Think how tonally weird it would be to have Leia be killed offscreen or via a hologram in the original trilogy. If they had done that to Han Solo or Luke Skywalker in Episode VII people would have rioted. The only reason why it seems like a good idea to you guys now is because Carrie Fisher just died less than 24 hours ago. It would look sloppy and be a really underwhelming end to one of the best scifi women ever.
I understand what you're saying, but I just don't agree with your conclusion. I think it would be more underwhelming and sloppy to jettison Leia from the movie with just a line or explanation of why she's not around.
I think it would show MORE care and effort from the film crew if they gave her an exit on-screen somehow. I wouldn't feel insulted if she's shown dying a heroic death via hologram.
And of course I feel that way because Carrie Fisher just died. I absolutely wouldn't expect/want Leia to die if Fisher were still around. But she's not, and just kind of pushing her character out of the narrative without true closure would seem lame to me.
Or they do nothing more than write in some dialogue where it gets mentioned she was killed.
I think this would be more unsatisfying that almost any other way they could handle Fisher's absence, but that's just my personal opinion.
I 100% respect the viewpoint that killing her off via hologram/cgi would be a disservice. I just personally think an even greater disservice would be writing her out with simple dialogue.
