I am okay with ND not being ranked, lets take care of the next 4 and then we can worry about rankings
Except the rankings today influence the rankings a month from now. #4 USC @ #7 Notre Dame gets College GameDay and every eyeball in the country. #4 USC @ #19 Notre Dame isn't nearly as sexy. Winning that game is worth a lot more if people are watching.

A fair ranking.

Hopefully they climb to ~#15 for the showdown with USC.

No, it's not a fair ranking. #22 SOUNDS fair until you look at the teams ranked ahead of us. We have the "best loss" of all the one loss teams.

It's September. Who cares right now? Keep winning, beat USC, and the rankings take care of themselves.

I don't like Florida ahead of ND, but that will solve itself in the next few weeks.

Otherwise, ND's ranking feels like an appropriate upward trajectory for a team that started in the 30's and had a setback in their biggest game to date.

LOL check out this ballot from USC's own Scott Wolf... Scott Wolf

#3 Georgia
#21 Mississippi State, who got their ass beat 31-3 by Georgia
#24 Colorado, who got their ass beat 37-10 by #10 Washington
#25 FSU, who has zero wins

Unranked - Notre Dame, who has a 1 point loss to the #3 team in his ballot and has blown out every other team they've played.

Not saying ND will win... but if USC continues to struggle and ND continues to rise, there's a possibility that ND can pull out a win. If I were a voter from the SC side, then I totally would be hedging my bets and giving ND all the credit i possibly could. To make my team look better if we win, or lose.

The back end of our schedule is so ridiculous our ranking truly does not matter in the slightest right now. We're looking at USC, NC State, Miami, Navy, and Stanford as five of our last six with Wake Forest as our "breather". If we win five of those games, we'll be ranked top twelve at least.

Edit : Also what the fuck Swarbrick? You're killing us with this scheduling. Shit's ridiculous.

No need to worry. These things typically take care of themselves. Keep winning and it will work out.

11-1 Notre Dame with a 1 point loss to Georgia, is making the playoffs... a 10-2 team ND team isn't.. So in this case rankings don't matter.. Win out

You really think so? I know it is impossible to even begin this discussion with so much football left. What I think we learned most from the 2015 football season, is that it is going to take some luck to get a one loss ND in the playoffs.

I want to be wrong on this, but until the playoff committee proves it. I will not just believe they will put a one loss ND team in over two power five conference champions.

Exactly. If we had one loss in 2012 (and it had been a playoff year), the four teams "IN" would have been Alabama, Kansas State, Oregon, and Florida. And Florida wasn't even a conference champion.

Which is ridiculous. Florida didn't even beat Georgia

Good chance Georgia runs the table and loses to Bama in the SEC championship game, I think they'd get in over a one loss ND team. Long season though, alot of things can and will happen.

The only way ND gets in with a loss is if they beat a conference champion head-to-head and there's another "Weak" conference champion or one with two losses.

For example, if we beat USC and Stanford this year and then USC won the PAC12 we'd probably get the nod over them with our only loss coming to a (presumably) good Georgia. But then we'd likely lose out to Oklahoma (assuming they hold serve the rest of the year), the Big Ten champ, and the SEC champ in any scenario... which would make our only "in" a 2 loss team or a team we beat winning the ACC.

It's extremely hard for ND to make the playoff without going undefeated, and that just is what it is until it inevitably expands to 8 teams. Furthermore, it's not something we should really give a crap about until we have a team capable of truly competing for a championship.

I have said this a number of times and I still firmly believe it.... given the exception that there are multiple power 5 teams with 1 or more losses comprising the top-5.... a 1-loss ND will NOT make the playoffs. EVER.

ND will have to be a clearly ranked # 1 or #2 or a very strong #3 heading into conference title week. It will be near impossible for them be a 1-loss team and ranked that high.

I just love how quickly we can pivot from "Fire Kelly!" to gaming out playoff scenarios.
