I love Book.

What intrigues me about PJ is his running/deep ball ability. If he can even get serviceable in the short/intermediate game, he will give a lot of defenses headaches.

He should be able to run the RPO very well. He needs more minutes in some upcoming games after we've sealed the deal.

Obviously, I love Book and i think he took a big step at Georgia.

I hope to see PJ get more playing time this year to change my mind on him. Hope they could get him in for at least 2 series with the first time

FBS QBR Rank
2018 - 12th
2019 - 36th

Ian Book is good. He’s not been amazing this year in two of the games. Overall though he was one of the top QB’s in the country last season and this year he’s been solid. If he ends the year at 36th in QBR then yea he’s not amazing or has regressed but give the dude a minute before you can him. There’s a lot more than him that goes into the offense and I think Ian hasn’t been the worst thing on the offense. He has zero running game. He’s got an average to above average OLine. He’s got one really good WR and some other decent parts. TE might be the only really good position group on offense. So to blame Ian Book so much for his start to the season isn’t seeing the whole picture. He hasn’t been amazing don’t get me wrong but he hasn’t been awful. Since QBR has been tracking college QB’s in 2004, only 2005 & 2006 with Brady Quinn did ND have a better QBR than Ian Book last season. BK has never had a better QB than Ian Book last season. EVER. I know he’s got a limitation on deep balls but he’s a really good QB folks and I hope he’s around for the long haul!

I think the non-division winner is the back door to playoffs. Losing head to head in SEC Championship - neutral site, last game of the season is harder to justify IMO. LSU losing a close one @ Bama to finish 11-1 would have a pretty strong argument over the UGA/Bama SEC championship game loser.

If Bama beat LSU and then lost to Ga in the SEC CG, you would put LSU in over Bama? I think you would be in the minority there. If LSU beats Ga and then Ga loses to Bama in the SEC CG, LSU would more than likely be considered over Ga since they beat them head to head in the regular season.

Kelly's track record with QBs is benching them for younger players.

Crist ---> Rees
Rees ---> Golson
Golson ---> Zaire
Zaire ---> Kizer (and then pulling Kizer for Zaire)
Wimbush ---> Book

I mean, that's literally how Bama got in the playoffs in 2017.

Auburn beat Bama and then lost to Ga in the SEC CG, and Bama was put in over Auburn. (Despite Auburn having also previously beaten UGA that year in the regular season.)

Auburn also lost to Clemson and LSU in 2017. My example was based on Bama being undefeated going in to the SECCG. Maybe I should have been more specific.

No problem. I have no particular like for Auburn but they've gotten the short end of the stick several times in my lifetime in getting selected for post season championship play, so they always stick in my mind.

I.I Podcast had a pretty funny question written in.

"Why is Julian Okwara the 25th best player on the team"?

It's crazy that he was predicted to push the sack record at the beginning of the year.

I love his intangibles, spunky running, leadership, and his short to intermediate passing game.

But he lacks the arm to threaten the great teams over the top. I think we have the receivers we need for this, but not the QB. And I think Book is scared to stand in and take a shot, hence taking off instead of hitting the open receiver down the seam after the play develops.

Sometimes you need big plays to beat the best teams.

If Book comes back next year, PJ will transfer.

Why?

Still projects as a 2 year starter, and transferring would still give him his same path to play (sitting a year + playing 2 years).

Is this fact or conjecture? Has he proclaimed that at all? I’m curious. He seems from interviews and the way he handled the recruitment, that he’s reasonable, measured and grounded (as much as a kid his age can be).....

Also, I expect his struggles this past spring were a humbling experience.

Agreed 100%. There is still a ton to play for and I don't think it's playoff or bust. Until we get that Elite QB, (maybe it's Phil, maybe it's Buchner in a few years) we have to play perfect football against the elites. We are on the cusp of becoming explosive though, IMO, with depth across the board.

That being said, getting that NY6 (legacy BCS Bowls) monkey off our back would be a HUGE accomplishment.

Not to mention there weren't many on here who were projecting playoff anyways. We still want it as fans, but in the likely chance it doesn't happen at this point, there is a lot to cheer for here. Go Irish.

You know we won't get Iowa, Wisconsin, Florida, right? It will be a pissed off Ohio State or LSU.

