It's not really about need, it's about convenience and information. There's a lot of newer features that other football sites have on their boards that you get used to and when you come back to IE it's just lacking. It's like living with a rotary phone when there's push button phones out there....yeah, yours works, but it's inefficient and dying. Some newer bells and whistles help attract people.
Yeah, we can post pictures and videos, but you usually have to use the Embed code to get it to work right...and sometimes it still doesn't work. With newer boards you can just post the basic link to Twitter or Reddit and boom, it automatically converts everything for you. Right now you have to post the Embed code for Youtube videos to show up, but most newer sites you just put the link in and it automatically embeds it for you. Same with newer video/.gif formats like .mp4 and webm, normally these won't even display in IE unless you use that special tag in the URL...and that tag isn't even in the button list above so you have to remember it to use it. Half the time remembering how to do the tag escapes me.
It goes beyond embedding media though. There's functions like the @name where you can ping a poster and they'll get a notification in a post/thread which can be super helpful when you want to bring something to their attention. You can leave rep without a pop up box coming up, which is usually blocked by mobile browsers. You have notifications when someone quotes you or leaves you rep. There's a lot of new, helpful things. I doubt I could list them all because I don't use everything, I'm a bit set in my ways sometimes.
