Notre Dame landed the No. 1 player in Germany this week and added to an already loaded group of commitments from the class of 2020.
Following his commitment announcement, Dusseldorf, Germany three-star defensive end Alexander Ehrensberger of St. Ursula high school spoke with Irish Illustrated and 247Sports about his decision to play for the Fighting Irish.
“I told coach Elston my decision this week,” said Ehrensberger, regarding the moment he pulled the trigger. “I said that I was ready to commit and that I wanted to post in on Twitter. He was really happy and excited for me. We both are so excited about all of this. This is a great moment for me.”
Ehrensberger has a great relationship with defensive line coach Mike Elston. The two hit it off when he visited South Bend and the bond became even stronger when he found out Elston was coming all the way out to Germany to see him.
“I just really like his character and his personality,” said Ehrensberger of Elston. “I got to know him really well when I visited and then when he was here. I just really like him and what he thinks he can do with me.”
Everyone was buzzing once the news became public. Even though it was a couple of days ago, Ehrensberger says that he’s still getting a ton of messages and well-wishes from people who are excited about what’s to come for him at Notre Dame.
“Everyone was excited,” said Ehrensberger. “This is all so overwhelming. It has spread all the way yet, so I still get a lot of people wishing me good luck and congratulating me. It’s just awesome.”
Ehrensberger, ranked by 247Sports as the No. 55 strong-side defensive end in the class of 2020, is a guy that has the Fighting Irish coaching staff very excited. The 6-7, 238-pounder has a lot to offer and he’ll bring an intense work ethic and great size to the Notre Dame football program.
“I think most people underestimate the football that is played in Germany at the highest league,” said Ehrensberger. “Just because it’s Germany, it doesn’t mean that we aren’t on the same level. This is great football out here.”
Although he is a 2020 prospect, Ehrensberger has actually graduated high school and is finished with his prep football career. So, when will he arrive at Notre Dame for good?
“I’ll be at Notre Dame in Jan. 2020,” said Ehrensberger. “That’s what the plan is as of now. While I wait, I’ll be doing internships in Germany since I’ve graduated high school. I’ll be doing all that and preparing myself for Notre Dame football. I’m focusing on business and that’s what the plan is for the internships.”
