Well after seeing the spring game I know we are all experts on how many wins we will have this season.

Votes are public

I'm probably way more hopeful than I have any right being, but I'm saying 10 (including whatever bowl game we play in).

I think we'll go 9-3. We'll beat Georgia, lose to USC, lose to one of Miami/Navy/Stanford (brutal stretch), and drop one dumb one in there somewhere, perhaps early in the season while Wimbush is settling in.

Not sure if we'll win the bowl or not, so I stuck with a 9-win prediction.

And that puts BK in limbo again (probably getting another year because of Swarbrick's loyalty), with a lot returning in 2018 (minus the left side of the OL).

So we'll go into the offseason, coming off of a 9/10 win season, half of us complaining loudly that BK is still around and saying he should be fired, while the other half sound reasonable in saying "we return 19 starters from a team that won 9 games, we're playoff bound baby!"

It's gonna be magical.

10 wins in the regular season. I reserve the right to jump that to 11 based on who is the #5 team in the country since we know that's who ND will play

We beat Temple comfortably, but in an uneven game and then throttle Georgia by multiple TDs in prime time. We run off three more wins heading into UNC which turns into a shootout where ND prevails but the media narrative says we're "overrated."

The game against USC comes with both teams undefeated and ranked in the top 5. I don't know how to pick this game. The next two games are hard fought, especially the Wake Forest game because of the Elko connection (so they know defensive tendencies). Miami turns out to be not as good as people thought, and for the first time in awhile we blow out Navy. I like to think we beat Stanford this year but coming right after Navy?

Realistically, I have us at 10-2 because I think the USC/Stanford games are coin flips and it's likely we stub our toe somewhere else along the way (UNC, Miami, Georgia, etc.) if we got past both of those teams.

I predict that mp3's will again outsell records this year. That is my record prediction.

As for our wins and losses, I'll say 9 and 3. Drank too much Kool Aid last year. Was even thinking 8 and 4 but figure we out score someone in a track meet we probably might have lost to.

This sounds like ND for the entire 25+ years of my life.

This years team and schedule is eerily to me - reminiscent of the 2012 year. If you look at the schedule, the teams (not in the same order played) are very similar - as well as the team (minus a linebacker and a huge NT).

I'm not saying the Irish are going undefeated, but in contrast to 2012, in my perceptions, oddly similar.

I pick 0 wins. Now the season is a success no matter what happens.

My son says 11-1. His only reason for picking a one-loss season is because the team just isn't quite there yet. In fact, he can come up with a cogent reason why we can defeat anyone on our schedule. He disagrees with ESPN predicting Miami and Stanford as the two losses. He just doesn't see either defense being good enough, and he particularly thinks Stanford lost too much offensive skill to have a hot hand late in the season.

He says this season isn't about Kelly, the players, the statistics, or rampant defeatism. It is about the new coaches, their hunger, the training the new performance staff engenders, and a resultant lack of injuries. In fact, if certain conditions are met, if two things happen, you can throw out stats with this team.

He said that if we make it through August with no dumbshit suspensions or stupid injuries, we are very good for his prediction.

My son is 11 years old, and I can't remember the last time he was wrong about a sports prediction he took the time to formulate on his own.

9-3 if they are lucky....Something tells me the Georgia game is not going to be pretty.

Its sad that an 11 year old has to consider the impact of August suspensions, ohhhh the life of a ND fan...

We tend to do best when pre-season hype and outside expectations are lowest. They seem pretty low right now.
So: 10 wins (lose to USC and either Miami or Stanford after injuries have degraded our already-thin defense). Miss the playoffs but make a major bowl game, where we lose to some more talented team that's pissed they didn't make the playoffs. Then the hype train kicks into high gear for 2018. So, basically, 2015 on repeat.

I don't think we drop a dumb one this year. With a new staff and renewed focus, I think our only losses would be USC and either Miami or Stanford.

Because the Universe pays no attention to my views on anything for the future, I feel comfortable saying "9 wins", knowing that it will not jinx the team and they can still forge their own destiny.

Losses? USC .... I don't see getting around this. Injury to the QB?

Two of: GA (barf), Miami (sort of barf), Stanford (not barf but wish we could terminate their recruiting reputation), and "wtf" (just because.) (UNC is the slimiest problem lurking in the wtf area for me.)

I used to think that too. Then we were talking and he looked at me like I was an idiot and said something like, "Dad if you think an 11-year-old can't tell the difference between suspensions due to higher standards, as opposed to felons, I need to buy you some kind of book, or something!"

Kid's a smart ass, but perceptive. I think these kids can tell the difference, which again may be a sad thing.

No doubt!

Hot off the press, the kid just told me QB Jack Allison is transferring out and is no longer with the program. He was running the 2's. 4-star recruit. And they still haven't found a replacement for Brad Kaaya. Doesn't bode well for the Canes.

I know this is Cliche' and it doesn't go well with this board - anywhere.

But, this year I am going game-by-game. Too many new faces, too many new coaches, many new schemes.....

I truly believe the spring game was a 'go out and practice' game. I watched the GA, FL State, and TN vols spring games and they were more intense than watching the Irish. I don't know if it is 'fools gold' I was watching because, I am from Memphis originally and still watch and follow the Tigers.

I'm telling you guys - Chip Long can call some plays. And Elko.... he has 4 more months to gel up the 'D'.

Y'all know my stance on Hiestand.....

questions i have:

1. When was the last time a power 5 team went from 4-8 to 8+ wins the next season? If it has happened, I would imagine they were returning a starter at QB. We aren't. History is most likely not in our favor.

2. I am still interested in all of those who claimed that Kelly was gone after this year regardless of season outcome. Either A) that was all bullshit from the beginning or B) it's just what some folks wished was true.
If A is true, which no one is willing to say otherwise in months even though they strongly believed it after the season, I dont see anyway this team rallies to win 10+, BK will already be looking to land on his feet by end of season if he knows he is out, and i dont see a coach who has his feet out the door leading us to an above average season.

So if someone could point to some references on these two items, I would appreciate it before making any level of prediction.

I'm always a homer in this kind of deal, in 2012 I betted 100% of my Vbucks every game on winning, skipped betting on the natty, then next betted on last years ND USC game to be within the spread. I lost all of my Vriches but thanks to Vdonations I was able to become Vmiddleclass again.

I don't buy #2 either, but I'll add to #1. I believe it's actually fairly common. But to give an example, PSU went 4-7 in '04 and bounced back the next season going 11-1 and winning the Big 10.

2 more examples from the past 5 years alone:

2012 Auburn:3-9
2013 Auburn:12-2, NCG Appearance

2013 TCU:4-8
2014 TCU: 12-1, NY6 Bowl Win

ND will have it's work cut out, but it's not impossible by any means.

Not sure if the answer is A or B (probably both) but in my opinion, Kelly is not going anywhere, not of his own volition. Not in college anyway, and the NFL ship may have sailed by now (either way it won't be calling at his port unless we have a good season).
I think that USC chatter at the end of last season was just someone dirtying him up. The timing of it made zero sense otherwise. That said, if/when big college jobs come calling he'd be crazy not to talk with them, just for his own leverage if nothing else. But he'd be equally crazy to actually go. He has actually established a pretty good thing at Notre Dame.
Also if - as was floated a lot here in December - the mutual master plan was one more year and then out, they would have hired an assistant who'd be in position to ascend to the top job. Not seeing that on this staff any time soon.
Obvs another bad season and he's gone. The leash is short st this point. But BK's not acting like a man with one foot out the door, and if we win this year he'll be set for awhile.
