ESPN appears to always be slow on big, developing stories.

My thought was it had something to do with the fact that it was a McMurphy exclusive and they were loath to give him credit/ Urban being a former ESPN employee.

A lot of the OSU fans online seem to be in a legitimately concerned state, like they know this was bad and that's a fact, but a lot of them are also in "wait and see" mode, while others are in "what was he supposed to do if Smith wasn't charged with a crime???" mode.

Could you imagine if this was Harbaugh? You'd be hearing an entirely different and unified tune.

This part is kind of interesting. This guy works for 11 Warriors. The members of that forum are taking him to task for knowing about a wife beater being on Urban's staff and not doing any journalistic investigating to get to the bottom of this story, saying 11W was part of the cover up.

Ramzy is usually one of the good ones, but passing the buck on what he knew as "what can I do with rumors?" and "I don't write breaking news anymore, just opinion stuff," is pretty weak sauce.

What can you do with rumors? Especially when someone might be in legitimate danger? Oh, idk, maybe quit worrying about your access to the team, and get in touch with a real reporter instead?

They all did, and one of their staff writers admitted it last week. Said something like "we knew about this stuff for several years, but we sat on it because it's not our job to police the program," and went on to talk about how they need to maintain access to the program, and drumming up a shitstorm over an issue where charges weren't filed would be a bad look.

I'd imagine that guy won't be entrusted with speaking on behalf of 11W anymore lol

Also, this IS commonplace for writers, reporters, bloggers, mods, and anyone else with close ties to major programs. These people often have the goods and know the dirty little secrets, but they get them under "keep this confidential/this is off the record" terms.

People will sit on things or keep them from seeing the light of day, because you don't want to be in the crosshairs if things get out and then take an unexpected turn.

Your website, message board, or personal brand can't be the one taking the fall in court if a rumor gets out that ruins someone's reputation, and then ends up being untrue or different than was initially reported.

Smith was with Urbie since the BGSU days, he probably knows EVERYTHING.

When you think about it, the whole of Urbie's coaching tree: Mullen, Ash, Strong, Fickel, Alford, Herman etc probably all knew about the domestic abuse too. Be interesting to see if the wolf comes to their doors over this also.

Well to play devil's advocate, let's say the best case scenario is true: Urban knew, and reported it to his bosses as the law requires. That's still an admission that twice, at two separate jobs and years apart, he was told Smith was accused of domestic violence and kept him on, and then he went on to be arrested for stalking.

That's a terrible look and a PR disaster. Strictly from a cold, calculating pov, the wise thing would be to lie and just hope the truth never comes to light.

Urban kept that POS on his staff for years, likely because of nepotism.

Is there a chance that Urban also kept him around because he knew Smith would be the type of douchebag to go scorched-earth on his previous employer if he were to be let go for any reason? Like, "I'll blab to the papers and the media bros about all the illegal, shady, rule-breaking shit that we've done in our time at OSU!"

Smith says in one of his texts that if his wife ratted on him, and he lost his job, he'd take everyone down with him... Columbus could get really interesting if they don't find a way to both salvage Urban's reputation and also pay hush money to the POS that they just fired.

I mean he certainly knows where all the bodies are buried... and everyone knows there are a *lot* of bodies...

This is basically what I told my friend who is a Michigan fan (idiot I know). He's hoping it all falls down on them. Probably more so out of pure selfishness because they need all the help they can get to beat OSU these days.
