would be the one screaming the second time he tried a stroke of the lash!

Never really got into aggravating situations, but I would be game to give this one a go. Bet the boys would, too!
