Think how tonally weird it would be to have Leia be killed offscreen or via a hologram in the original trilogy. If they had done that to Han Solo or Luke Skywalker in Episode VII people would have rioted. The only reason why it seems like a good idea to you guys now is because Carrie Fisher just died less than 24 hours ago. It would look sloppy and be a really underwhelming end to one of the best scifi women ever.

I understand what you're saying, but I just don't agree with your conclusion. I think it would be more underwhelming and sloppy to jettison Leia from the movie with just a line or explanation of why she's not around.

I think it would show MORE care and effort from the film crew if they gave her an exit on-screen somehow. I wouldn't feel insulted if she's shown dying a heroic death via hologram.

And of course I feel that way because Carrie Fisher just died. I absolutely wouldn't expect/want Leia to die if Fisher were still around. But she's not, and just kind of pushing her character out of the narrative without true closure would seem lame to me.

Or they do nothing more than write in some dialogue where it gets mentioned she was killed.

I think this would be more unsatisfying that almost any other way they could handle Fisher's absence, but that's just my personal opinion.

I 100% respect the viewpoint that killing her off via hologram/cgi would be a disservice. I just personally think an even greater disservice would be writing her out with simple dialogue.

My feeling comes from the idea that this isn't Leia's story anymore. She is only tangentially related to what's going on this time. So, unless her dying was originally the plan (which I doubt it was), I don't like the idea of killing one of the most beloved characters in the biggest sci-fi franchise in history just to answer a question of "where is she?" Fisher may have passed away, but that doesn't necessarily mean the best choice is for Leia to die. I also don't think writing her out would be as hard or awkward as you think. As someone else wrote, Leia has basically lost her home planet, her adopted family and her real family in the span of 30 years. It makes sense for her to leave in the aftermath of destroying the Suncrusher/Han's death. Not to mention (1) it's a big galaxy, (2) the Skywalkers and Force Users are known for the whole "go be on my own" thing, and (3) we've already seen it done with other characters (Did anyone ask where Lando was in Episode VII?).

Actually the more I think about it, the more I really really hope they don't kill her. It would not only be really dark for a series that's supposed to be fun (2/3 original heros are dead, and I don't expect Luke to make it long now that he's in the Kenobi role), but it would feel reactionary and trite no matter how they handled it.

Time stands still for no one.

There's a big difference between "everyone eventually dies" and "this finale with everyone hugging because they defeated the evil empire and teddy bears playing drums with Stormtrooper helmets sure is dumb because everyone here dies in literally the exact same war."

I don't mind if everyone dies as long as it serves a meaningful purpose. Han dying was meaningful. Obi-Wan and Yoda were meaningful.

It would suck if the only way this new trilogy can distinguish itself is to kill the entire original gang.
The sequel trilogy isn't the story of Luke, Han, and Leia anymore IMO. It's the story of Rey, Finn, and Poe. The only reason they were in Episode VII was to bridge the gap.

That's my point I guess. These people shouldn't be in this story anymore, so why are we so determined to get them in? Because the filmmakers are basically put into a situation where they have to kill them just to move the plot along.

I get why Han needed to die to progress the story, and it didn't feel cheap because it was obvious that it was what the filmmakers had in mind when they drafted the story. I also thought most of the stuff in TFA was ok for "passing the torch." I don't understand then why then Leia needs to die a contrived death to explain her absence. Like you said, it's not her story, she's out, let the character go away. Don't make me sit through an uncomfortable, immersion-breaking death scene.

Not sure where to put this but Carrie Fisher's mother Debbie Reynolds just passed away. Feel terrible for their family right now

So this is pretty effective in driving hype

Dumb title. Change my mind.

Either Kylo Ren is the true hero, or all the subversion about Rey being a nobody (which was actually kind of a beautiful idea in the grand scheme of "The Force") was dumb as shit.

Also... IS THERE NO ORIGINALITY ANYMORE??? PALPATINE??? Jk I love it. Palpatine is the GOAT.

But seriously, that's gonna be a cop out, right?

We think that maybe Palpatine survived and has been pulling the strings, based on trailer and marketing, but really Rey is just going to the ruins of the Death Star to visit his Force Ghost, right? Because his Force Ghost is tied to the ruins of the laser shaft from whence he fell, right?

Looks good visually, though.

Interested to see what the ultimate payoff will be that can be penned as "Skywalker rising" for sure.

Kylo Ren is probably the best part of this trilogy, so him turning into a repentant hero is something I'd love to see.

Title is fanservice, but it's at least effective in distancing Episode 9 from 8. Same with Palpatine's cackling.

I'm with you though, it looks great, and with the score, I'm actually looking forward to seeing it. That's a good teaser imo

Bad title. Great teaser. As long as John Williams is around Disney will get my money just because that music is the one of the only things left in life that gives me instant goosebumps.

hmmm,... I don't know if there is anything they can really do to salvage this thing from TLJ short of rebooting the entire story but a few things,... this is the last one, like the LAST one... lolololol okay... and, was that Billy D at 1:25??

Hard agree.

Star Wars score + promising me a visit to the massive ruins of a Death Star to see Palpatine (or his ghost) = I'm in

The only issue I'd have with Kylo going good is that it's so obvious at this point. Palpatine's cackling though got me legitimately hyped in a way that was very unexpected. If you had told me "Palpatine is going to be in this" my reaction would've been "meh." But hearing his laugh made me go "NOOOOO WAAAAAY."

But yeah, the older I get the more I think this entire franchise is totally anchored on how transcendent John William's score and ESB are.

It was almost like a well-executed Joker laugh, and I mean that with good regard.

Kylo is responsible for the murder of like billions at this point... he can not be redeemed... not if there is going to be some true closer. He goes out full bad guy or like Vader (though his only shot at that was the last film no??)... but he has to go out.

To enjoy it will take a complete brain wash of TLJ. Need to go into it with a clear head and forget that mess and just enjoy it for what it is. The last of the saga.

Trailer looks amazing tho and as others said, John Williams once again spot on.

Looking forward to a solid 43 minutes of garbage dialogue between Rose and Finn.