Tommy - How does LSU lose to UGA in the regular season without playing them? Is this some standard SEC logic of "on paper" meaning more than the actual game?

All of my scenarios have all teams going undefeated except for playing each-other. LSU only loses a close one AT Bama and Bama loses to undefeated UGA in the neutral site SECCG. By proxy of home field advantage - Bama has two "losses" and LSU is kind of undefeated. If LSU beat Bama in Tuscaloosa they go to Atlanta instead of Bama unless they drop two SEC games elsewhere. All predicated on Bama not losing anywhere else like Auburn to finish the season.

Thinking logically about THIS year's resume and not totally homering it - there is a significant home field advantage in CFB. I know the bias is there to put Bama in, but do they really earn it? On top of that - I think it is bogus to put a conference championship loser in the CFP - they should be elimination games, especially if the winner is CFP bound. Why should Bama get another shot at UGA 30 days after losing on a neutral field - and vice versa for that matter? Totally unfair to the winner.

I would favor us over any of those teams. Florida is not good, they will be molested by LSU, Auburn and UGA - and I would be amazed if they didn't drop at least one more to South Carolina, Vandy, Mizzou or FSU.

Sign me up for OSU - I would love to beat them. LSU could be trouble but I like the idea of knocking out the top SEC team to miss the playoffs. Both of those are good match ups for the top NY6 bowl.

Sorry. For some strange reason I thought Ga and LSU played each other this year.

As far as whether one team earns it and another doesn't, that's open for debate I guess. As far as conference championships and losers being eliminated, my question would then be does ND become eliminated because of one loss since they aren't in a conference? The answer is no. So therefore having a loss that may cause a team to not win their conference shouldn't be an automatic elimination either. It's much too early to have a debate of who belongs, who doesn't, etc. A lot of football left to play.

There is a difference between losing the neutral site conference championship and an earlier in the season loss that likely was on the road. Lose at home and I have little sympathy. If Clemson loses the ACC championship to UVA - I have a hard time putting them in over ND who only lost AT UGA. As a Bama fan - I expect you feel the CFP is your birthright and the season is not much more than an inconvenience to getting there so the idea that a loss might kick you out of the running is probably hard to swallow.

Now everyone pile on with their "eye test" and other "logic" - They all want to prop up SoS with an end of year win over a decent opponent. You get to die by that sword too.

I think teams like Bama have earned some slack regarding considerations, however I completely agree it has been bastardized into them thinking they “deserve” a spot each year. They would have to lose 3 games for their fans and Paul Fraudbaum to think they shouldn’t be included. Even then they’d still argue and use hindsight bias to continue the circular logic of “It was a great win because SEC” even if it’s Tennessee or a laughably overrated Florida team. I do think they also may get left out losing 2 , IF one loss was to a Georgia St or Louisiana Tech or some other out of conference “challenge”. They make the claim that nobody will play them, but they’re gaming the system. To their credit, they built a rep and only need to win a few tough games a year max and can fail to even win their division and get in. The system is a joke.

All that being said, I don’t think ND will get in (fair or not) with one loss this year unless everything falls just right AND they look good the rest of the year

FEI Splits through Week 4:

Game Splits are the team unit contributions to scoring margin in victory or defeat. Final score results (Final) and non-garbage final score results (NG Final) are provided for each team, the distinction determined according to the definitions of garbage and non-garbage possessions provided here. The net non-garbage scoring margin in each game (NM) is accompanied by the net contributions to that margin provided by the team's combined offensive and defensive units (NOD), combined special teams units (NST), and its net offensive starting field position advantage (NFP). The remaining columns, the sum of which equals the non-garbage scoring margin in the game, detail the scoring value contributions of the team's offensive unit (Off), defensive unit (Def), field goal unit (FG), opponent field goal unit (OFG), kickoff unit (K), kickoff return unit (KR), punt unit (P), and punt return unit (PR), plus any other scoring values (Oth) contributed by turnover returns, extra point attempts, and if applicable, an odd number of game possessions.

LoL... I haven’t forgotten our 25 years in purgatory so I take nothing for granted and understand the next 25 years could be just around the corner. Expect nothing and enjoy everything.
