This is interesting, because the dudes that are most hateful of TLJ (to the point of being legit assholes about a movie) are generally off the deep end about the way they treated Luke.
I love grumpy hermit Luke and I absolutely love the way he went out. It was set up perfectly by Kylo talking to Rey (you're not doing this, the effort would kill you) and it echoes Obi-Wan in A New Hope (if you strike me down...)
They hate Holdo being revered as a leader that would dare dismiss Poe (I could argue either way about that), and they hate Leia using a Force-pull and Force-bubble to save herself (even though those are canon powers), but they HATE that Luke didn't actually chop anyone down with a lightsaber.
I defend the Holdo Maneuver and I'll fight anyone who disagrees.
Poe is a hothead fighter pilot, he's not a commander. That's the whole point.
I'm fine with Leia using the powers in principle, but I hate the goofy CGI they used to execute it. It looks horrible.
People who think Star Wars is about chopping people down with lightsabers don't understand Star Wars. Empire Yoda >>> Prequel Yoda. Sidious never used a lightsaber (on screen). Etc.
They'll say it's because Rian Johnson totally changed Luke's character... but really it's because Old Man Luke didn't get to pwn any noobs.
Yes, and they're stupid.
"What? I'm gonna walk out with a laser sword and face down the whole First Order? What did you think was going to happen here?"
Luke couldn't have done that. If he had, it would have been OP video game ridiculousness. So he did what he did but created the LEGEND that he did, in fact, walk out with a laser sword and faced down the whole First Order, as revealed in the final scene with the stable kids. He was the spark that lit the fire that blah blah blah.
